We booked with Hocus Pocus in York for a one night weekend stay at the end of the Jorvik Viking Festival and it really was perfect. The hotel is a short walk from Q-Park carpark, as well as others, and is very easy to access thanks to the secure keypad systems on the doors. It's warm, clean, and cosy.
From the outside it's fairly nondescript, but as soon as you step through the main entrance you're hit with the theme; everything from the decorations to the music to the layout, is all on point. The hotel is essentially unstaffed so you show yourself in and up to your room, but as the name suggests, it is tiny so you won't be getting lost. If you do need any help, there were contact details for the management / staff in multiple place so I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue getting hold of anyone. The stairs could be considered a little steep and narrow for some people, so keep that in mind as you'l be carrying your bags up & down them, but for most people this shouldn't be an issue.
We stayed in the Sorceryum which was a beautiful room, honestly the pictures on the website do it justice. Everything was clean for our arrival, the tea & coffee was well stocked and much appreciated, and the bed was huge and comfy. The bathroom was nice, water was hot, bath & shower both lovely. Whenever we went back to rest we felt right at home, especially with the amount of Vikings wandering around the city!
The hotel is situated on the shambles, right next to Valhalla and opposite Pivni with a plethora of pubs and restaurants nearby. At night, there was noise. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I expected considering the location though, and the room has big heavy shutters that helped to mitigate it. The provided earplugs helped. Honestly I've had worse night sleep in much more secluded hotels and it really wasn't an issue.
During the day we looked out the window while a walking tour was going past, and the tour guide highlighted the hotel. The tourists seemed to love us giving them a wave from the window, and we got a lot of funny looks from people whenever we went in our out of the front door, which made us feel a little special haha!
Overall I would 100% recommend this hotel and hopefully will be able to stay...
Read moreWe stayed for 5 nights. It not like other hotels where staff are on sight. But there is a number you can call if any problems or need anything. They answer quickly and any problems are sorted quickly too. We had to call because our door code wasn't working and was sorted right away.
Right hotel is situated very close the shambles and the market is on doorstep. Lovely area to explore and some wonderful restaurants. The valhalla pub is next door. Lovely pub to visit. The hotels rooms are small and compact. But have everything you need for a unique stay. Staircase is small and steep. But lovely decorating to go with the theme of the hotel.
I would stay again but just for a night.
Here is my why. This is not on the hotel but just my preference.
It is not quiet by the hotel because your right by the busy part of York. Early day time you have the market getting ready for the day, the pubs emptying the glass bottles from night before. People walking around. Night time there is a club close by and plays music till 4am. Hotel do provide earplugs for this. But we had a air conditioning unit in our room which we left on all night to drown some of the music out. The valhalla pub does have live bands some nights and this is next door to hotel. We really enjoyed one of the singers from our bed and even clapped when finished, while having a cup of coffee. He was a good singer. The bed did need a mattress topper or a new mattress as evening hubby said it felt a little uncomfortable.
Now before someone comes at me I am not slating the hotel but just letting some people the honest truth with some honesty. I know some will slate it and be mean. But it is a unique hotel and really done out good. Like I said. I will stay again but for a night. But bare in mind if you dont mind music and bands and then the market then go. It is a lovely experience. Also dont give your hopes up on it being haunted. As never experienced a thing.
Oh nearly forgot. You have some costumes you can try out too. Yes that my hubby in a cloak.
But I look forward to...
Read moreWe planned a stay here several months in advance for my 18th. Over £150 for the sorceryum room. Attention to detail of the room was lovely and fitting to the witchy aesthetic, however upon arrival we found a note claiming the "tempermemtal" shower could be of unsuitable use. we took a look around our room, and we found numerous stray hairs clinging to the edges of the bathtub, aswell as a few on our pillows. After settling in we decided to prepare a cup of complimentary coffee found on a tray in our rooms, for some mysterious reason the kettle seemed to have a mind of its own, switching itself off after a few seconds of boiling. The bed was big and very comfy, three people could have easily fit in it with plenty room to spare. After returning to our room at 11:30, we were able to watch the television provided within the room. However, later on in the night there were multiple issues regarding other visitors creating a disturbance and preventing us from sleep. This is an issue we found with the unmanned reception: the lack of guidance and no one to report disturbances or room cleanliness to.
Another minor issue we encountered was the lack of a full-body mirror within the room, which we, and supposedly other guests, would have found very useful for getting ready for the days activities. To no fault of their own, the majority of the hotel is very narrow, some rooms situated up small winding staircases. We would not reccomend a pair to book an upstairs room if they have physical impairments or mobility aids. A suggestion would be to have more comfortable seating and a body-length mirror included within the room, just for the added luxury regarding the price.
As being in the center of the city, you should expect some noise disturbances from nearby pubs and bars, however the staff of the hotel offer complimentary foam earbuds.
Altogether, i would say it was refreshing to visit a unique aesthetic hotel, situated just in the heart of the gorgeous city. With what we've experienced, I can say we will not be...
