Lydmar Hotel – elegant, artistic, and… strangely athletic
I stayed at Lydmar more than a year ago, but there’s one part of the experience I’ve never forgotten — and probably never will.
Let’s start with the good: Lydmar is a beautifully designed boutique hotel in the very heart of Stockholm. It sits almost in the shadow of the majestic Grand Hôtel, and the interiors reflect an eye for detail — stylish furniture, tasteful artwork, and a kind of relaxed sophistication that feels personal rather than pretentious.
My room was spacious and elegant, with lovely touches throughout — including a separate guest toilet, which I genuinely appreciated. The breakfast was excellent, both in quality and setting.
But now we must talk about the gym situation.
Lydmar does not have its own gym, which is fine — they offer access to the Grand Hôtel’s gym instead. A nice gesture, in theory. In practice? A small adventure.
Here’s the catch: Lydmar guests are allowed to use the Grand’s gym, but not the gym’s changing room. This means that one must walk from Lydmar to the Grand dressed in full workout gear, pass through the gloriously pompous lobby of the Grand Hôtel (hello chandeliers and opera vibes), navigate gilded corridors, and arrive at the gym already feeling slightly… misplaced. After the workout, sweaty and unscented, you retrace your steps through the same golden maze — now repelling the delicate noses of Grand Hôtel’s more perfumed clientele.
When I mentioned this to Lydmar’s reception, the response was indifferent — a vague shrug, as if I were describing a minor inconvenience in a parallel universe.
The next day, I returned to the Grand Hôtel (still in sportswear, still determined) and explained the situation to their daglig leder. To their credit, the Grand took the issue more seriously and allowed me to use the changing facilities on future visits. They were professional, courteous — and clearly understood why the idea of wandering post-workout through Versailles was less than ideal.
In short: I loved the hotel. But I do hope Lydmar’s staff someday understands that even boutique hotels need to take small things seriously — especially when their guests are dripping sweat across someone...

Read moreI stayed here with my wife in December 2024. We stayed in a king room on the floor above reception.
The staff where excellent from the start. Polite, friendly and attentive from a distance. Overall a very good balance of skills. The reception helped handle a request for hypoallergenic bedding swiftly. My wife was doing a sports event in Stockholm and the staff in reception remembered and asked about it on the morning of and morning after, which was a friendly touch.
Breakfast was good, with staff attentive from a suitable distance. Selection was the same each morning but was a good mix of nuts, seeds, cereals, cooked and a small a la carte offering.
The room was quiet and comfortable. We had a side view of the water. If we came back we'd uograde to a suite as the space in the room is the only thing we didn't fully like. There isn't anywhere to unpack your clothing really, except a small cupboard. And seating is limited to one small desk chair and one small sofa chair.
We used the gym (across the road from the hotel). The reception in the Lydmar hotel give you a code to get in, you go over the street already changed and sign in at the gym reception in a Lydmar sign in sheet. The gym was actually very well equipped. I've read bad reviews elsewhere about the gym but I wonder if the setup is now different as it really was one of the better hotel gyms we've used. Some of the running machines have a view over the water which is really nice.
The hotel itself is within 20-30 minute walk of most key...
