We recently stayed in Playa Del Carmen for our honeymoon. We started off our trip with 2 nights in an all inclusive resort at the Viva Wyndham Maya and then we switched over to Hotel LunaSol for 4 nights. This was our 2nd trip to Playa and so we already had an idea of what to expect and where to go. We absolutely loved LunaSol and we can't wait to go back and stay again. We will likely not stay all inclusive again and will just return to LunaSol.
It was just as nice as the all inclusive resort - the room was actually slightly nicer than the one we had at the resort.
It was much more peaceful, only 16 total rooms.
The price was much better as it obviously doesn't include the feeding trough and the never ending drink supply.
The location is a absolutely perfect. You are just 3 blocks off the shopping and entertainment strip - just far enough to not hear any of the noise late at night and sleep peacefully. Less than 10 min walk to Walmart, Cozumel ferry, ADO bus stops, taxi stands, OXXO / 7-11, endless restaurants.
There happened to be a cold front rolling through while we were there and so we slept with the patio door and window open to let the cool night air in and it was still quiet enough to not disturb us over our portable noise white noise machine we bring on trips.
You are close enough to the shopping strip that you can take a quick trip back to your room to drop off something you've purchased on the strip or even just a quick bathroom break.
They have airport shuttle so you definitely don't need a rental car unless you plan on driving somewhere out of Playa but you can also just book tours and ride on a bus or van with others. If you do get a rental they have several spots out front and none were taken up while we were there.
All of the staff working at Hotel LunaSol have a wonderful attitude and outlook. As visitors from the USA we were happy to discover that most of the staff spoke English and so we were able to put away the Google translation.
We felt completely safe in the hotel. There is an over night security person at the desk. I feel much safer in Playa than in many large cities in the USA!
The pool and outdoor kitchen were wonderful.
Everything was clean and well kept.
24/7 water at the front desk - closer than we had to walk at the resort to get water.
The beach was a closer walk than it was from our room at the all inclusive resort!
The value for the price was through the roof!
Last thing I will point out is that there is no elevator, only stairs. The hotel is not "ADA Compliant" as we would call it in the USA. This was not a negative for us however worth pointing out to...
Read moreSadly we now feel familiar with the reviev from Daniel Raffield 8 months ago. We have been staying at the LunaSol for 4 times since 2018 and had usually a good impression. This year we stayed from 27th of Febrary until 15th of March2025 in room number 4. We brougt on a bigger amount of USD to be able to pay our dives to our cave guide at the end of our holidays. For not having all the money in the room save, I was splittig up 800 USD and brought it to the reception to let it be placed in their save relating to our roomnumber. Based on the trust of our former stays at the Hotel I wasnt curious about not reveiving a receipt for the deposit. As I went to the counter 2 weeks later, nobody seemed to know about the deposit and even the research in the cameras did not show an evidence. It just feels like a bad dream with no evidence to me. But in one thing we are 100% sure, the 800 USD are missing and we did not take that big amount of Dollars out from the Hotel during our stay. Cause we did our daily expenses always with MXP. It is really sad, that somebody is loosing his Soul by taking 800USD from guests, risking the good Reputation of the Hotel and maybe enforces the good working employees that are doing an excellent work to loose their jobs! I hope the Management can prohibit such issues for the furure. We will survive the loss, but rather invest a little more money for our next years stays in a saver hospitality around Playa del Carmen.
Reply 23.Mar2025: It is not my intention to blame the hotel, the blame is certainly on me, by handing out the money to put in the safe without demanding a receipt or noting time and persons name behind the counter. I see that the Management is helping and trying the best to clear things up, eventhough the money keeps missing. So let's end it up as is. We still spent more good than bad times in the LunaSol and hope others to enjoy the place aswell. I just would like to advice other travellers not to bring on too large amounts of cash, to reduce the risk of loosing money in too relaxed and save...
Read moreI made my purchase thru Orbitz itinerary: 72758679823866. Absolutely WORST customer service ever. The bald mid aged guy that works front desk in the day shift, was very disrespectful to me and my group of people. I booked a total of 3 rooms for two nights from March 28 until March 30th. First morning their front desk denied our breakfast coupons, and it was part of the package we bought. Next day they admitted they made a mistake and finally provided coupons just for the last day of our stay. Anytime we asked for something the Hotel lunasol front desk staff demeanor was very racist making us feel unworthy. The owners need to make sure they train their staff properly. To my fellow Americans and Mexican nationals, based on my terrible experience STAY AWAY from this hotel until ownership corrects and properly trains their front desk staff how to treat guests with respect and dignity. The building is beautiful, location is great, pool is nice, but their front desk employees bad attitude and bad service overshadows the good things. Some minor issues at the rooms, power outlets don’t work all the time. The main door of room #4 won’t be flushed when closed on the top right part you can see an opening and light gets in during the day. The toilet sometimes won’t completely fill the tank to flush, we had to manually do it. If neighbors of other rooms talk you can hear them...
