Mawimbi
Our stay at Mawimbi was wonderful in every way. Marcia made us feel welcome before we'd even set foot on the island, and that warmth continued in every interaction with the hotel staff during our stay. The team providing service on the beach and during meals cared enough to learn our names before the first breakfast and provided excellent service throughout our stay. Salvador, Moses and Ivan... we miss you already!
We stayed in the smallest room near the entrance of the hotel (Caballito). The bed was a dream. Perhaps the most comfortable l have experienced at any hotel in my life. (I travel 6-8 times a year.) The decor is what I would describe as elevated boho-beachy, and perfectly suits the environment. The shower was hot and the bath products provided smelled amazing. This is a place that cares about the finer details that make a stay comfortable. I will note that as this room is adjacent to the road it was inevitable that we would hear some ATV traffic late in the evening and early in the morning. I found this bothersome our first morning there, but quite honestly didn't even notice it after that. We spent all our time at the beach anyway and were too tuckered out to be awakened by the bikes once we settled in to full vacay mode. Though other rooms are larger and further from the road, I wouldn't hesitate to stay in the Caballito suite again.
Breakfast was very good. We enjoyed the fresh fruit and yogurt with granola, and the toast and papaya jam. The daily special egg-based breakfast relied too heavily on deli ham for my taste, but other very tasty options were available. Espresso was very good.
We enjoyed all our meals at Mawimbi. The Tostada Del Chef was a particular favourite. The cocktails and mocktails were also excellent quality. Creative and beautifully presented.
We had an extended stay on Holbox and spent half our time at Mawimbi and the other half at another hotel about 10 minutes east (on foot). After leaving Mawimbi we explored various beaches along the shore. The stretch of beach that Mawimbi occupies was our favourite by far. Of course the ocean is alive and ever changing, but the elements that are within the control of the properties were maintained especially well there. The sand is powder soft and the water glorious. We did not miss a swimming pool at all. We swam with stingrays, saw pelicans and great egrets, and the most beautiful sunsets.
We loved Holbox so much that we are already planning our return, and when we do we'll...
Read moreHeaven on earth - the best hotel experience we have ever had! It is a perfectly peaceful environment with incredible service from everybody, we can’t wait to return one day because this place is very special. From the moment we arrived we received the most warm welcome we could imagine over a welcome cocktail - greeted by Marcia who introduced us to the team who made the effort to get to know us by our first names straightaway. Every day we loved the infectious positive energy of Salvador and Moises, they are a lot of fun to be around, although all of the staff are excellent at their jobs and always smiling, they get to know the guests well, we are so grateful to them all! Being served breakfast, lunch and dinner on the white sandy beach is special - the beach front is well spaced out and it never feels overcrowded which was important to us. Lots of other hotels we noticed had packed in their sun loungers, but Mawimbi is fortunate to have such a big stretch of the beach, perfect for appreciating the amazing sunsets. At night the lighting is something quite magical, every table is great but I recommend booking to have dinner on the table directly in front of the fire pit. The food itself was super fresh and delicious - there’s always fresh juice combinations and usually an eggs option every morning. For lunch we loved the shrimp tacos and seared tuna, all fantastic quality. The drinks are also fantastic. We spent New Years Eve at the hotel and loved the attention to detail put into the event. The hotel built a big 2025 sign and it felt like the place to be! The design of the hotel feels at one with nature and this helps you appreciate the stunning beauty of your surroundings. The hotel was rebuilt to a high standard following the fire, Ornella has created a perfect environment with thoughtful and tasteful decorated rooms. The location is ideal, close to the heart of town and on the best part of the beach. Throughout our stay of 11 nights, we were sure we were staying at the best hotel on Holbox island and so pleased with our decision. A special thank you to Marcia and Gabriel - they are the best! We will never forget our magical...
Read moreOur first trip to Mawimbi is in the books, and it truly exceeded our already high expectations! From the moment we arrived until the moment we sadly departed, we felt peaceful and happy.
The environment at Mawimbi is so thoughtful in every way, down to the very smallest detail. The location is perfect. The grounds are stunning. Our room was absolutely beautiful and so functional for a long (for us) stay of 7 nights. The beach is almost beyond description. It's like no beach I've ever experienced. So beautiful and perfect for walking and swimming.
As mentioned, meticulous attention to every detail was apparent in the room and literally everywhere on the entire property. While not necessary for comfort, some of the creative touches were so pretty and unusual which truly elevated the experience of our stay. Everywhere I looked I saw something beautiful. Being surrounded by this, I felt like I was truly in another world. It was really amazing. Various members of the Mawimbi staff said to us on several occasions "this is your home" and that's exactly how we felt. Except that it was definitely better than home!
The staff are all attentive and HAPPY! We felt so cared for. One example, they noted preferences for drinks and food and carried them forward from one shift to the next and one day to the next. They even graciously conceded to put sugar on the rim of my margaritas although I know it is a faux pas :) That was very nice, and we appreciated not having to repeat requests. I honestly don't like asking for anything special because I don't want to be an inconvenience, so it was a relief to only have to ask once, told "yes, of course" and then it's continued with just a quick check to make sure the next time.
Thank you to everyone at Mawimbi for a stay that restored us, mentally and physically in a way that I never expected. We will be back, and I'm counting the...
