Overall: pretty disappointed with my 3 night stay. I liked Arequipa but not this hostel.
Pros: the man who works at reception during the night shift is very pleasant and kind. The showers are hot, the shared areas are nicely decorated, and the location is good.
Cons: where do I start? The wifi didn't work in my room on the second floor nor in the shared spaces. If it doesn't even work in the shared spaces, what's the point of having wifi?
As soon as I check into any hostel or hotel, I check the beds. You can see in my photo someone used the top sheet for their dried snot. Why was I given an unclean bed? I was disgusted and wasn't sure if they changed the sheets between guests. My new bed had dried blood stains on the top sheet. Better than boogers, I guess.
The lockers aren't secure. The eye hooks were not screwed in all the way so it's very easy to take off locks without knowing the code or needing a key. See my video.
Not pro or con: There are birds living in the roof above the female dorm. They scratch and make hooting noises. I expected the street noise, but not birds in the roof. You can hear them making noises in my video. Just kind of weird...
Read moreI was quite disappointed with my stay. The location is good but at night as a lot of the dorms are facing the street it was quite noisy and was very difficult to sleep. The lights in the bathroom weren’t working so if you wanted to shower, you had to do so in the dark. Also there was hardly any hot water for the duration of my stay. I was upset as it seemed I was ripped off for my Colca Canyon tour which I booked through the hostel compared to everyone else on my tour who paid a lot less. My tour didn’t include lunch whereas everyone else on the same exact tour had lunch included AND paid less for theirs. I was disappointed as I trusted that the hostel wouldn’t try and rip me off, this is the only time this has happened to me in Peru so thankfully it’s not a trend. The hostel “guard dog” is very unfriendly and aggressive and I don’t really mind dogs but if someone was fearful of them I don’t think it would end well. I had heard average things about Flying Dog hostels and figured I would try them out as I work in the tourism industry, but I wouldn’t recommend or return to...
Read moreStayed here for a couple of days while in Arequipa. Got here early in the morning with a bus from Ica, and the staff let us check in several hours early. ||||We had a private room which was spacious and with an ensuite bathroom. The hostel itself is made up of beautiful Sillar buildings, in style with the rest of the Arequipa historical city centre. Everything you would want to see in the city centre is within walking distance, and the hostel is located such that it is easy to get in and out of the historical centre. ||||They were very helpful with regards to booking taxis, finding a laundry service (which was just down the block), as well as finding a trip to Colca Canyon that suited our preferences. ||||While we were in Colca they let us store our luggage at the hostel, and once we got back the staff helped us book a taxi and find bus tickets for our trip to Cuzco which we had waited to book due to a rumoured strike. The strike happened but ended early, and so with the help of the hostel staff we were able to...
