Went to Yilan for their hot springs and did a tour of the KaVaLan whisky distillery in May 2015. Stayed at Triori for two nights and loved it.||||Transportation to Yilan:||Getting to Yilan is not all that difficult, just head to the central bus station from Taipei and you will get there within an hour. After you get off at the Yilan bus terminus, catching a taxi to Triori is around 5 minutes.||||The rooms at Triori vary in sizes and most of them are two-stories buildings. The room I stayed in was the largest at the hostel and could easily fit four people (although two will probably sleep on the futon since theres only one bed). Decor is relatively new and Japanese styled, and although all the windows come with insect screens you would be better off bringing mosquito repellent as they are known to carry diseases (and its a rural area after all).||||Dining:||There is a complementary Taiwanese-styled homemade breakfast which is absolutely lovely, and aside from the fish and eggs pretty much every thing else is refillable. On certain days, they also offer a fish/sake pairing as a dinner snack I say snack because its not enough to fill you up for dinner. There are also plenty of restaurants within 10 minutes by taxi, so food shouldn't be a problem.||||Things to do:||Did not actually do much while I was there, just relaxed at the hot springs whenever I could. I recommend going out to the KaVaLan whisky distillery for those of you who love your whisky - trip is about 50 minutes and costs around 400 NTD. For around 1300 NTD, you can also make your own blend in a DIY course they offer at several times each day.||||Hope this helps if you are planning to...
Read moreHaving stayed at many onsen ryokans in Japan throughout the years, I know what a good onsen experience means. So when I found this online, learning that it’s Japanese style and includes 2 meals (dinner and breakfast) like the ones in Japan for only half the price I’d usually pay. I have to admit I was skeptical. ||The b&b is located in Jiaosi, only 1 hour from Taipei by bus. It’s not my first time to Yilan but it’s my first time taking those kind of coach buses in Taiwan. It’s surprisingly pleasant! There’s not much to explore in Jiaosi though so we stayed in the b&b the whole time. ||The b&b overlooks a big pool or water (pond?!) with a lot of ducks, and we get a nice view from both floors of our room. ||From the moment we stepped in, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, and they made us feel right at home. We enjoyed the hot spring tub very much, even though it’s inside it’s well ventilated and overlooks a private garden (I usually prefer outdoor). we had 4 rounds in total! One thing to consider is that the bathroom is upstairs, maybe not the most convenient if you have old folks or young kids. But for us it’s not an issue at all and we love the layout. ||Both dinner and breakfast were wonderful and emphasized using a lot of local ingredients and specialties. All the dishes taste and look exquisite. The sashimi was obviously fresh as it came from the harbor on the day - I usually don’t like squid all that much but this one was so sweet!||We would love to come...
