I visited this tremendous old york town real ale house on Wednesday 16th March 2022 This really retro pub served on my visit ,, it had 4 rare handpumped ales on offer Gentleman behind the bars was very helpful and friendly and decor and music playing comfy and also the pub had a good range of good food food on offer. I advise real ale drinkers to use this York pub Thursday 17th August 2023 This is one of Yorks' most interesting real ale pubs Note that the skull of f knows who under the glass floor As last time we visited excelent ales great drinkinking areas inside and at the outdoors at the pubs frontage Great staff with pleasent drinkers imbibing in great real ales 1 question""""" owners who brew valhalla ales👍😁 Tuesday 10th July 2024 I was in York today, so I felt it rude not to have a drink and see if this great real ale pub has changed in any way from my previous visits. This great real ale bar in the Shambles area has not changed at all it's still a terrific place yo drink grand real ales and real ciders . it still has on offer. There are great authentic interiors, great little outdoors, seated drinking areas, and used this today😁 The people using this real ale gem are tourists from all over the world, and the food is a big seller Sadly, I came to drink the pubs real ale and real cider

I wanted to love this place. The website had me so excited but it was overpriced and a little underwhelming. We ordered the meat balls, ribs, and sausages which were all pretty tasty but the servings were small for the £ you pay. We ended up spending £52 on 5 drinks and 3 tapas. The bar staff definitely bring down the experience. I was hoping to learn a little bit about mead but instead I was spoken to like an idiot for not realizing the name of the mead on the menu was in fact the brand name. The barman made me feel like I was an inconvenience to him, which dampened our time here. He carried a notable dark cloud of grumpiness wherever he went. I will say, the girl who served us was pepped up and friendly. We sat inside, down stairs at lunch time on a week day. The theme of the place is cool and creates a fun unique vibe. It was however a little empty and cold. (not in temperature but in mood) Upstairs has so much more atmosphere though & it would be interesting to see if there is more buzz and character when the place is full or by the evening. If the fires places are lit, that would automatically create a more authentic experience. The music was also pop, not rock, which again, not the mood I was expecting, from the website.

Loved visiting here, I've been twice now on seperate visits to York, the atmosphere is dark but chilled, there's viking carvings and decor everywhere. The owner was a total lovely and gave me a free mini pint glass as I found it to be the cutest thing I've ever seen, the staff are just all around lovely people. If you're lucky like i was first time you'll see a viking party upstairs where everyone is dressed up. They sell their own merch as well and the location is right off the Shambles so after a quick wander there you can go into valhalla for a drink. The only let down sadly is the toilets were bad when I visited, smelt of urine, they're shared bathrooms as there's no room for any real big toilet facilities so men and women use the same little cubicle you can lock, there was a whole tissue roll in a pool of urine and sadly that put me off wanting to go toilet there. There's not really any disability access if you have a wheel chair and you won't get to see the other two floors sadly as it's all stairs. But otherwise it's honestly a must to visit.

I was recommended by a friend to come here to try the rhubarb mead while visiting York on holiday. It's cool looking place that's decorated to be Viking themed with lots of drink options, including a whole mead menu We came for dinner as well and my partner enjoyed the tapas style plates while I had the veggie Sif platter. I did feel the veggie options were a bit limited (though to be fair I expected that in advance from somewhere that's Viking themed) and would have liked some more options, but I did really enjoy the platter. I tried both the rhubarb and black cherry mead and really enjoyed both - I've only tried Lindisfarne mead before and just found it ok so it was great to try mead from somewhere else and liked it much more.

We were back in York for a day yesterday and have to admit Valhalla was my main reason for visiting again so what can I say that hasn't already been said? As a Metal Head who like many has a liking for Norse mythology and all things Viking, I felt at home here straight away, it's epic. Beer and food were excellent and reasonably priced too especially as prices elsewhere were a lot higher. Great service and the staff were brilliant. My brother did get caught out by the chilies that gave his chips a kick he wasn't quite expecting though lol! I had to finish them.... gutted ;) All in all I can't recommend this place highly enough, simply awesome

Wanted to go here for a long time and planned it for my partners birthday surprise 😜..and we're not disappointed it was mid afternoon on a Monday as wanted to make sure we got a seat 😄..loved everything about it ...but in hindsight my only thing would be the glass glasses as everything felt so authentic..maybe tankard ? I don't know but loved it staff very helpful offering to take our pic etc...I even sneaked a peak at Our Father's Hall on the top floor..where it looked like staff having a meeting but they were more than happy to let me take a pic ..will definitely drop by next time we are in York...
