Just returned from a week break at the Altamar. It has so much potential to be just that bit better, but overall it was a good stay and I’d recommend going there for a nice getaway. Areas for improvement - Installing an ac unit in each apartment would be ideal. Not even anything super fancy, just an ac unit in the bedroom would work - The lift, well it has a mind of its own. If you’re on level 0 or 1 then it’s unfortunate because if the lift decides not to stop on your floor despite pressing the button 5 minutes ago, then you’re screwed. We did have to walk up from 0 to 3 on a few occasions as thankfully the pool and restaurant were only on level 3. The lift was also out of use on one occasion but was swiftly fixed. I believe there was another lift but as we were on side a, we never used it (nor knew where it was!) - Lack of cleaning around the pool area. Notices say not to leave towels out before 10am due to cleaning but 1. This rule was never listened to, and 2. I never saw any cleaning. I know this didn’t take place during the week we were there as there was a wonderful corn plaster next to the pool that was there for the duration of our stay - Beds were always made, bins emptied and new towels put in the room, but the floor was never swept. I don’t know about anyone else, but my hair falls out like crazy. I didn’t mind sweeping it myself, but there was no dustpan and brush to pick it all up - As you are on the top of the hill, everything is really far away. We braved the walk downhill once which took longer than google suggested so we ended up using taxis (it also wasn’t good for the chaffing) - If you are in room 49a like we were, you literally are at the furthest point away in the hotel. There were a few other rooms also, but honestly if you have mobility problems, the amount of up and down steps despite the lift do get rather annoying Positives - Staff were all very friendly and always happy to help. Reception were specifically friendly and helpful which was nice - Entertainment was always good, and it made a difference that the entertainment staff were English and Spanish. Mae and Gaz are fab. - Pools are warm and a good depth - Lovely views of the sea from the balconies, very picturesque - Food was always good, we had some really nice meals including the bbq which was lucky to fall on two nights we were there. Desert and breakfast were my fave because they had hash browns and proper sausages!! - Having a salon/beauty parlour on site was good, nipping in for a reasonably priced 30 minute massage for €20 or 60 minutes for €40 was a luxury - The hotel not offering a specific “kids club” meant that there were not many young children there. This could be a positive for some, looking for a relaxing break, or a negative if parents are looking for something to keep the kids entertained throughout the day. Whilst the entertainment did do this, I’d say it was predominantly for those aged 7+ (like pool, darts, etc, not really kiddy things to do) - Not having to queue for drinks was good, it was all help yourself, even the alcohol Overall our experience was good. It would have been better if there was ac in the room, but we did know that when booking. Everything was as expected, nice and a comfortable stay.

Fantastic hotel,location-wise its perfect being perched on a hillside with fabulous views over Puerto Rico and the open sea. Its beautiful, breathtaking even, and that's the reason probably that my wife and I have returned time and again over the past four or five years. We loved it. We're both in our 50's. The first time we went,all-inclusive as always, the hotel was easy to fall in love with. And the food was SUPERB. And this is where my beef lies,as it were. I'm a terminal cancer patient, and all-inclusive for my wife and I is a waste of money as I barely eat and don't drink. I prefer to visit local restaurants and eat out, local food. I can get a full English at home anytime, but all in all my wife and I probably used the restaurant at the Altamar 5 times in total over a fortnight. On each of those occasions, the food was cold to the point of inedible, and very short of choice. A MASSIVE change from the way it used to be,when the food couldn't be faulted. All-inclusive guests are herded like sheep into lines where you stand like an idiot whilst guests dining à la carte are fawned over and treated like royalty. Plates of wonderful looking food are whisked out to these guests, whilst the poor relation all-inclusive guests wait patiently with their cold buffet for a spare table to come free and be prepared. NOT GOOD. Not good at all. What food there WAS on the all-inclusive buffet was always cold and pretty disgusting, with a sameness every day. To add insult to injury,on our final morning,we were packed and ready to leave,we'd left the room and went for a cuppa in the restaurant whilst awaiting our taxi. I had a coffee, and my wife asked for a small glass of cola. Pouring the cola,I had the duty restaurant manager accompanied by a waiter RUN up to us,jabber at me that all-inclusive didn't start till 11am,and demanded €1.80 for a glass of cola. Now,considering that we had barely used ANY of the all inclusive facilities for a fortnight,to be confronted like this by an irate member of staff demanding money left a VERY sour taste. All in all,the hotel is lovely, the staff are mainly nice, but I'd NEVER go all-inclusive again, unless you want to spend your holiday feeling like a second class citizen. Sorry Altamar, but your standards have dropped through the floor since we first started staying with you. The afternoon AND evening entertainment weren't ever worth leaving the apartment for,and the same can be said for the food. Also, what hotel on EARTH turns down a full-payment cash booking at the reception desk and tells you to go home and book it online? Very strange way to run a hotel! Would we come and stay there again? Absolutely. We believe it has the best views on the island, its central for everywhere and its just beautiful. But I'd come ROOM ONLY,because the restaurant and food are now well below par and to be avoided at all costs. Shame,it USED to be so good,it was almost perfection, and I wouldn't have hesitated to give 5 stars. Now its BARELY a 3. Last year we stayed next door at the Riu Vistamar on one of our holidays. Go THERE,Altamar staff, and look at how RIU treat an all-inclusive guest. Maybe you could learn something. In fact,I'm absolutely certain that you NEED to.

