When visiting Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, a must-eat dish is of course Swedish meatballs; something you can find in the majority of restaurants and brasseries in the city’s old town (swe: Gamla Stan, lit. old town). The prices vary, but don’t expect to pay less than 20 euros in the touristy area. The dish consists usually of five distinct elements. pork and/or beefmeatballs with mashed potato, a brown cream sauce, lingonberry jam, and pickled cucumbers. On this occasion I decided to dine at a restaurant called Tradition just at the outskirts of Gamla Stan. Weirdly enough, the restaurant does not serve fusion food or ”exotic” cuisine. The fatal decision was made with the aid of a beloved social media site called Reddit, or via ”a Google-assisted Reddit search” with the search term formula ”what you want to search for” + reddit. Best swedish meatballs gamla stan reddit, and voilà, Tradition is shown in one of the top comments of a recent thread in r/stockholm. While this method of finding restaurants is not foolproof, it gives a reasonably accurate result of what people (and often locals) consider good food in their area. The dish offers everything you need for a satisfying food experience. The meaty, savoury, and fatty meatballs are small two-bite (or one-bite if you’re a glutton like me) sensations that equip a space somewhere in the category of comfort food. They are accompanied by a creamy, velvety, buttery and rich potato mash that is - yes, of course - definite comfort food in the world of sides. Einstein’s family members might guess this dish can be described as ”comfort food”. So, you take a meatball (or cut a piece if you have patience and respect mindful eating behaviour) and slather some mash on it with your knife. The ball will be covered with a sauce (there’s no innuendo here, behave) that is rich, creamy, buttery (butter makes everything better so if it can be included it will be), peppery, and umami-savoury. Now your utensil is full of fatty, buttery, salty and savoury richness. Balance is needed and fast. Acidity and sweetness are missing from the provisional mouthgasm; therefore add a small heap of lingonberry jam on top for a tart and slightly sweet touch. Enter to your mouth, and immediately add a small, paperthin slice of pickled cucumber. Repeat until you have cleaned the plate. Celebrate being alive and blessed enough to experience yet another food sensation.

Let's be honest, Swedish cuisine sometimes gets a bad rap. People think meatballs and… well, more meatballs. But Tradition is here to set the record straight, like a culinary superhero in a chef's hat. Nestled in the charming Old Town (Gamla Stan), this isn't your grandma's dusty cookbook – unless your grandma was a Michelin-star chef with a penchant for modern twists. First off, the staff. These folks aren't just serving food; they're hosting a party, and you're the guest of honor. They’re attentive, friendly, and seem genuinely thrilled you're there. It's like dining with your favorite (and slightly more organized) family. You can feel the love emanating from the kitchen and the bar, like a warm hug on a chilly Stockholm evening. Now, the food. Oh, the food! Tradition takes classic Swedish dishes and gives them a contemporary makeover, think of it as a stylish upgrade rather than a complete overhaul. They manage to retain the comforting soul of the original dishes while adding a touch of finesse. It's Swedish "husmanskost" (home-style cooking) elevated to an art form. You'll find familiar favorites prepared with obvious care and high-quality ingredients. No sad, grey meatballs here, my friends. The drinks menu is equally impressive, clearly curated with as much love and attention as the food. The pairings are on point, enhancing the dining experience without overshadowing the stars of the show (the food, obviously). Is it worth the money? In a city where a simple sandwich can set you back a small fortune, Tradition offers excellent value. You're not just paying for a meal; you're paying for an experience: delicious food, impeccable service, and a cozy atmosphere that makes you want to linger long after you've cleared your plate. Verdict: If you're looking to experience the best of modern Swedish cuisine in a warm and welcoming setting, Tradition is a must-visit. Just be prepared to leave with a full stomach and a big smile. You might even start craving Swedish food. Who knew?

