Sexy Fish Restaurant — Restaurant in Unguja

We had high expectations for Sexy Fish at the Z Hotel based on the reviews, but our experience was, unfortunately, a major letdown.

From the beginning, things felt off. When we booked the day before, the restaurant asked us to review the menu and send our order via WhatsApp – something quite unusual for a supposedly high-end dining experience. We went along with it, hoping it would streamline the evening. It didn’t. Despite pre-ordering, we still waited 1.5 hours for our food. We even asked them to bring the kids’ meals out first, but that request was ignored.

When the food finally came, it simply wasn’t good. The pasta was overcooked, the “catch of the day” was extremely dry, and all the prawn dishes had a strange, off-putting taste that everyone at the table noticed. On top of that, the service was poor – we had to repeatedly ask for drinks, the main courses came out at completely different times (leaving some guests just watching others eat), and one dish never even arrived. After all that waiting, the person it was meant for chose not to bother. The manager brought a dessert to apologize – and then, to our surprise, charged us for it.

The only redeeming part of the meal was the dessert – it was genuinely good. And to be fair, the atmosphere and interior design of the restaurant are beautiful – they’ve really created a lovely space.

But sadly, it’s a classic case of style over substance. The setting is great, but the food and service were well below expectations. Such a pity. We won’t...

We stayed at the Z hotel for 5 nights in September 2024. Our first night we booked in at the Sexy Fish restaurant for dinner. Views were 10/10 looking out onto the Indian Ocean. Starters were very good and arrived promptly however mains took 90 mins to come out and when they did, elements of both orders were undercooked. We fed this back to the staff however they seemed disinterested. Very very expensive meal in Zanzibar and I don’t believe it is worth the money despite the views.

Breakfasts every morning were very mediocre and the service was lacking every day.

All in all a good restaurant which has a lot of potential if the service issues are rectified.

Edit: on our final day we went to Sexy Fish, largely because that is the only option for breakfast at the hotel. We sat down at the table at 08:00, no interaction from staff at all, had to ask multiple times to order coffee/food. The waiter who finally took our order forgot to put the order through. Breakfast finally arrived at 09:00 after re-ordering again. The service is absolutely shocking and was fed back to the hotel.

This is an expensive restaurant in an expensive hotel and is definitely not...

A high end restaurant that serves fine dining sea food experience. The food was good, however the service was slow.

A racist incident occurred and there was a clear discrimination regarding smoking. One of the weirdest thing to be discriminated against. I was told that smoking is prohibited by the waiter and the host, however they turned a blind eye to the other 3 tables that were smoking in front of them. The host (from India) also stopped a waiter from speaking with them about smoking. I told the host that there are tables smoking, why am I not allowed to smoke? He claimed that they smoke when they aren’t looking, even though they were smoking (vaping) in-front of him.

Asked for the manager and told him that this is called discrimination, either no one is allowed to smoke, or everyone is allowed to smoke, he then proceeded to ask the tables to not smoke.
