Built by the architect Sinan in 1571–2, this mosque was commissioned by Sokollu Mehmet Paşa, grand vizier to Selim II. The simplicity of Sinan’s design solution for the Mosque’s sloping site has been widely admired. A steep entrance stairway leads up to the mosque courtyard from the street, passing beneath the teaching hall of its medrese Only the tiled lunettes above the windows in the portico give a hint of the jewelled mosque interior to come.Inside, the far wall around the carved mihrab is entirely covered in İznik tiles of a sumptuous green-blue hue. This tile panel, designed specifically for the space, is complemented by six stained glass windows. The “hat” of the minbar is covered with the same tiles. Most of the mosque’s other walls are of plain stone, but they are enlivened by a few more tile panels. Set into the wall over the entrance there is a small piece of greenish stone, which is supposedly from the Kaaba, the holy stone at the centre of Mecca

We visited the Sokollu Mehmed Pasha Mosque three days ago, and it truly exceeded our expectations. This site is an underrated gem, rich with history and significance, making it a must-visit for anyone in the city, especially for us as Muslims. The mosque houses four pieces of the Hajar Aswad, a detail that’s not widely known but adds immense spiritual and historical value to the experience. The atmosphere inside was serene and peaceful, and the cleanliness of the mosque was impeccable. What made our visit even more special was the guard inside the mosque, who took the time to explain the history and significance of the site to us. His knowledge and enthusiasm made the experience more enriching and memorable. We had such a wonderful time visiting this mosque. It’s a place that not only connects you to history but also leaves a lasting impression on your heart. Highly recommended for those looking for a meaningful and enlightening visit.

This was a lovely unexpected surprise on our way to the Blue Mosque. İn many ways this is probably the most beautiful hidden gem of all the mosques in the Fatih area. How delighted I was to find out that this is a mosque of a Grand Vizier. Do you know that Sokollu Mehmet Pasha mosque/mosque has a piece of stone from Kaaba ? Don't miss this place. More than a place of worship, it is an amazing piece of architecture ! The interior (kibla) is decorated with marvelous Iznik tiles, in abundance. It's worth a visit. It is in the same area with Küçük Ayasofya mosque, the former orthodox church of SS Sergio & Bacchus (a must be seen attraction), a monument from Justinian and Theodora time. Address: Küçük Hagia Sophia, 34122 Fatih / Istanbul.İt is also really close to Ayasofya and the Blue Mosque it self. Yes there is steep hills on your way to here but look you need to work before you can enjoy life's hidden gems.

Avludaki kubbeler kapatılarak Kur’an Kursu yapılmış. Üst pencerelerde ise çiniye işlenmiş hüsn-i hat yazıları yer alıyor. Çiniler üzerindeki motifler gerçekten çok güzel. Hülasa bu cami özellikle gidilip görülmeye değer camilerimizden. Cami Mimar Sinan’ın eseridir. Camiyi II. Selim’in kızı Esmahan Hatun Sultan tarafından eşi sadrazam Şehit Mehmet Paşa adına 1571 yılında yaptırılmıştır. Caminin en önemli özelliklerinden birisi gerek cami içerisinde gerek avluda hüsn-i hat yazılarının çokça yer alması. Caminin avlusunda bulunan hazirenin penceresi üzerinde “Sokullu Camii Tekke ve Haziresi” yazan fotoblok tabelada öğrendiğimize göre külliye, cami, medrese, tekke, dükkanlar ve çeşmelerden meydana gelmektedir. Sokullu Mehmet Paşa’nın vakfiyesinde caminin eşi İsmihan Sultan’a hediye olarak yaptırıldığı belirtilmektedir. Tekke daha geç vakitte yaptırılmıştır. 1925 yılına kadar Halvetiye tarikatı hizmet vermiştir. Hazirede Mehmed Paşa ile İsmihan Sultan’ın oğlu İbrahim’in neslinden gelenler medfundur.

The blessings of Türkiye, Instanbul and in particular Sultanahmet is that you can find that just around the corner from where you are staying is a beautiful mosque built in the 16th century such as the Sokollu Mehmet Pasha Mosque.

The mosque does close straight after Fajr till about 10amish.

Point to note here (and maybe all through Türkiye) is that not only is it expected that you take your shoes off before entering the masjid as per normal but also that you only take your shoes off at the entrance of the interior of the masjid.

We had a bit of a strange experience here where the masjid staff advised us not to take our shoes off any earlier than the entrance to the inside because they consider the verandah/courtyard of the masjid impure perhaps due to visitors who walk around with their shoes on and all the stray cats and dogs that walk around. This was a bit left field for us because we consider the entire earth pure for prayer unless...
