This B&B is …..okay.|We arrived and couldn’t get in for 10 minutes, as nobody was answering the doorbell. I phoned them in the end to ask to be let in.|Once we got in, we were told we couldn’t pay as the card machine wasn’t working and they’d catch us another time - which is fine, but I didn’t see him again during my stay! I had to ask for him when I was leaving to settle the bill before I left.|We asked about car parking, as we were told parking was available. He directed me to the permit holders parking, but didn’t want to give me a permit. I explained that I was wary of a fine, so he told me to use the next door property’s car park - which also worried me!|We ended up managing, as we have a blue badge.|Breakfast the next morning, which is 8-9am only and we were told to be there on time, but us and 2 other families sat in the breakfast room for 15 minutes before someone came into the room and offered us drinks/food at 8.20ish.|The breakfast was fine, but not great. It was served by a young man who was wearing a sports kit - he was friendly, but the style of dress was a little odd for someone working. The toast was cold and the sausages weren’t great, but the hash browns were absolutely amazing - the best I’ve had! We had to ask someone at another table for butter, as we didn’t get any.|The room was comfortable, as were the beds. We were on the top floor, so it was quiet. The bathroom was tiny, but it did the job. It wasn’t the cleanest, but it was clean enough. There was a desk, a hairdryer, an air-con unit, a fan, some toiletries, kettle with teabags/coffee etc and a small rail for clothes.|The next morning, we realised there was another room for breakfast (we weren’t told previously) which had cereal, juice and fruit. I wish we knew the day before, as my daughter loves fruit and cereal. The communication wasn’t great though.|The older man serving breakfast was lovely. Our orders were right both days. |We didn’t get butter again the second day, so had to ask another table again.|Upon exit, there was nobody available to pay and I still hadn’t settled my bill, so I had to wait for them to go and get someone. I could have left without paying, which was a little worrying!|For the price, it’s fine, but it’s nothing special. ||I’d be unlikely to stay again unfortunately, all...
Read moreLocation: Really good location. Roughly 10 mins and you're at York minster and/or the Shambles. "Pound-a-pint" pub (Punchbowl) a two minute walk away. Only dodgy spot is the car park opposite the University which tends to be a hangout for junkies/shady types. Car Parking: Not bad, although a bit of a squeeze for larger cars. Roughly enough space for 8 cars, shared with another hotel next door. There is on street parking nearby if necessary. Scenary around hotel: Nice park opposite. Busy main road outside hotel, with zero good views from the hotel itself. Rooms: We had Room 6, the "Superior" double room. It looked pretty tired, with flaking silicon and mould in the bathroom along with cobwebs on the ceiling and stained net curtain. Plastic sheet on mattress meant for a pretty warm sleep. There is a fan in the room, and you will definitely need it as the room is airless. A bit of pampering and this could be a really nice room, although for the price paid we couldn't really complain. Bit disappointed that our towels were never changed during our stay. The bathroom is fairly small, so the less mobile or overweight may struggle. Hosts: Friendly enough, although there was a bit of a language barrier, and conversation wasn't naturally fluid. Wasn't ultra welcoming to be honest, but ok. Breakfast: Breakfast choices are fruit juices/tea and coffee, along with cereal and/or a full English breakfast. The full English was ok. One sausage, one piece of bacon, one hash brown, one egg and one spoon of baked beans. Verdict: This spot is ok. I wouldn't recommend it for people who are fussy about their room or people expecting 4* luxury. It's catering towards a budget type of clientele, and it isn't really too bad if you don't have high expectations. If you're looking for something to impress your significant other, this probably won't be the place. But if you're looking at a spending your days in York and surrounds, then this bed and breakfast fits the bill. The hosts are ok, and not too intrusive. The atmosphere is pretty peaceful and not too noisy. The distance to town isn't far (approx 0.5 miles). We'd probably go back just for a few days when the...
Read moreAbsolutely terrible. This place is a joke - I cannot understand how anyone could live with themselves providing such low standards and charging so much money. I asked them to recognise the low-quality experience by providing a partial refund, and they steadfastly refused. I highly recommend completely avoiding this place.
1 - I didn't expect the bathroom to be so small it was actually impossible to turn around in. 2 - I was caused injury, with bleeding, by the sharp edges of the shower, which were somewhat unavoidably caught when drying oneself in the extraordinarily cramped space. 3 - The bedsheets didn't fit the beds, and one of the beds had been dressed with the top bedsheet inside out. 4 - The quality of the bedding was extremely low. I suffered a great deal of itching during my stay, most likely due to this, though perhaps it was because of an insect infestation? I slept very poorly. 5 - There was a lot of loud banging during the stay. This included the poorly designed (or installed) door-closing mechanisms. However, there was also banging noise due to renovation works, something I most certainly was not expecting during my stay, and which disturbed my rest. 6 - The towels smelled strongly of mould. 7 - Despite having hanged the 'please service the room' sign up on both days before going out for many hours, the service wasn't done. On the second day we were informed that it couldn't be done as we were present, though of course, we could have left the room for half an hour again, as indeed we had done for several hours earlier that day. 8 - The Internet connection was not always reliable enough to stream video. 9 - Despite it being a twin room, they insisted they only had one set of keys. That's clearly absurd and caused a great deal of difficulty for us during our stay. They must, of course, have others, for servicing and safety, but they refused...
