There was a lot to like about Museum House and also a couple of things which let it down. We stayed for 5 nights.
The good - the location is great, right on the edge of old town, lots of places near by for eats and drinks and conveniently near to the marina. We went over to the "resort" area of town and were much more comfortable in old town.
We arrived late and our check in was easy - forms online, a 4 digit pin for the front door and our key was waiting in our room. The place is above a quiet camera museum so all very peaceful.
The room itself was modern and clean - no great shakes a bit IKEA, but perfectly fine and reasonably sized.
The downside came with the bathroom which had a clear window past the balcony outside and overlooked by a couple of windows in the house opposite - no apparent way to obscure the view in. I'm of an age where no one will take a sneaky peep twice and I'd say thank you if they did, so it didn't trouble me, and we also took showers in the day. However a bathroom visit might have been a fright for the neighbour. A bit weird.
Then the shower had an open side which meant water spilled onto the floor quite readily - not a problem as we used the bath mat provided, but then in the 5 nights our towels and bathmat was only changed once, meaning we had a dripping bathmat to drape on our balcony. All a bit unpleasant.
There was a fridge which was great but we used the glasses and they weren't replaced in 5 days, so it was time to use the hand soap and sink.
All in all the room was great for a night or two, but the star rating descended as the nights moved on. Not major things but a bit annoying.
We saw the owner once downstairs and said hi on day 2 but didn't see anyone around apart from that. The comments suggesting the owner was friendly didn't really hit a chord with us.
Anyway - great for a couple of nights but I wouldn't...
Read moreInstead of huge hotel bunkers far away from the hot spots I prefer accommodations with personality in the centres. Lucky me, I have found this small but fine guest house in the heart of funchal. Uncomplicated and very friendly check-in, Neat and tiny house with four floors and a small museum in the basement. It is just 5 minutes from the SAM bus stop No. 6 (Avenida do Mar). I had the room on the top floor with a marvellous view down over the roofs to the harbour and see, and back up the hill to the upper part of funchal. I will add a more detailed rating with pictures on tripadvisor soon. The house and the rooms are clean, the room was not huge but fully enough for several days. A big bed, wardrobe, telephone, flat screen tv, chair, desk, electric kettle and tea/coffee selection, a bottle of water as a welcome gift. The wifi is fee and very quick! The bathroom was small but modern. The highlight is the window with back view to the upper city. So when you pee while standing you have a romantic view on funchal, especially in the evening :-p||||Just two little critic points: I haven't see a heating in the room, so in the winter season it might get fresh in the night. So pack you pyjamas. Especially as the windows are classic ("pull-ups") and do close fully but with little gaps. That is the reason why you might hear cars that occasionally pass by. Well, that is not a suprise in a city's centre. Conclusion: I can recommend this place to city trippers like me and would go...
Read moreQuite an old house with charm and nice museum pieces too. But the rooms are small and sticky; windows might be opened but if outside temperature and humidity is high, that does not help. A small ventilation system also just helps a bit. Nice shower cabin. Flat TV and small closet and small refrigerator. Mattress quite uncomfortable and bed is aching at every small movement. The staircases are very steep and small too. No elevator. But quite cheap and most central location are bonus points. Overall for a short stay if you just need a place to sleep, that’s totally fine. Otherwise and for more comfort I cannot...
