Rustic Cafe & Tapas Bar — Restaurant in Canterbury

1 Star - We visited this establishment during a weekend trip to Hanmer and were disappointed with both the food quality and the customer service. We ordered poached eggs as part of the big breakfast, but all four eggs were overcooked and hard. At $27.50 per meal, we expected better.

When I politely and discreetly requested a refund for the eggs, the cook acknowledged that they were not up to standard. However, the woman who seemed to be the manager approached the situation with hostility. Without asking for further details, she loudly and harshly threw the money into my hand, saying, "HAVE A GOOD DAY," in a tone that felt aggressive and dismissive. She then abruptly announced to a staff member, "I'm going on a break now," leaving us feeling anxious and humiliated.

This is the first time I've ever had to return food or request a refund, and the handling of the situation left us deeply unsatisfied. Unfortunately, this experience has deterred us from returning to this café on our regular...

We ordered breakfast and due to our own prior commitments and change of time we asked the owner, if you haven't started our dishes can we come back in an hour or two and then we will eat. Owner said the meals have already been started, we said okay what you have started we will take away, the remaining we will come back and eat. The owner was not willing to accomodate which we understand and all we were wanting is a work around, whether we takeaway or can come eat later. instead the owner actually started yelling at us and said do not ever come back. We honestly didn’t ask for a refund we had actually paid. We have never seen such an arrogant use of power. The yelling was in front of other customers. The owner had also said that you ‘type of people’ come and waste my time. I will in fact take this as a racist comment. I plead to the public do not support such arrogant and disgusting...

I don't understand why this place has such high reviews. We got tapas of fish, mushrooms, halloumi bruschetta and spring rolls. Fish definitely didn't taste fresh, spring rolls were of supermarket quality, mushrooms were fine but the halloumi bruschetta really spoiled our appetite. It was like eating soft plastic. We tried all three they gave us and each one was horrible. We tried pinpointing what was wrong or off but I think it may have been the grill it was cooked on. There was also hair throughout the platter which the the final straw. When we told the server about these issues she just said she'd tell the chef but still made us pay the full $60 for something we barely touched.
