I booked this hotel on their website and I communicated with the manager prior to arrival to ask about full board. He provided the menus and price and when I asked if I could pay right away, he said to pay at checkin. We arrived late afternoon exhausted from an overnight flight with connection that was delayed. The check in process was horrible. It took nearly an hour because they couldn’t get the keycard to work, then had to walk to their office offsite to make a new one, only to walk me to the wrong room that belonged to someone else. This meant waiting for ANOTHER key card to be made. There is no elevator so the poor security man carried my suitcase up and down the stairs multiple times. Once they gave us the keycards they couldn’t figure out how to charge us for the full board. In addition, they quoted a higher price. The manager was called and his first question was to ask for the email proof I had of the price. He seemed surprised that the email was from him. I asked him why he didn’t allow me to pay in advance and why he didn’t mention potential price changes. He had no answer so ended up honoring the original quoted price. The room was small for the price we paid. There’s only floor space for one suitcase so if you’re sharing a room you wouldn’t be able to open both suitcases at once. The layout was also very strange and made the room feel even smaller. The bedding was old and pilling so it was scratchy. I paid for the upgraded room with a sea view. The “view” was mostly obscured and you could only see a little bit of the sea if you step out onto the balcony. The worst part was the bed was facing the opposite way so when you lie in bed you’re facing the gym through the balcony glass doors. That’s all I saw the whole time- people working out at the gym. Housekeeping was also very inconsistent. Sometimes they brought water, sometimes they didn’t. Same for the towels and toilet paper. We mostly had to go to reception and ask for everything. Also one room had a phone and the other didn’t and the remote control for the AC was out of batteries. It cannot be that hard to train the staff and give them a list of what the rooms should be stocked with?? The spa was mediocre - the pedicure wasn’t good at all. The massage was pretty weak and were all the same regardless of the type of massage you requested. The food at Sexy Fish was quite good. I was surprised by how tender the octopus was and how tasty the Indian dishes were. I also loved the lava chocolate cake. The rooftop restaurant was very bad and the food tasted reheated. Prices for cocktails are comparable to US. As we had to leave early in the morning and remembering our check in experience, we opted to check out the night before. It was a good thing we did because again it took almost an hour. The man at reception couldn’t figure out how to print the bill and then how to edit it when we pointed out an error. First we were overcharged as they billed us for dinner though we had full board. Then when he fixed it, he didn’t charge us for the first night’s dinner before full board started. We were undercharged. Even when the manager came out to “help”, this poor man still couldn’t do the math correctly. I could tell by his face that he just made the corrections we told him to without actually understanding. He’s lucky we’re honest people and insisted on paying the full amount, not the lesser amount he fixed the bill to. How does a hotel at this price point have staff who don’t know how to check in or check out customers and can’t do simple math? This hotel was quite expensive and definitely not worth the price. The rooms are very small and the layout is awkward and doesn’t maximize the space. In addition, charging more for a room with a “sea view” that actually faces the gym is dishonest. The incompetent staff at the front desk and inconsistent service from housekeeping do not align with the price of the hotel. I wouldn’t recommend staying here but instead, just come eat dinner at the restaurant.

To be honest, I had a lot of debates when booking Z Hotel as two people in our early 30s. I wasn’t sure whether Nungwi was where we wanted to stay, given all the talks about the beach boys. It’s also quite far away, but my four nights at Z Hotel reassured me. The area was filled with things to do — our dive center was actually just 2 min away from the hotel (so convenient) and so many restaurants around. Other resorts in Nungwi can be a bit more secluded - we walked to Turaco and realized it was sooo isolated which is not the vibe we’re going for. Speaking of vibes — the lack of kids makes it so enjoyable. The property was compact, but filled with great restaurants, gym, open-air yoga area, a fantastic pool, and a good amount of lounge area. Other reviewers complained about the amount of beach chairs — but I had no issues finding ideal spots and I was there during the high season. The pool is gorgeous and perfect temperature for the hot days. The private beach occasionally would have a beach boy sneak by, but security is present to shoo them away. And to be honest, people are just trying to make a living and they’re respectful enough if you say no/hapana asante. The rooms are gorgeous with a great washroom. They’re not big but the balconies are really nice to lounge in - and I would hang out in other parts of the hotel / outside of the hotel. The food was also great — so many healthy options in the breakfast buffet (including poke/sushi/chicken wings) with eggs/omelette/benedicts ready-to-order. The breakfast view is gorgeous too! The service is also impeccable and room service was so clean with a turn down service. As Asian tourists, sometimes you feel a bias against you — but definitely didn’t at this hotel. The staff are so lovely with food recommendations outside of the hotel (we didn’t book tours/transfers though, since hotel prices are always higher). There are towels available for excursions, there’s lots of outdoor spots for rinsing sand off. And they jot down taxis that come and pick up their tourists, so there’s an extra layer of safety. All in all, really loved being here. I think Nungwi is not as crazy as people make it sound — and Z Hotel really gives you a great experience to relax on site but great access to nearby restaurant / town things. Everywhere in Zanzibar will be a costly drive away anyway, which is part of the travel experience on the island. Oh and the wifi is better than most hotel wifi in North America.