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Tradition in Stockholm's charming Gamla Stan district, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the stage for an exceptional evening. The quality of the ingredients used in their dishes is outstanding. Each bite reflects the freshness and authenticity of traditional Swedish cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the ox cheek stew, which was incredibly tender and rich in flavor, served with a deliciously smooth potato purée. Another standout was the potato dumplings filled with mushrooms, a perfectly balanced dish that highlighted the depth of Nordic flavors. The staff at Tradition are not only friendly and attentive but also fluent in English, making the dining experience seamless for international guests. They took the time to explain each dish in detail, enhancing my appreciation for the meal. Their professionalism and warmth truly stood out. As it was my birthday, I was touched by the thoughtful gesture of the staff who surprised me with a candle on my dessert. This personal touch made the evening even more special and memorable. The restaurant's location near the Royal Palace adds to its appeal, offering a cozy ambiance away from the usual tourist spots. The interior is modern yet retains a traditional Swedish charm, creating a comfortable setting for any occasion. In summary, Tradition offers an authentic Swedish dining experience with high-quality ingredients, exceptional service, and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you're a local or a visitor, I highly recommend this restaurant for a true taste of Sweden.

Attended at lunch time for the lunch menu. Salad & Bread Wholegrain crisp and a brown sugar bread with whipped butter. butter crafted to perfection with a creamy lightly salted taste to a excellent smooth silky texture. Salad fresh and appetizing with a well balanced dressing, simple but amazing. Toast Skagen Quenelle of coldwater prawn salad topped with fish roe, served with two slices of buttered toast. Good balance on flavours, the saltiness of fish roe, creaminess of mayo, freshness of shrimps and the toast compliment each other very well, with lemon juice to top to provide a slight tang for refreshing quality. Pork tenderloin Slightly spicy and fiery with a taste of sweetness with the charred romaine. Good presentation and nicely roasted potatoes. Tenderloin speaks for itself, pulls without a knife and is quite tender, despite slightly drying out. Nonetheless strong performance. Baked Haddock Creamy white chive sauce with smooth buttery taste. More like poached as the fish is without skin, but still flavourful and well balanced. Pickled vegetables helps balance out and clean the palette for another bite. Fork tender boiled potatoes laid underneath the fish fillet. Excellent freshness on this dish. Service Very well mannered staff, managed well to showing up early for bookings. Attentive to needs and kindly checking into guests. Overall Strong performance in terms of food as well as service. Very well priced lunch menu and gives good value for money. 9/10 recommend.

Service. Ok so I was initially going to leave a negative review of this restaurant just based on my experience with the customer service. But time heals all wounds 💔 I made a reservation for dinner here on a very very rainy day in October. I cannot emphasize enough how rainy it was. This restaurant has two entrances (or at least what looks like two) and I apparently entered through the wrong one. Keep in mind I have no umbrella and am getting absolutely soaked and honestly don't care which door I came though. I'm wet and want to eat. The staff inform me that I've come through the wrong entrance and need to walk around to the other side of the building before I can be served 😮💨 At the time I was only person in the restaurant so it didn't seem like letting me come in from the "wrong" side would have interrupted anything. Anyway, I walked in the rain without an umbrella to the other side of the building. They were then shocked and tbh a little annoyed that I was so wet. Who would have guessed... Once I was seated, they were super nice, and I received the service that I would have expected from an establishment such as this. But the whole experience left a bad tate in my mouth. Food. The food was excellent. I wasn't too sure what to expect from Swedish food, and luckily, I wasn't disappointed. Portions were large, and I didn't feel like I was getting ripped off. Would recommend the Swedish dumplings 👌

We booked a table at this restaurant the day before specifically to try the Röding (Arctic Char). Once seated and after receiving our drinks, we placed our order only to be told that the Röding was sold out (at 8:00 PM). This was quite disappointing, especially since the menu only offers six main courses, with just one featuring Röding, and by that point, we couldn’t simply leave and go elsewhere. We had no choice but to opt for meat dishes instead. I fully appreciate the concept of a small, curated menu—it often reflects attention to ingredient selection and dish preparation. However, when offering a limited menu, it’s crucial to ensure that all listed dishes are actually available. A smaller selection should, in theory, make inventory management easier. Moreover, since reservations are made in advance and confirmed with a credit card, the restaurant knows exactly how many guests to expect each day. That being said, the food was good, but we didn’t get to eat what we had originally planned for. My feedback is meant to be constructive—unfortunately, not everyone has the opportunity to "come back another day," especially tourists visiting from another country. The unavailability of a main dish should be communicated as soon as the menu is presented, not after drinks have already been served.
