All in all a very disappointing experience. Here’s an overview of my experience:- room(s): booked the Borneo suite (room #6) located on the ground floor. First impression highly negative as the room had a strong stench of humidity which literally took me by the throat. We had to move to another room after the second evening because the other travelling party was sick due to (allergy / asthma attack / constant coughing) the disgusting smell permeating every area of the room. We finally moved on the third day to room 8 which is one level just above room #6. Although not perfect, it was certainly an improvement. Probably because the room benefits from more sun exposure. The heritage style of the bathroom is very nice but obviously takes a backseat to the horrendous sanitary condition of the room. I was a bit underwhelmed by the staff reaction to our predicament since the first reaction was to suggest adding a dehumidifier in the original room. Only after intimating we would leave the hotel did we get a change of room. Overall, this is probably the worst room experience I’ve ever had (that includes cheap hotels during my student days) and I find it stunning that rooms which are clearly not fit for occupation are offered to clients especially considering the hotel seemed relatively empty. We ultimately left one day before since we were left with health issues and had to spend most of the time on the terrace.- facilities: (a) the swimming pool looks nice if you’re an instagram type but I didn’t manage to use it since it was not heated (there is little to no sun exposure at least in the afternoon so quite chilly), (b) the gym is fine if you stick to stationary bike or treadmill. The weights / machines section is essentially non-existent. Went to a professional and well equipped gym (Pump gym) about 25mn walk from the hotel (brisk pace) which charges THB 100 per session. - restaurant: from a visual perspective the restaurant looks nice (there’s only one I believe). The breakfast lacked in terms of variety but the quality was pretty good. Tried an in-room service the last evening as we were too exhausted to exert ourselves to walk to the restaurant. The food was OK but nothing special. Try Wanlamum near by which offers good Thai food at decent price and a nice setting by the river.- hotel premises: the hotel, the garden area and the bar / restaurant look great. Found it annoying that the cleaning staff spends the whole day cleaning the leafs in the garden area. You get this constant broom sound from very early morning. - service: found it to be uneven. The staff at the restaurant were very nice and helpful. Didn’t like being pitched twice an airport transfer at THB 1,100 (the airport is about 15 mn away). Do yourself a favour and just use Grab. The only compensation we were given for our lousy experience was a write off for a 5mn local call from the room fixed line phone. Never saw anybody from management taking an interest in our predicament.- location: the hotel is not exactly close to the city’s areas of interest but very straightforward to move around by ordering a car via Grab.It pains me to write such a negative review since I really wanted to like this place but our whole trip in Chiang Mai was completely wasted as my travel companion didn’t have the energy to move around after the second day and we had to cancel all our plans including excursions. It’s now 3 days since leaving the hotel and we have yet to be entirely on our feet due to the health issues we picked up and the rest of our trip in Thailand in likewise totally ruined. I’m sure some people will like the hotel (maybe some of the rooms with better sun exposure do not stink as much) but if you have issues such as asthma, allergies or maybe you are a person of a certain age I would highly suggest you try another hotel especially when you consider this is one of most expensive hotel in the...
Read moreI recently booked a 3-day stay at 137 Pillars House, Chiang Mai, for a romantic getaway with my fiancé, expecting an exceptional experience based on the glowing online reviews and personal recommendations. I even placed my trust in this brand further by booking another property of theirs in Bangkok. However, my experience fell far short of expectations.
From the outset, I communicated extensively with the property about our preferences, dietary requirements, and expectations, hoping to receive the highly praised hospitality I had read about. While they initially gathered all our details, none of these preferences were considered or fulfilled during our stay. Despite being a boutique hotel with very few rooms and almost no other guests at the time, the service was consistently lacking.
The breakfast options were extremely limited, and even though we informed them that we were both vegan, they offered the same dishes every morning for all three days. We ended up having to make do with just fruit, yogurt, or some bread, as they did not make any effort to customize the menu to accommodate our needs. Their pretense of concern and hospitality during check-in proved to be just that—a facade.
The room itself was well-maintained, but I was shocked to find a cockroach in the bathroom, which I had to handle myself using mosquito spray. While the property is surrounded by greenery, it came with an overwhelming number of mosquitoes, lizards, cockroaches, and other insects, making it uncomfortable to enjoy. Furthermore, the swimming pool area was under maintenance and appeared dirty, rendering it unusable.
The staff appeared hospitable, asking for minute details about our stay, but their actions did not reflect genuine care or concern. The disconnect between the beautiful pictures online and the reality we faced was stark, leading me to question whether the cold treatment we received could have been discriminatory in nature. Even after booking for three consecutive days and making a prior reservation with the same brand in Bangkok, our experience was far from satisfactory.
My previous stays at boutique hotels have been marked by personalized service and attention to detail, often exceeding expectations. Unfortunately, 137 Pillars House failed even to deliver on the basics, let alone go above and beyond. My excitement and trust in this local Thailand brand were completely shattered, making this stay a total waste of money. I cannot, in good faith, recommend this...
Read more137 Pillars House Chiang Mai manifested the most unforgettable destination wedding for my husband and I! We worked with our wedding planner (shout out to Wonders & Weddings) and 137 Pillar's event coordinator Tanyawan - the wedding really was everything. To summarize my thoughts: Location - steps away from Riverside restaurant/bar, a short walk to the Saturday Night Bazaar to the north, Wororot Market to the west, and Tha Phae Gate with all their many shops to the southwest. Location was great yet tucked into a quiet alcove for rejuvenating rest. Ambiance: 10/10! Romantic, lush, serene - the color palette of white/rich deep brown/jungle green really melts away the urban setting of downtown/suburban Chiang Mai. The main entrance makes a huge statement with the water way, blooming floating flowers, grandiose reception area, and spa. The walkway to the guest rooms adorned by birds of paradise and immaculately tended gardens. The main 137 Pillars House itself was classic and sleek. The turquoise curtains and colorful orchids brought out the teak everywhere you turned. A huge shout out to the resident jazz band The Older Fashioned for playing MUSIC FROM THE LEGEND OF ZELDA that they learned especially for our wedding! They were fabulous! Rooms: We stayed in the William Baine Terrace Suite room. We pretty much died and went to heaven, we'll never be in a swankier room than this. THERE'S AN OUTDOOR SHOWER. I really peaked with this room. Food: breakfast was alright, but the real star was the wedding dinner. We made the fatal mistake of overfeeding our guests and inducing multiple comas, but that's on us. It was super difficult picking our set menu because the options were APLENTY. Service: Tanyawan and her team set up the most sumptuous display on the main teak tree we were married under. There were floral arrangements adorning the stairs to the main 137 Pillars House, our reception dinner tables, everything was saturating our senses into overdrive. Tanyawan's team worked hard to set everything up and take down punctually to not disturb the overall ambiance. Meanwhile, the wait and chef team outdid themselves. Service at the front desk was punctual, knowledgable, genuine, and efficient. I can't sing the praises enough. I would 100% recommend 137 Pillars House Chiang Mai for your next trip.
