My cousin had recommended this restaurant to me to visit while in Arequipa. We went without a reservation and they told us it would be a 40 minute wait. We were fine with that and walked around in the meantime. At the 40 minutes the restaurant called and said it would be 20 minutes more. So we said it was fine since we had gone to get a coffee. After the 20 minutes, we went back to the restaurant and they told us our table still was not ready but that we could sit in the waiting room and look at the menu. Shortly after we were seated on the second floor. It was a narrow and steep walk up the stairs. The area was cozy and had about 5 tables which seated 4-5 people. One of the people in our party had wanted to sit downstairs near the staircase and they tried to accommodate but there just weren’t any tables available there. Our waiter Ian was very attentive and provided suggestions on how to order. We ordered our food and got some complimentary bread which came with flavored butter (anchovies in it also but not fishy at all) and a green olive sauce. It was good. I ordered the chicken fillet (it’s chicken breast which I prefer so I was happy!) with a side of pure de papa (mashed potatoes) and a salad. The chicken was served on a hot volcanic stone with 3 different sauces. They were all spectacular! Others in my party ordered alpaca, beef and lamb. They said it was all delicious! At the end the manager came I think and apologized that we could not sit downstairs and offered us a free dessert which was a nice gesture. They were cocoa truffle balls which were out of this world! They were so good. All in all I had a great experience and would recommend to anyone visiting Arequipa.

We enjoyed an absolutely magnificent meal at highly acclaimed Zig Zag on a Saturday night with NO reservations! We had just returned from an excursion to Colca Canyon and approached the maitre d to explain our situation and she said as long as we finish up in 2 hours by 8pm, they could give us the private dining room on the second floor! We realized we got really lucky and enjoyed one of the finest meals we've had here in Peru. Obviously, reservations are highly recommended at this acclaimed restaurant. Our meal started off perfectly as our server Omar was both warm, gracious and funny! He taught us how Peruvians toast their drinks. After drinks, we started with some fresh bread along with their garlic and anchovy butter with salsa verde. We ordered a wide selection from their menu including the crayfish appetizer, quinoa soup, their signature three meat grill (beef, alpaca & lamb) on hot rock and Patagonia salmon. All of the dishes were cooked to absolute perfection. The doneness of the meats were a consistent medium rare and the Patagonia salmon was juicy and the skin was light and crispy! This was about as perfect a dining experience that you can have! The price was also very reasonable considering the outstanding quality of the food and service. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic experience at Zig Zag. We didn’t have a booking but they were able to fit us in (we went early, 6pm). The food was delicious, we tried the trout carpaccio for entree (yum!), and for the main, the meat sharing plate, which included four types of meat, two side dishes (potato/quinoa) and two accompaniments (vegetables/salad). The meat came out on a hot plate, we ordered medium-rare and it came out perfectly, but because the plate was hot you could cook it a bit further if you wished. Great selection of cocktails and wine, including the option for 375ml bottle, perfect for when you don’t want just a glass but not a whole bottle either! Service was great, very fast, efficient and friendly. My dietary requirement (gluten-free) was easily catered for. And the dessert… absolutely delicious. Go hungry because you will want all three courses!

Zig Zag’s was absolutely phenomenal. Hands down likely one of the top restaurants in the region. Service- we were greeted warmly at the reception and our waiter Ian was great and did an awesome job waiting our table. Atmosphere- beautiful, relaxing, clean with a subtle reduction in lighting of the dining area that sets a perfect mood and adds to the ambience. Food- outstanding across the board. The meats were cooked perfectly medium rare and served hot on the “volcano plates”. The sauces had a nice variety and all were quite tasty. The alpaca steak was wonderful, but so was the lamb.. so it’s hard for me to say which one was the best. I honestly reckon there’s not a single bad option on the menu though based on what we observed. Overall - it’s a little pricey, but the quality of food and service is worth it. I enthusiastically recommend this restaurant!

I don’t think I ever left a 2 star review but to be honest I feel really disappointed after tonight’s dinner. Me and my fiancé ordered the “antipasto Alpandino” as a starter and it was a platter of meats and cheeses. I thought we couldn’t go wrong with that. I was wrong. The meats were barely edible except the prosciutto which was good. The cheese was ok. After that we ordered the famous “3 meats special” which it is alpaca, res and lamb meats. The lamb steak was good and cooked perfectly but definitely lacking salt. The other two tasted like nothing. My wife ordered a trucha which is a white fish. Wow, honestly that was really flavorless and dry. We have been in Perù for almost a month now and this is our first bad experience food wise. It’s just upsetting because this was supposed to be a great restaurant.

My husband and I made a reservation for dinner last week before we headed out to Europe. We chose the balcony to have the view of the Plaza San Francisco surrounded with a church and other buildings built in volcanic stone, just like the Zig-Zag restaurant, the dimmed lights made a beautiful scenario! Jonathan was our server and he made us feel like at home. My husband tried the "paiche" a white, soft, tasty fish from the Peruvian Amazon, I enjoyed the trilogy of meats (alpaca, rind, pork) served onto a hot volcanic stone, all served with fresh salads, baked potatoes and yummy salsas. For dessert, wow! I can't continue... I'm getting hungry! -- We highly recommend this cozy place.
