I had high hopes for this place. The reviews that I read were positive overall. Almost too positive. The owners seemed friendly and attentive via phone call and WhatsApp both prior to and just after my check-in. I was allowed to leave my luggage there early rather than wheeling it around. I was also allowed to check in early. ||||Upon arriving at my room, I was impressed. The 1st floor room seemed clean, tidy, nicely furnished and included plenty of amenities (small fridge, coffee maker, TV with Netflix, lots of storage space). The bed was spacious and comfortable. ||||All seemed good. However, on my first morning, I woke to lots of noise from one of two neighbouring rooms. On that occasion, it was clear the occupants were not being noisy - and that the issue was the internal walls. They appear to be constructed of plasterboard, not brick. As such, they let noise through very easily. ||||This was annoying because the property is falsely listed on sites such as Hotel.com and Booking.com as ‘Soundproof Rooms’. It’s one of the main reasons that I selected it. They’re far from soundproof. ||||I raised this with the owners via WhatsApp the next morning but, despite them reading it, I received no response. ||||It got worse. Because it soon became apparent that the occupant in the other adjoining room - Room 2 - was either high on drugs or mentally ill. At night and in the morning, I could hear him roaring, groaning and making these scary animalistic noises. ||||It was quite frankly unnerving that he was next door to me. I had no idea what mental state this person was in, why he allowed to stay, and what he was capable of. And what’s worse, because this is an unmanned property, I had no one to report this to (remember that this is not a hotel, with reception, and my last feedback was ignored). ||||It’s worth making it clear that this is not a hotel, nor a B&B. Read moreThe staff were extremely friendly and assessible at all times. They were very accommodating and couldn't do enough for me. The room was modern and very clean, with free hot chocolate, tea and a fancy coffee machine with coffee to use! The bed was extremely comfy! The staff gave us a complementary free upgrade for our stay which was amazing, due to staying for celebrations! They went above and beyond for us. The walk in to town took around 15 minutes, therefore wasn't bad at all. We pick a lovely few days for our stay which made it even better! The only thing we needed to do was book somewhere for food and drinks... I would recommend doing this because we struggled to find any while we were there. The staff messaged on the day of arrival with a guide of how to get there, parking, places to go etc, and the same on departure which was helpful as they gave us places to go for breakfast! However we decided to go to Osbourne's @68 on Gilllygate for breakfast... Definitely recommend them, the service, food and drinks were amazing and reasonably priced! Thank you...
Read moreI have stayed at the vanguard before and found it to be worthy of five stars however Nayems management of a problem that could of absolutely ruined our weekend is really what makes this company a five star business. I booked for 6 of us to stay in 3 rooms several months in advance (I believe just after a process change in booking) I contacted Nayem Thursday to check what the check-in details were for the following day and it was realised that one of the rooms has been double booked for one of the nights...my heart sank! Nayem promised he would sort and within 20 mins he had sent us a couple of links to really lovely properties and asked us which we prefered and soon had us booked into a gorgeous house for the full weekend at his expense. Nayem was on hand the next day to ensure we were able to check in ok and the property was acceptable. We have had the very best weekend. It's not the mistakes that define a person or a business it the way those mistakes are dealt with, this is why I have given 5 stars today. I would hesitate to book into the vanguard...
