Perhaps you have to be here in the peak of high season for all the excellent reviews to make sense. it’s a sweet place with a hippy vibe in a good location right by the beach, but beyond that, it leaves much to be desired. staff hang out all day in the main courtyard (Kim’s Restaurant) looking disinterested, rooms are pretty bleak and unbearably hot (there’s also nowhere to hang anything), and the bright, characterful murals and communal decor is in stark contrast to the complete lack of enthusiasm shown by everyone (other than Kim — who was very nice, but seems to spend very little time there other than the occasional brief drop in). All signs for the restaurant also announce that there is free wifi (which most basic guesthouses on Zanzibar offer, even if it’s only in the communal areas). I asked about the wifi several times — at first staff just fobbed me off with ‘not now’. When we had dinner at Kim’s, they finally (grudgingly) switched it on for an hour, then immediately turned it off when we went back to our room.
