A medieval themed Best Western. We should have realized when no one at the front desk offered to help us with our bags that this isn’t really a “four star” hotel. The biggest issue by far is the complete lack of soundproofing both inside and outside. If people walked by the street outside our room, we could hear their conversations clearly. Cars…vroom vroom sounds like they’re in bed with you. One of the neighbors had a dog..bark bark bark. I don’t even know why they have glass on the windows since they clearly serve no purpose.
Similarly, there’s been zero effort made to soundproof the door to the hallway and we could clearly overhear people’s conversations when they walked by our room. A little weatherstripping on the doors would go a long way. At one point I could hear the tv from the neighboring room through my door.
The shower…no water pressure. But don’t worry, when the person in the room next to you showers you can hear the water running nice and loud through the walls.
Offerings at the breakfast buffet are terrible (bountiful but terrible). In a country with so many great cheeses, pastries and charcuterie it’s brutal how awful this is. At least the woman working at breakfast was friendly. The buffet is also served in an interior room with tiny little windows which is baffling since there’s both a terrace restaurant on the second floor and a glassed-in solarium by the pool. Either of those would have been much better spaces for breakfast to be served than a near windowless room.
Pros: Pool area is very nice Good wifi coverage
Cons: Not a quiet or relaxing place Shower pressure is awful The seating chairs in the room are unbelievably uncomfortable (no wonder royalty was so angry all the time) The bed is stiff There are basically zero amenities in the room. Not even a bottle of water. There’s a mini bar with items for sale. There is a nespresso coffee machine in the medieval lounge …2 euros for a coffee. C’mon guys

Read moreWhile the location was decent, right outside castle walls, the hotel itself was way over priced for what it offered. It had interesting mideval decor, taking the whole castle thing very seriously. Kids may like it. Not sure if there were any handicap accessible rooms, but from what I saw, and our room was certainly the case, the rooms were either 8-10 steps up or down from where you get off the elevator.
The room. The worst thing was that our room smelled musty and moldy, which the hotel said was the smell of wood. It wasn't. Opening the window didn't help air out the room. Pretty large room, with very old furniture that, naturally, fitted the theme of the hotel. The headboard was covered with a worn-looking cloth material that looked iffy. The blanket on the bed looked like it could be from the days they built the castle.
The bathroom. After the toilet flushed, the plumbing would moan a strange sound. The lighting in the bathroom was too dim for putting on makeup, even with the lights next to the mirror.
For €180+ a night in an obscure town with just the village inside the castle walls to offer, and during off season, I...
