My husband and I where booked at the Azucar Hotel for 8 nights at the end of February. Upon our arrival, we were immediately mesmerized by the beauty of the beach and location. Warm breeze, and constant sound of crashing waves...breathtaking. The cabana we chose was directly on the beach, and had a great front porch with hammock. The furnishings in the room are sparse to say the least...just one very uncomfortable bed, and one mini refrigerator. No chair or side table to place our daily use belongings on...we ended up just pilling them in a corner on the ground (which we found a cockroach sleeping under after lifting some clothing). Despite these shortcomings in accommodations, we didn't let that ruin our vacation. What did ruin our vacation was the constant pounding of electronic music from the club next door. The music lasted till 3:00 AM on Friday and Saturday evening, but mind you the music starts pounding around noon everyday. After two sleepless nights, I approached the front desk clerk and asked her if we could expect to get some reprieve from the music on Sunday night, which she stated that YES, the music has to be off by 10:00 PM. I advised her that we hadn't slept since checking in, and that if things didn't improve, we were going to need to check out and get a refund for the unused nights...we certainly didn't want to spend 6 more nights in this nightmare. The front desk clerk told us that if we were dissatisfied to connect with Monica personally, instead of talking to her. She gave me a number, but I advised her that I have no means to contact Monica with...the front desk clerk just shrugged her shoulders and walked away . Well, Sunday night was probably the worst of the nights...in addition to the club next door, the other adjacent property is a rental, which had rented to approx. 12 frat boys that night, complete with fist pumping and horns. We couldn't even make this up. Around midnight, we did ask security to walk over to the rental with us and ask them to turn down their music and stop playing the horns, to which they did. The electronic music persisted EVERY night till 2 or 3 AM. The wifi doesn't work in the room therefore we had no way of trying to insulate or disguise the sounds with some of our own music and streaming tv. Again, when we advised the font desk that the wifi didn't work, she simply smiled and shrugged her shoulders. If we could have relaxed, and fell asleep to the natural sounds of beach waves, we wouldn't have cared about the wifi situation. But when you are driven the point of being delirious from lack of sleep and repetitive pounding sounds, a little wifi could have made a difference. Unfortunately, we will never be back to this hotel. Although I understand that they can't control noise levels, but they do have a responsibility to their guests to report those breaking the noise ordinances and to try and rectify the situation...if everyone takes the attitude of "we can't control other's noise", then Tullum will be nothing more than a high priced version of the Jersey Shore...it's their livelihood, you'd think they would try...

Read moreWe’ve stayed at countless properties in Tulum over the years, and Azucar Hotel is easily one of our top favorites. To start, don’t let the old photos on Google mislead you — this property was completely torn down and fully rebuilt in October 2024, and the transformation is stunning. Everything feels brand new, with a modern Tulum aesthetic that blends natural stone, wood finishes, and lush landscaping to create a peaceful, high-end vibe from the moment you arrive.
The rooms are beautifully done, even the standard ones feel upscale, but we opted for one of their bungalow-style suites — and that’s where this place truly shines. It felt like our own private retreat, complete with a small plunge pool right outside the door, surrounded by greenery and total tranquility.
The property features multiple pools, each offering a unique experience. The ground-level infinity pool with a waterfall overlooks the beach and has such a relaxing atmosphere. There’s also a rooftop pool five floors up with panoramic views that are absolutely breathtaking, especially at sunset.
The staff deserves their own shoutout — incredibly polite, friendly, and accommodating throughout our entire stay. The food also exceeded expectations. The grilled octopus is a must-try, and their burger was easily one of the best we had for lunch anywhere in Tulum. For breakfast, whatever you order, make sure to get a croissant on the side. They’re baked fresh onsite and genuinely one of the best we’ve ever had.
Another huge plus is the location. Azucar sits right in the heart of the beach zone, directly across from Casa Banana and right next door to Kanan — two of the best restaurants in Tulum. You’re within walking distance of incredible dining, nightlife, and the beach, yet the property still feels calm, quiet, and perfectly tucked away.
All around, Azucar Hotel is a hidden gem that deserves more attention. From the thoughtful design to the service, food, and location, it checked every single box for us. We’ll definitely be back — and we’ll be telling everyone we know to...
