I stayed at this hotel for an overnight layover I had with tap Portugal! The interiors were very nice including the lobby and spa area if you get the chance to use their saunas and steam room, the indoor swimming pool was also gorgeous with the sun roof but note you have to wear a swim cap to use it.
My concerns were mostly regarding the room itself and service. The shower knob in my room had come loose and I had no idea how to turn on the rainfall shower, I called reception and they told me someone would come up and help me turn it on. Nobody came but I ended up twisting it and jabbing it in and eventually it worked somehow. I would’ve expected higher standards/quality for a four star hotel, at least have everything in the room functioning and ready for a guest?
While the front desk service was friendly and nice during check in, my calls to the lobby first to fix the shower then to the room service were not so friendly. Both times I called was met with a somewhat impatient/annoyed attitude from the person I was speaking and the staff that brought up my room service looked like she really did not want to come to work that evening and just handed my tray and left. On the other hand though the room service food was pretty good and had really decent portions for the value (as with a lot of the prices in Portugal!). My last concern was the staff at the breakfast buffet, there was one man that took an extra friendly/attentive approach with me while appreciated it veered on the side of flirtatious and he also suggested I drank some of the complimentary champagne which I thought was inappropriate and he made me feel slightly uncomfortable. The breakfast buffet was well stocked though and the hot buffet included a full English!
Overall I would say I was slightly disappointed by some of the quality for a 4 star hotel but would consider staying again just for the spa/room...
Read moreRestaurant service was awful and disrespectful. Got in on a late flight from Madeira. Check-in and sit down for a quick dinner. Get a soup and we wait for entrees… to come 45 minutes later. Not a joke. They must have completely forgot to put the other in. By this time I’m gazing over seeing what is going on to get someone’s attention. By now the restaurant is starting to close. It’s past 10pm. We got there at approx 9:40pm. Finally after the waitress rushes over to the kitchen and basically forces them to give us our dishes… they come out. Food is mediocre, but chemicals that the guy cleaning the table directly next to us are permeating the air we are breathing and onto the food we are eating. I don’t know if they were using bathroom tile cleaner from a jail cell but jeez that stuff was awful. You can taste it. Normally i would have said something but the crap was already sprayed all over the table and I was too tired to get in a verbal confrontation. I’ve never given a 0 euro tip. It finally happened. No apologies from the staff for the wait either when there was a clear mistake. Getting to sleep now closer to 11pm for an early flight.
If you want to stay in a hotel with slimy bathroom floors where they are clearly using cleaner on their table tops then this is the place. The floor was rotting in our room, probably from the shower setup being essentially broken. You need to pull the little silver thing when the shower is set at high. Only problem is you need the grip strength of a gorilla (like myself) to pull the tab out when it’s wet.
Naturally I got many fewer hours of sleep then I was expecting considering the entire reason I paid the premium to stay at melia to save time to sleep before a flight out in...
Read moreWe did a day rate stay in June at the hotel after the misfortune of missing our flight from Lisbon to Manchester along with 12 other passengers (Lisbon airport was a nightmare the times we visited and that is quite unfortunate in itself as it largely services the country).
Once we realised we were stuck for 12 hours at the airport, my husband and I tossed around the idea of heading into the city to spend the day but I was not dressed appropriately and extremely tired. I found there were two hotels close by. Prices were similar but we liked the look of Meila a bit more.
This was the best decision.
Larussa/Laressa (spell check) was one of the best hotel front desk people I’ve dealt with in a long time.
We explained to her what had happened to us in general chit chat - and she showed so much empathy and sympathy and compassion, we instantly felt better! With just a few kind words! We were obviously feeling a bit devastated of having missed our flight but our encounter with this lovely lady made us feel so much better and lifted our moods.
We checked into our room a bit earlier (the day rate is from 9am-6pm from memory).
The room was a 5 minute walk from the airport, clean, comfortable and spacious.
We were able to have a shower, brush our teeth, nap and order room service - and prepare for our later flight (which we didn’t miss!).
Our room had cookies, tea and coffee facilities, and tv with a lot of channels.
Even if the room and hotel was a total dump, just the help of Larussa/Laressa, I would have rated it full marks — proving just how important the right staff are to a business.
From this experience alone, it has made me aware and open to future...