The view here is beautiful... Visited June 9th for a week superior room... Balcony is massive the L shape sofa for people to use as a bed wasn't the best my son is 6ft and couldn't get comfy as had to share with our 11 year-old however pushed them together to make a double bed which was better- not a lot of room to walk about inside but it came with everything you need for self catering a freezer coffee maker big deep sink fridge microwave and more! Towels were replenished I did clean but didn't need to as maid came 3 times in the week. Pools: these are a highlight spotless clean and never have to fight for a sunbed inflatables allowed in the pool near the hairdressers and the other pool is so photogenic! We only had one breakfast here (we were self catering) wasn't really for us but lots of choice! The hotel really is high up and we must of spend at least half a day at least in total waiting for the lift but it was better then having to walk. This is the reason we wouldn't return here we are used to being on ground level and although taxis were cheap we like to stroll and we couldn't walk to the beach with 2 children was a bit much in the heat. We also didn't like the 12pm checkout even though our coach was collecting us at 6.30pm we didn't arrive until nearly midnight so expected a later checkout also would be a good idea from jet 2 or the hotel to have the option of a welcome package? (Tea coffee milk water) Arriving at 11.35pm having to drag our suitcases down to floor 1 after a long travel with two kids was a lot then there was nothing open to get food or drink and not even a bottle of water in the fridge. It meant we had to drag our younger one out to the near europa centre to try to find something to eat. It lead to a grumpy child. That being said this hotel deserves to be 4 * not a 3 the reception staff helped everytime we asked for something (1xspar staff was a bit of a misery) It was clean and although not a lot of entertainment for kids in the evening there was music a pool table activities in the day and the much loved football pitch cage- also the lizards are a great spot and the view again is second to none! Pack factor 50+ when they say canary Island sun is different they're not lying I burned on the 1st day something I've never done! The aloe Vera cream in the tub is wonderful and I'm gutted I never bought one home!

