The St James — Hotel in South Island

I usually leave a 5 star rating for this property, however this time I was disappointed with a few things. On arrival the tv in the living room said there was no signal. I called reception and the person tried to sort out the issue but had no luck. She said she would contact a technician in the morning and recommended I sign into my Netflix account. If I didn’t have Netflix we would not have been able to watch anything. I heard nothing the next day regarding this issue despite being told I would hear back. The tv in the bedroom had no wifi/signal so I couldn’t sign in to Netflix on that tv. When you’re paying just under $400 per night, I would expect the tvs to work. A couple of other issues were the toilet running with water after it had been flushed and the fridge being noisy. I’ve stayed in this unit before and have never heard this noise. There is also construction happening right next door so by 8 am it was noisy. Obviously this is not the fault of the owners. When I returned the key on checkout, I spoke to the same person regarding the tv issue still occurring and there was no apology for not following up about it. Would not stay here again. When we arrived the lady said we were way to early and check in was at 2pm yet my email said the owners confirmed we can check in at 11. The lady said shel just find us another room she was a nice lady but she was only relieving and she was gone that afternoon. As you first walk in it looks ok I will say the kitchen was pretty clean. As for the spa we gave the spa a clean then filled it up and put the jets on and found the jets spitting out some sort of dirt and hairs , it wasn't dirt from us cse we hadn't jumped In the spa. I filled spa up 3 times and it did the same thing so we missed out on our romantic night. I rung the owner and she said our spas get cleaned so we can't help you all we can do is say sorry but sounded like she didn't care, the hanmer hotel was a better stay, I work in customer service and I go out of my way to help my customers they should do the same . Also there beds are really hard we both woke up feeling saw and broken. The owners also don't like loud noise so if your a party person then this place ain't for you. They don't have much sky channels so make sure you have your own Netflix account . If your a quiet person who don't like spas and enjoy a rock hard bed then this...

Without hesitation I recommend The St. James if you are seeking homely yet modern, refined & well appointed short or long term accommodation in Hanmer Springs.

The room was spacious, the bed was comfortable & the furnishings were solid.

The kitchenette was well equipped & the appliances were sleek. The separate filtered drinking water tap was a nice touch!

There was copious room in the bathroom but it lacked somewhere to hang wet clothes.

With much praise there also comes constructive criticism; the room wasn’t ready when we arrived & the lady at the reception was rude & abrupt. There are clothes washing facilities onsite but you need to pay for washing power. I was told beach towels were available at reception which is handy, but it was too late! I can’t fault my stay here but I can offer ideas for improvement.
