We spent 4 nights at the Barceló Fuerteventura Royal Level – Adults Only - to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.
Our room was clean, but maintenance issues detracted from our comfort. The sofa needed a deep cleaning, and the main balcony railing was loose and felt unsafe, which was particularly concerning. The bedroom balcony, on the other hand, had no furniture at all—just an empty space, which seemed like a missed opportunity for enjoying the outdoors. The bathroom was spacious, with a good-sized shower, but the shower door lacked a bottom track. This caused the glass door to swing inwards and felt unstable. It also left a gap at the floor level, resulting in water soaking the bathroom floor every time we used it.
Upon arrival, the bed was made up as two singles instead of the king we had expected. While housekeeping quickly addressed this when we informed reception, the noise from our room location remained a problem. Being on the first floor at the back of the resort, we were exposed to constant road noise and live music from a nightclub across the street, which blared until 1 a.m. nightly. The live entertainment from the pool bar was also audible from our balcony. A poorly fitted door with large gaps only amplified these issues. When we raised our concerns with reception, they said the resort was fully booked and no alternative rooms were available.
We mentioned several times during check-in and our discussions with reception that this was our 25th wedding anniversary—a milestone trip for us. No one even acknowledged it, let alone made any effort to make our stay special. For context, when we celebrated our 15th anniversary at a different hotel, they surprised us with a small gesture of a bottle of Prosecco and chocolate-covered strawberries. We didn’t expect anything extravagant, but even a simple “Happy Anniversary” would have gone a long way.
The resort itself was clean, and the facilities were well-maintained. However, the pool area suffered from the common issue of guests “reserving” loungers with towels as early as 7 a.m., only to leave them empty for hours. A pool lounger assignment system would help resolve this frustrating situation.
The food was a big disappointment. We were shocked by the low quality and poor presentation at both the adults-only buffet and the main resort buffet.
Salad Bar: Mostly prepackaged or tinned items like bagged salad mix, tinned mushrooms, and sweetcorn. Salad dressings were unlabelled, making it unclear what was being offered.
Charcuterie: While visually appealing, nothing was labelled, and not every platter had tongs or forks, leading to guests handling food with their hands.
Hot Food: This was the most disappointing. The selection felt more like a children’s menu, with frozen fried items such as chips, mozzarella sticks, spring rolls, and croquettes. One day at lunch, we saw what appeared to be a pulled pork pizza. However, upon tasting it, we realised it was not pork at all—it was tinned tuna paired with onion!
Additionally, the lack of labelling on hot food items made it difficult to know what was being served, and the labels that were present were unhelpful (e.g., “pork in sauce” or “surprise chicken”). Even worse, there was a persistent lack of serving utensils, which led to significant cross-contamination throughout the buffets.
We also looked into the resort’s à la carte restaurants, where all-inclusive guests received a 20% discount. However, reviews on Google and TripAdvisor suggested these options were equally underwhelming, and we didn’t want to risk further disappointment, especially on our anniversary. In the end, we chose to dine out locally for two of our four dinners, which was a far better experience.
While the resort had potential, the experience was marred by maintenance issues, poor food quality, and a lack of attention to detail. We left feeling let down, and unfortunately, we cannot recommend this resort to others. It is certainly not deserving of its advertised...
Read moreI’m 25 and travelled with my boyfriend for a 7 night stay at the Barceló Fuerteventura Royal Level - Adults Only resort. Whilst there was a lot to like about the holiday, I think the many five star reviews of this hotel are over optimistic and led me to have high expectations which weren’t met. If you want a real, genuine review then please read on. I’m not one to give a negative review but I think people need to be aware that just because the photos look very nice, this isn’t a four or five star stay.
I’ll start with the positives. The room was lovely. It was very big and modern. The cleaners did a good job each day. The suites give a feeling of luxury rather than your typical hotel complex. This leads me on to my next point that the grounds are very nice and aesthetically pleasing. Being an adults only resort, it was very peaceful and relaxing.
The next positive is the cocktails and the snack bar. The choice of cocktails was superb and they were very nice. The snack bar where you could order food to your lounger by the pool was brilliant. Options included Caesar salad, burger and chips, salmon and a club sandwich, just to name a few. This food was actually better than what was offered at the buffets.
Now for the negatives. In my opinion, the biggest let down was the staff. On a few occasions, my boyfriend and I were met with either miserable and/or rude staff. We had never experienced this on our holidays before. Staff were snappy in their manner. They were not attentive to our needs, for instance one morning nobody had asked what I’d like to drink for the duration of my breakfast. We were also told one evening whilst visiting the buffet at the family hotel just up the road (which we are allowed to access) that we needed to make a reservation first. The lady said this with a very bad attitude. We had visited this buffet a couple of times and not once did we, nor were we told earlier that we need to, make a reservation.
Communication amongst staff seemed to be poor and we did see several bartenders seeming to be “told off” by their superior at one point…!
With an all inclusive hotel, our expectations of food are never that high. We are realistic about what the food will be like. But the choice of food was poor. There was much more choice in the family buffet, mentioned above, but even then, it’s ultimately just poor cuts of meat, vegetables, cheap carbs and salad. We visited one of the Italian à la carte restaurants where it took thirty minutes to be served a drink…
Finally, there just seems to be a lack of love from the staff in this hotel. The daytime activities by the pool were boring and repetitive, and there was a lack of atmosphere in the adults hotel in the evening, especially if you are a younger couple like us. We went to the entertainment over at the family hotel which was definitely better and staff WERE attentive here. It does seem the family hotel invites a better experience, but we didn’t want to stay at a family hotel as it was indeed very noisy during the day by the pool which is not the atmosphere we would have wanted either.
It’s also worth mentioning that during our previous holidays, we would enjoy making friends with staff i.e the bartenders or the holiday reps, but that just wasn’t the culture here.
I’d like to mention as well that there’s not very much to do on the island but that is my own fault for not doing better research of Fuerteventura.
Surrounding the hotel, the area is ok. It’s right by the beach, some shops and a few restaurants and bars, but there’s not much to do. We did visit the gym a couple of times which wasn’t bad at all and was pretty well equipped.
Overall, it’s such a shame that we didn’t have the best time, especially when my photos of this holiday are gorgeous! But a lot of work needs to be done for this to be a four or...