My holiday was a 10 night all inclusive break away solo. The problems started on the first night. Arrived to the hotel a little later than expected due to delays at the airport to find there was a power cut in the hotel. The reception was running on a backup generator so only the lights, computers and outlets in reception worked and the one lift. The receptionist explained the problem wasn't the hotel but the areas around and it should be fixed within 30 minutes of me checking in. Accepted this and I was given a map to my hotel room. This itself was a problem as I found out there was one cable style lift in the whole hotel working. The other was out of order as parts needed to be delivered. Therefore I had to wait sometimes up to 10 minutes at a time for the lift which seemed to have a mind of its own which floor it would choose to go to. I made my way as best I could to the room, getting lost on the way, and asking the restaurant staff who wasn't interested and only pestered his hand away and said "i dont know, I only work here". Thankfully I was able to figure it out. I arrived at the room to find the door and windows wide open. I was able to open and close the door without power as it had a battery but there was no lights and no air conditioning working. This was around half 10 at night and all I wanted to do was go to sleep. I turned on my phone torch to check the rooms when I saw two HUGE cockroaches in the kitchen area. I immediately grabbed my bags and ran out the room. But where was i to go?!. After staying outside the room for 45 minutes hoping the power would come on, nothing. I walked back to reception and along the way found at least a dozen more cockroaches on the stairs, the walls and the main walk ways. When I finally reached reception. I reached reception where there were several other guests complaining about the power and asking the staff when it was due to be fixed. Their response was the same as they had given me, 30 minutes. They had no clue. But instead of saying they didnt know the answer, they made up lies. I told reception about the cockroaches in my room and they told me due to the hot climate recently it is common and they cannot do anything about it until the morning when the cleaners start work. I was livid! Not only did I arrive late to a hotel but I had nowhere to go except reception. I sat in reception for a further hour before there was some sign of hope and the power kicked back in. Then went off again. This happened a further 4 times whilst I was sat in reception with my bags. Throughout all this, I did not feel welcomed, happy or clean being in that hotel. The power eventually turned on at 2:30am (4 hours after I had arrived) but I later found out the power went off at 8pm therefore it was actually off for 6 hours. Whilst sitting in reception, at least 10 guests came up to reception wanting answers about the power and each time, they couldn't give any information.||My main fear staying in the hotel was not only the cockroaches but the unsurety of there being another power cut. I needed power to go to a CPAP machine to help me breath at night. Without power or sudden loss of power would mean the machine would turn off and I would be without air helping me breath whilst I slept. I tried explaining this to the staff at reception but they didn't seem interested. All they kept saying was "I understand, im sorry" but not once provided a solution. My only option was the sleep or stay in reception. ||The hotel and room:|The hotel itself is very dated. The rooms are spacious but you can't get over the anxiety of there being cockroaches in your room every night. This affected my sleep every time. I would often sleep with the light on in paranoia I had these creatures in the room. The beds were two singles pushed together, each with a single duvet. Why they didn't provide a double, i don't know. The water pressure was poor in the shower although did it's job. The room was deep cleaned at my request due to the cockroaches which the reception did arrange but this wasn't until 11am the following day. It was the worst first night i had spent on holiday ever!||The food:|The food as you can expect wasn't great. I know there is usually the issue of the same food being prepared but this was daily! The same breakfast, lunch and dinner and my god did the chefs love pork! Every dish had some form of pork BUT check the food before you grab a piece. Often it wouldn't be cooked properly and was left slightly raw. The flavour was also to be desired! It was either a mixture of over salty and garlic food or bland. I wasn't expected Michelin star food prepared but at least something nice, especially in the evening. ||The all inclusivity re the drinks was also to be desired. It wasn't clear as to what was actually included unless you asked the staff. But many didn't want to talk to you or were very rude in their reply. They would lay out small glasses or plastic reusable cups to fill up soft drinks, beer, slushy or watered down wine or sangria. When I asked for a cocktail, each was in a pre mixed solution which was very sweet and had very little alcohol in. It was definitely NOT worth the extra money I spent going all inclusive.||Word of warning visiting the shops around the europa shopping centre. A lot will try and con you into buying something and when you realise they over charged you and you asked for your only back, they refused and argued. Often getting other shop keepers to help them and before you know it, you are outnumbered. Be careful going to these for anything, including food and drinks.||The facilities:|There isn't much to do in the hotel itself apart from eat and sit by the pool. Although if you want a relaxing peaceful time sunbathing, reading or swimming, think again. The entertainment team are around each pool daily encouraging you to do water polo, football or other activities. It was quite amusing watching others get involved but I wanted to read my book in peace. If the team aren't at your pool, you still know about it because the speakers are connected to both so you hear everything! ||Overall I would not recommend Altamar. I actually wouldn't recommend Gran Canaria for a holiday at all. The excursions was fun but it was not worth the all inclusive package I booked, the stress and anxiety the start of the trip caused and the attitude of the...

Stayed here with my wife in November 2017. 1 weeks stay for our honeymoon . Aged 29/32 No kids. Went all inclusive at the hotel.

Arrival: Warmly welcomed by reception staff and congratulated on our honeymoon and given a bottle of champagne and chocolates!!

Rooms: on arrival 100% clean and fresh. Bathroom spotless. Stayed in the un-refurbished rooms, well appointed, its basic but clean, all you need in there for self catering. Lovely cleaner lady was in everyday we where there and refreshed the towels and beds and quick tidy up. Mid week the toaster packed up and was replaced straightaway by maintenance within 30mins.

Restaurant: we went all inclusive as we got a good deal when booking, couldn't fault the food here . Loads on offer, for breakfast lunch and dinner for all the family. They also held a big barbecue night which was nice. Local Beer, wine and soft drinks on tap if your all inclusive 11am/11pm if I remember correctly. Also a well stocked bar form cocktails and shorts. We did eat out aswell just to get out and sample other eateries and see about us and the area. Nice feel about the place and atmosphere. Staff always about and nothing was to much trouble. Can eat inside our outside.

