Firstly Google maps doesn't show the steepness of the road leading to the Mansion so be prepared, it's like a gym session on a stair master but it's only a few minutes. The grounds are very nice, great little garden with good views over Funchal. The house is worth a visit if you like older art. Some of the portraits are very impressive (some not so much) The exhibit we found most interesting was the glass cabinet filled with cameo carvings. Some of these date back thousands of years. Some are unbelievably tiny but have recognisable faces carved in them. Incredible when you think how primitive any form of magnification could have been and the tools available for stone carving. One very strange thing is that in approximately the third room you will enter there is a carpet in the middle, it covers most of the floor. A woman who was working there told us off and told us not to walk on the carpet. There are no signs telling guests to stay off the carpet and it doesn't have a rope around it like it would in an English stately home if they didn't want you to walk on it. BEWARE...
Read moreAmazingly friendly staff, the friendliest we've met on Madeira so far. We were exploring the house which was free for us as we're students. A woman working there told us to simply ask her questions, if we should have any, and told us, she would love to practice talking in foreign languages. She was so nice! We gladly accepted her offer and she told us all about a beautiful porcelain tea set in one of the rooms. It was a lovely encounter. And the house with its garden is so pretty that you can get lost there for a long time, even if it's a comparatively small space. Definitely worth a visit! Admission costs only 3 euros for the general public, it's well worth it. Thanks so much for the wonderful time we had there to the...
Read moreAn interesting museum in Funchal. The main building is surrounded by a small garden area and includes the so called "archaeological garden" which has some remnants of previous buildings and some gravestones. There is a quaint little chapel at the bottom of the garden too. Some of the garden is certainly very well kept however parts at the rear are more overgrown and ramshackle. There's a separate little cafe that's quite modern on site too.
The building itself was interesting but totally unsuitable for those unable to walk as access is up via a set of stairs and exit via a separate set of stairs. I saw no sign of...
