We booked a room as walk-ins. The hotel as a building is pleasant enough, with the midsized rooms surrounding a roomy court with a pretty pool. Of course, on closer inspection one cannot miss the usual defects of Moroccon hotels, no matter what price category: the toilet constantly running, the stinking ac, the light switch hanging loose on the wall, etc. That is to be expected, it was like that when I first came to Morocco in the 1980's, it still is. In that respect the country will probably never change. So many things and structures are badly designed, sloppily constructed, unfinished and/or broken. People don't care. What was infuriating in this case however was the incompetence at the front desk, in combination with the attitude of blaming others when something goes wrong. After checking in the bellboy brought us and our luggage to our room, placed the key card into the slot to activate the power, placed our bags on the baggage rack, fussed around a bit until I had given him his tip, then left. So far, so good, everything okay. When we came back from dinner however, the key didn't work. Nothing shocking and normally a problem that is easily solved by activating a new card. But when we went to the front desk the lady there told us that the key didn't work because we were trying to open the wrong room. That was not our room at all. We were mistaken. We actually were in a different one. The 'system' said so. We should go to our room on a different floor and she started to give directions how to get there. She refused to believe we really had been given this room and even had the guts to make us wait until the bellboy she had sent a to our room to check if indeed our things were there had come back. Then she suggested we collect our stuff and move to 'our' room. When we refused to repack our luggage to change rooms there was some calling with a colleague or superior and after twenty minutes or so she finally gave us a key to our room that worked. To be fair, she smiled when giving us the key and apologised for the mistake. But the damage...
Read moreMy stay at this hotel was one of my worst experiences ever. When my brother and I arrived after a stressful day at a local hospital, we were fasting, tired and in need of some rest. We arrived at the same time as a european group that caught all the attention of the hotel team. Nobody spoke with us until i asked if we could see the rooms. The guy at the reception was almost annoyed when he said there was no rooms by the pool whitch i didn't ask for. He showed us a room at the end of the hotel but we didn't complain because all what mattered at that point was to rest. We got back to the reception to fill the forms and pay and the guy had the same annoyed attitude. I asked about iftar because it was during ramadan he said we have a meal for 160dhs that "i wouldn't like" (these were literraly his words) but we can eat in a buffet accross the road. I said ok. When it was sunset we went to the place and realised that we had to make a reservation that he didn't mention. The hotel was basic, noisy, disorganised and the people who work there very rude except for the guy that helped with our luggage. He was very nice and i feel bad for him working in such a bad place. The next morning the noise was just unbearable because of the school in the back of the hotel. When i mentioned it the guy said "what do you want me to do?". The location of the hotel is great but it definitely needs new professionel management and some people...
Read moreWe were pleasantly surprised by the Hotel Volubilis. We hesitated to book the hotel because of some bad reviews about not having hot water and the staff being unfriendly (especially to Asians). But we decided to book anyways because of its location and quite affordable price. We were arriving to Fez at around 5pm, and we were told staying at the Medina wouldn't be worth it. Since we were catching a flight the next morning, we thought it would be more convenient to stay in the new city. So, despite some of the bad reviews, we decided to spend the night at Hotel Volubilis. Its location turned out to be great. It's right at the center and by the main avenue. There are lots of places to eat at walking distance and there are several Carrefours closeby also at walking distance. The staff was nice and they welcomed us well and took our request for a taxi to the airport in the morning. So, we have no complaints about the staff. Our room was big with a terrace. The room was old but clean. The terrace had no table or chairs, but it was okay. The bathroom was also big and we had no issues with the hot water. We showered at arrival and in the morning and water was hot and with pressure. The thing that we missed the most in the room was a fridge. Other than that, all good and acceptable. Though we agree with the other comments saying that this is not a 4-star hotel by...