Entertainment/pool area: somthing on every night from singers to shows. We enjoyed the spanish flamingo dancers who put on a great show. During the day we seen holiday reps doing kids clubs and games. 2 large Pools plenty of sunbeds . Also there is toilets aswell

Services: Up in reception there is large seating area. Couple of Internet computers (pay as you go) . wifi up here to. Games room. Toilets Large Spar shop is well stocked and all you need for your shopping from sun creams to water to meats, breads. Also a sun terrace . A Taxi rank is about 30m up the road and there always scooting about. There is a cat that knocks about the place and chills in the seating area or under the tables but is very friendly. There is a chemist about 5mins walk up the road that has every you need. With an English speaking pharmacist to speak to. Every helpful.

Area: nice clean there is a hotel being built next door to Altamar so you might get construction noise during the day depending on what part of hotel your in. We were beside it but it didnt bother us to much.

This hotel is on the side if a hill. And to get to room /restaurant or reception you can get the lift. You can use the stairs but theres alot depending what floor your on or where you are going. We were on floor 1 ( second from bottom) the lift did breakdown when I was in it with 6 other holiday makers. Had to ring my wife already in reception to inform the staff after attempting to use the little service button in the lift to contact (outside company lift services) but the language barrier caused a bit of a problem. 30 mins to get maintenance and get to us and the door open and it got pretty hot in there. The others were not best pleased it took so long to get us out and made it known to reception..

The hotel runs a bus service to/from the beach and main Perto Rico shopping centre for a tip(couple of Euro) the driver is good crack and a laugh! and is every 45mins to and hour you can get the time card from reception. A Taxi to main shopping center in town is about 5 Euro ..

Floor 3 restaurant and pools area: There is a short bridge from the pool to the lift. Signs are out saying wet floor. It is damp!!. Seen one lad slip and fall here on our stay and on our last day 1 hour from getting our bus transfar to the airport after breakfast my wife slipped here and fractured her upper arm bone. SO PLEASE BE CAREFULL!!! Nothing we could do really other than grin and bare it home in a sling to get to A&E..

Would we stay here again ?? Yes we would

If i think of anything else I'll add to the post ill through it...

Our 3rd time at the Altamar, but 1st from it was taken over by Servatur. Wow, we had the most fabulous holiday. Previously we'd been in November, but spent 2 week all inclusive from 5th of June. The rooms are great, balconies are massive, the view breathtaking and apartment has everything you could need whether all inclusive, half board or self catering. The addition of air-conditioning was a bonus and just perfect for June. I believe all rooms are now upgraded to include air conditioning. The food was excellent, something for everyone, and always hot. The snack food has also been extended from just burgers, chips and sausages and available in between main meals. The pool area, nearest restaurant is always immaculate, always plenty of sunbeds without having to dash out at 6am to reserve and the pool temperature is just perfect. Staff are very pleasant and courteous and if you try hard enough you'll get the bar staff to smile too. It's all about interacting and having a chat and recognition of their hard work, we had great craic with them all. The entertainment is similar to most 3star hotels, seen most of it before, but still nice to watch and again interact with. The Europa centre is literally 5mins walk away where there is a variety of restaurants, shops and entertainment every day. We recommend Barbacoa, The Temple bar and the Balarney stone for great entertainment. The Anamation team Mario and Ara are just simply perfect. It was lovely to have varying types of bingo daily, there was no pushing or booming loud announcements about activities, these are clearly advertised on entertainment board. Other activities by Mario and Ara was their magic act of looking after the kids, you wouldn't even know there where kids there as they worked tirelessly in day and night to entertain them. Mario was great at reading the crowd and changing daily activities to suit requests of guests and constantly tried to improve what was made available from the hotel to make games etc more fun and enjoyable. I've read some negative comments about the question of the day activity, personally we felt this was a unique and inventive bit of fun that we looked forward to and enabled people around pool to interact with both Mario and Ara and get to know other residents. We met loads of lovely people, young and older from all nationalities and had so much fun and laughter and of course the weather was fantastic. Sadly the cleaning, which on our previous 2 visits was exceptional, lacked any kind of timetable and you were never sure if towels or room would be cleaned. However easily sorted with a word to reception, still needs a bit of work and hopefully will improve, but overall we really couldn't fault this hotel. People mention the lifts breaking down, we have never witnessed this in any of our stay. I always email hotel and ask them to put us close to restaurant pool, on same floor as a lift, but we managed to use the stairs most of the time being on floor 6, any higher I don't think we'd have managed just as well. The supermarket on site is well stocked and priced. Bottle of water in fridge on arrival and you can refill in restaurant. Overall fabulous hotel, fabulous entertainment team Mario and Ara, fabulous holiday. Definitely going...
