I am not sure what it was, but I got a weird vibe when I stayed here. Don’t get me wrong; the hotel itself is beautiful, and the first impression of the lobby and my room (garden suite) were excellent. It felt like a well deserved reward to myself for having just completed the Inca Trail. The hotel itself is a ‘Leading Hotel of the World’ and it looks the part. It reminds me of the Raffles Hotel in Singapore or the Yale Club in NYC.
The room was large and well appointed. The hotel bar was wood-paneled with a clubby feeling. They serve excellent Pisco Sours. The restaurant was a nice place for a late dinner, and the food was good.
But here is my constructive criticism. Each item is not that big of a deal on it’s own, but viewed as a group, they may portend some deeper problems: I specifically booked a Garden Suite so that I could enjoy a quiet cocktail in my garden in the evenings. Unfortunately, the room backed onto a school, and the noise from some sort of after school activities well into the early evening made it impossible to sit outside (or even open my patio door). To be fair, when I told the front desk about the noise, they did offer to change my room. But I thought ‘no problem’, I’ll just put up with the sound in the evening and enjoy my quiet coffee there in the morning. But to my surprise, loud ‘welcome to school’ music started at around 7am… so that didn’t happen. I felt that I wasted my money booking this type or room and will not do so again. When I checked-in the staff went out of their way to tell me the breakfast hours at the restaurant. The next morning I went in and gave the staff my room number. They acknowledged this and showed me a seat. I served myself from the buffet. When I went to leave, a server chased after me, telling me that I had to pay for breakfast. I told her that that I was staying at the hotel and was pretty sure my room rate included breakfast. I would check with the front desk and return to pay if needed. Rather than trust me, the server followed me to the desk with the check in hand and stood behind me while I spoke to the receptionist (theme here - see below). The front desk informed me that breakfast was not included with my reservation, and that there was absolutely no solution other than me paying the bill. That was odd. This was literally the first hotel in Peru to not include breakfast as part of the room fee, and I had understood that them telling me the breakfast hours when I checked-in implied that breakfast was included. In addition, in the morning, no one at any time handed me a menu or informed me of the cost for the breakfast buffet prior to presenting me with the check after I had finished eating. This is an odd way to treat a guest at a ‘leading hotel’. Maybe ‘sorry for the misunderstanding and here’s a discount’ would have been a nice gesture. Upon checking out and paying for my incidentals (and being asked if I had anything from the mini-bar), I went back to my room to collect a couple of personal items. I was surprised to find the door open and a man in the room. He told me he was checking the mini-bar for usage. What sort of ‘leading hotel’ doesn’t not trust their guests to be honest about mini-bar usage? Besides, I had left some value things in the room and I didn’t need a random guy in there ‘checking’ on things with the door wide open.
My final impression: The hotel is beautiful as are the rooms. But I got weird vibes off the staff. With some exceptions (my waiter at dinner the first night of my stay was very good, for example) I did not feel as welcome here as I have felt at all the other hotels I have experienced in Peru, especially given the premium price. Either they didn’t think I was a ‘premium’ guest, or they haven’t been trained properly in the hospitality business.
I have a favorite hotel in Miraflores with an excellent and welcoming host (who does not check my mini-bar on the way out!), and I will probably stay there the next time I am in Lima. Service matters, especially at this...
Read moreI booked a suite at the hotel as I am a raving fan of LHW. I am because I find LHW’s selection of properties and their attention to detail is usually exceptional. ||||Upon a very late arrival, I was shown the room and it was 75 degrees. But set on 65. Have seen this movie so called to the front desk immediately - an attendent came up with the thermo gun and said the air coming out was cold. I explained it just be a fan issue etc as the room wasn’t that. “I’ll check with my supervisor and front desk - and someone will call you”. Nothing happened. ||||Next morning - went to front desk and reported the problem and explained they should get the room to 70 or take the liberty to move all belongings to another room. Returned from the days activities and went to the front desk “sir I will be glad to report your room is 68 degrees”||||Go upstairs - set on 68 but still 75. Fuming at this point I called and requested the manager come to the room immediately so I could discuss with her and for the front desk to call if that could not happen immediately. 15 minutes later call just as the manager appears. ||||I get the same speech and explain the issue. She immediately got it and said “let’s move you”. Moved from 441 to 444 where the AC worked but this was not a suite. Unexplainable furniture orientation but a chink in my view of LHW for certain. ||||Overall a beautiful hotel and very pleasant staff - but a lack of standards is not a local...
Read moreThe name is a bit misleading, as the hotel is not surrounded by gardens (the golf course is across a busy road). However, the building does feel more intimate than most luxury hotels in the city. The location is not ideal. On the one hand, the golf course provides some open space (though most rooms don’t face it). On the other hand, the hotel is relatively far both from the historic center and from the oceanfront.
I chose a room in the tower, which turned out to be a mistake. To reach it, you have to go through a tiring maze of stairs. And the so-called tower offers no view at all — the windows face the walls of neighboring buildings.
The staff were formally polite. However, since making my reservation nine months earlier, I had been asking about the option of a late check-out at 2:30 pm. After several reminders, I was told that my rate included late check-out. Upon arrival, however, I learned that this could only be confirmed after breakfast on the day of departure. In other words, around 10:00 am I would find out whether I could stay until 2:30 pm or would have to leave by noon. This caused me considerable frustration, which the hotel staff did not seem concerned about.
The hotel restaurant clearly has a reputation as a refined spot, also frequented by non-guests. This reputation is based mainly on the prices of the meals.
All in all, it is a fairly solid hotel, but the overall experience was ultimately...
