Love this place. Book it early. It fills up fast; the best places do.
I stayed a few years ago & returned. Same family owners & same exceptionally well-located hostal in what used to be their ancestor’s home. It’s history! It has been beautifully converted into guest accommodations with private baths. The premises are impeccably kept. Room furnish are excellent as are towels & linens. It is located on a well-travelled street which makes it easy to find but at night it is very quiet.
The room has everything you need & some do have a view of the cathedral or of lovely Santiago rooftops.
No elevator or a/c. If you require either, I would not recommend it although if the issue is the elevator, you could ask for a room on the European 1st floor; one flight up. In terms of a/c, other than hot summer days, the evenings throughout Galicia are cool. open your window & it’s comfortable.
There is plenty of street parking adjacent to the property. Safe Street parking is free. I left my rental car outside without incident.
There is a beautiful park across the street with a scenic overlook. It is a great place to find a bench & watch locals promenade throughout the day.
The cathedral is but a short walk away as are all tourist sites. Plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, bakeries nearby. Step out of the hostal, turn left, walk less than 5 minutes & you’re in the old town. Better location, impossible.
The family that owns the hostal is amazingly kind; very hard working. It consists of a couple & their adult son who speaks English well. You will enjoy meeting them.
Breakfast is served in an open air (weather-permitting) interior patio that connects the hostal building with the owner’s apartment. You will enjoy it and be glad you decided on the...
Read moreWhat an incredible gem of a place to stay! I am so glad a friend recommended Hostal Alfonso, and now I heartily recommend it. I stayed in room 301 on the top floor on the rear side of the building. The location beside Alameda Park is a quiet street yet just a short walk to restaurants and the Cathedral and Old Town streets. |The interior is beautifully decorated and impeccably clean. My room was cleaned and made up every day. The room and en suite bathroom are small as is typical for inexpensive Santiago hostals. There were two windows which I could open and I had a fantastic view of the Cathedral spires. The bathroom has a skylight for even more natural light. Other room amenities include a TV, hair dryer, and a fan (I think no AC).|The extremely reasonable rate includes an excellent breakfast starting at 8:30. Coffee, orange juice, bread and toast, ham or fruit- all delicious.|And perhaps the most important quality of the Hostal is the welcoming, friendly and very helpful proprietor. He is far better than most. |I would definitely...