This hotel is one of the best we stayed in. From reservation to check-out, the staff went above and beyond to ensure we have the best experience. Before booking, we researched hotels in Zanzibar and found that Nungwi has the best beaches in Zanzibar. The Z Hotel beach is probably the best of the best. When we checked-in late at night, there were sandwiches waiting for us at the reception. We booked a sea view room with a balcony. What a great choice! The room was everything we hoped for. Clean, nicely decorated, with a very comfortable bed and most importantly great views of the sea. During our stay the staff at the hotel was super-friendly and attentive to every possible need we had. It was a truly amazing experience. The breakfasts at the hotel were superb with so much variety to choose from. We also enjoyed lobster dinner on the sand at the Sexy Fish restaurant. We will never forget this evening. Highly recommended! The sunsets at the rooftop restaurant are to die for. What amazing views and vibes! We used almost all the facilities including the pool, the modern and well-equipped gym, the restaurants, and the beach area. Everything was perfect. Security around the hotel premises operates 24/7. We felt secure all the time and everywhere. The hotel management is trustworthy, honest, and very helpful to all guests of this beautiful hotel. We will be back. Thank you all at The Z Hotel. You made us feel at home. For the unforgettable and beautiful memories we made here, special thanks to: - Mr. Ismael Korongo, reservations - Mr. Mohammed, restaurant - The reception staff - Housekeeping

The operations in this hotel are very professional and with high standards. The staff across the board were welcoming and friendly, special shout out to Catherine and Bright! Too many other friendly faces to catch all the names. We spent more time taking advantage of the amenities here than we do at most hotels for several reasons. We probably stayed in their best room, cottage #1. It has the BEST view of sunsets from the second floor, massive balcony stretching over the ocean during high tide, very comfortable lounge chairs, hammock, and couches. No jostling with other tourists or vendors when the sun was setting straight out in front of you. It still has a great view of the most active beach we've ever seen, so fantastic people watching too (footballing, Masai, activities, boat launching, acrobatic shows, etc.). Sexy Fish is right next door and has the best food among the restaurants, though Cinnamon and Marigold are fine options (the latter at Z2). Great breakfast options included, too. We felt we had the best of everything we might want with this cottage. Action when you want it, privacy as well. The beach is beautiful, water temperature was perfect. The massages we had here were very good and well priced compared to most hotels. A couple tips if you haven't visited here before: the vendors selling tours and activities can be somewhat relentless unless you give a polite and firm "no, thank you." They will not stop easily, though, if you hesitate. If you want to avoid most of this, take a stroll at first light, or when it gets dark, as many of them are not around at that time. 4-7pm is peak activity and bustling with energy. The Dhow tours are fun and interesting (if you like sailing and history especially), but if you are really into good snorkeling, you may need to take a smaller fiberglass boat. A group Dhow trip is not going to care as much about finding the good snorkeling spot because many tourists don't know the difference or have much experience or interest in snorkeling in clear water. The food, dolphins, sailing, and sunset included are enough for most people. Many dive shops would probably be better if snorkeling is your focus, but specify this with them before paying. When asking for anything, be specific about everything, including with your meal. Just because it says you'll get pancakes, banana, eggs, and bacon with a meal choice, you still need to tell them all those things when ordering or the bacon might not show up. Same goes with everything else you ask for on tours or otherwise. Tip on tips, they don't expect it, but appreciate when you do. Same across Kenya and Tanzania. We probably over tipped for luggage because lowest amount we had was $5s and 4 small bags. Bring smaller bills or get some shillings for this. 10% is a good tip, if you do, for tours and restaurants, but keep in mind there are a lot of Europeans coming here and many of them don't typically tip and if the service isn't great, I wouldn't do it (our Dhow excursion service with Boss Lady was minimal compared to most such tours we've had around the world, so we didn't tip as we normally would). It's up to you. Friendliness goes a long way here in any case. This hotel recommends giving a tip for all staff in an envelope at the end to the manager to distribute at "the end of the season." That seems like too much to trust one person, though, so we preferred mostly tipping on services we used and really...

Heerlijke maaltijden tegen redelijke prijs ($12; ‘catch of the day’) met die ontzettend vriendelijke bediening. ||Verstuurd...
