GedikPasa Konagi Hotel — Hotel in Fatih

The staff were excellent - our room with a view was on the 4th floor and as this is a very old building, there is no lift, access is via a granite spiral staircase. If you have a cardiac, respiratory or mobility issue, be aware. Also this hotel is in the middle of the Old Town, from the Tram it is down a very steep hill and that means a climb back up to the centre of town, if you are fit, that's OK. The street has lots of nice family restaurants and a few local shops to buy fruit, water, Turkish Delights, this one in particular was genuinely very friendly. At the end of the hill and to the right approx 200m there is a very nice family restaurant, we went back a second time and would have again only for the climb back up. There was a huge selection, buffet style for breakfast (see photo) and some mornings they included, french fries and pasta. The area settled down by 1 am, a little later at the weekend. The local clean up crews, the refuse lorries etc, had no appreciation of people trying to sleep, the Cats argued for a while and the Seagulls woke up early and the Shoe Factories all around this area started work early and finished late. This might sound a little critical of the area - it's Not - it's just how it is, it is part of the character of staying in a living part of the Old City. We were not put out by it - in fact we enjoyed being part of a living city. We were about 15/20 minutes walk from most of the tourist attractions - the team is at the top of the road, buy an Istanbul Card, travel by tram is very cheap and they are very frequent, often crowded. Buy your card from the machine, it speaks several languages, DO NOT entertain the hustlers offering to 'help'. There is a huge heavily armed police presence throughout the city, security is not an issue. As we were there, there was some paused restoration work on footpaths around the area, these could be trip hazards. The Hotel offers an airport transfer service by luxury cab for €100 return - it's just over a 40km journey each way, we used it and recommend it.

Hotel GedikPasa Konagi - Central, Friendly, good breakfast and part of the Charm of the Old City - we stayed seven nights and YES we would recommend it. There are modern fancy hotels up the town but staying in them, you could be in any city in the world. Here you are in the middle of the culture of the Old City and you get that experience. Absolutely shocking hotel. I don’t even know how they can even call this place a hotel. The deluxe room was a very shoddy little room. The plugs where loose, the toilet door would not close. Half inch gap from the toilet floor to the door. Sheets soiled. Had to ask reception to change sheets. They would then check their system to see if we were eligible to have our sheets changed. I think it was a ‘three day’ rule. Even then this had to be requested. Furniture extremely outdated. Floorboards squeaking. Everything outdated. Different hangers in the same room. No iron. After requesting one from the reception the cables on the iron where exposed which looked extremely dangerous. The builders did a very shoddy job in our room. Only good thing was the AC in the room. The hotel ruined our stay in Istanbul. Hotel is on a very steep hill. It is very taxing to get up and down it every day especially in the heat. Even getting into the hotel is difficult as it has spiral stairs up to the main doors. Quite hard if you are dragging luggage up and down. Streets did not seem safe and extremely dark at night. Also the odour was atrocious. Breakfast was free for a reason as it was rubbish. Power cuts more than once. WIFI CONNECTION ABSOLUTELY RUBBISH. By far the worst hotel I have stayed in. Transfer could not even come to hotel due to bollards. Had to drag heavy luggage down the steep hill. Very dangerous. Glad to be home. Will never be coming back to this hotel! My mother and I only booked a short break with 3 nights, but we would have had no problems staying longer. This hotel was so beautiful!

The well English spoken staff more than friendly and helpful, showed us all the most visited places and attractions within walking distance, gave tips for nearby restaurants and booked for us a boat tour on the Bosphorus, including transfer. We even had the option to choose a room, decided on one on the ground floor, as the stairs to the 4th floor seemed a bit too gruelling for my mother. To enjoy the beautiful view from the roof terrace over the Marmara Sea or the blue mosque (and the interesting insights into the neighbouring shoe manufactories), we still had to climb up (likely). 😊

The room was just right for our purposes, clean, super comfortable beds, sanitary facilities in order (ok, toilet chair a little loose and joints in shower a little washed out...), self-regulating air conditioning was also available.

Breakfast in the historic cellar vault was very versatile and delicious, there was a large selection of both continental and oriental, hot and cold dishes, yoghurt/musli, melon and cake, juice and tea. Coffee only as an instant, who absolutely needs it ; )

The hotel is old (200 year old house!), but the charm in the family-run house is unbeatable, we felt very warm and welcome.
