We were quite shocked to find out this was listed as the best restaurant in York by Google. Upon arrival we were greeted by a bouncer, as if entering a nightclub! Moreover, for our reservation at 20:45, we had to wait ten minutes. This was not a big deal but clearly it was not very well organised - you don’t expect to wait when you’ve made a reservation. We were starving too as we wanted to book an earlier table but that was all that was left. When we got our food it was okay but it was nothing special and for the price extremely underwhelming! I ordered a medium fillet steak but it was more medium-well, very little red in the steak and a bit dry. Also, the fries were more like chips and weren’t very skinny or crispy which I’d expect. The peppercorn sauce tasted like an average homemade sauce that I whip up with a beef stock pot, cream and pepper. We were also disappointed that many items we wanted to purchase were unavailable - the lamb and the bread for starters. This led to a more expensive bill as we were forced to order more expensive alternatives (the steak) since that was the only other thing we liked. The garlic bread was pretty good but a little bit dense. For the price, I expected something equivalent to the Hawksmoor (which I realise is more expensive but it’s not far off). The steaks had very little flavour here and hadn’t been charred in the way that the Hawksmoor manages to do so. It was ridiculous that all the sides weren’t included so that it amounted to almost £50 per person for a steak meal with chips and sauce. There’s other restaurants in York which don’t even specialise in steak that have better food and cheaper prices since they include more of the sides in the meal. The music was very loud in the restaurant and made it feel like a nightclub. There were also some very rowdy men sat next to us (clearly not the restaurant’s fault but it ruined the atmosphere a bit). It was difficult to hear each other. The fact there was a service charge after the extortionate prices was shocking too. We opted for a cash tip because the server was very good but I think for the price of the food, they shouldn’t dream of adding this charge. The night ended badly when I went to the toilet before we left. There was no toilet roll in all three cubicles in the ladies bathroom! Checks clearly need to be made more frequently. For a restaurant with high-end prices, this experience was far from high-end quality. I wouldn’t go back, there’s plenty of other independent restaurants in York that I’d rather...
Read moreUnfortunately my first time visit to cut and craft wasn't a very good one, was looking forward to this as I've not found a good steak place within the city centre. So to start the night I'd looked at the menu and they had a limited selection of steak sizes but when I was seated I was given the specials menu which they had also written on the wall for all to see a 36oz tomahawk steakhouse with sides for a reasonable price so I set my mind on this. Then when they came to take my order this was the point they felt was the appropriate time to tell me my selection was not available, I'd of thought it would of been better upon seating us to make people aware what wasn't available.
Then the knowledge on the steaks I found poor as they had a on the bone 14oz ribeye I was wondering over the normal 8oz ribeye how big was the bone is there a significant meat size increase to warrant the cost increase no joy so playing safe I went for medium sirloin no sauce and a couple of sides.
First attempt the steak turned up on a board with a luke warm stone slab with my steak on top with my juices running off onto the table a little too gimmicky in my eyes a warm plate so I'm able to put my sides on to it would of been better instead of eating everything as a single entity. But regardless of this my steak turned up more well than I was expecting so I raised my concerns and my steak and sides went back second time was far better. I think more seasonal vegetables could be put on the menu over having 20p worth of carrots and beets would be my opinion and the sweet potato wedges a little chunkier cut.
The drink I ordered as I'm not a lager person I do look out for the flavoured drinks a little more so I saw a rhubarb lager completely misleading with the description, they made it sound a creamy lager of milkshake consistency with lots of rhubarb ginger and vanilla flavours. What I got was a pink-ish lager with hints/notes of rhubarb.
I ordered a dessert 2 different mouses with honeycomb loved the description to the mouse tower with 2 maltesers sat on top is what I got its laughable.
So all in all 2 stars is all I can give was the atmosphere good and staff friendly, yes but I went out for a meal.
It's worth a visit but as you might have a better night than I did but there are better options out there. They boast about been independent and honest, they honestly should be using better suppliers of produce and try using local...
Read moreMe and my wife went for a meal recently during a trip to York on 3rd July 2023, the original waitress was lovely and the food was great, however when we got to the bill, I’d worked it out in my head the meal should be around £130 ish. So I was surprised to see £175, after talking to the table next to us, they noticed a service charge on the bill, which was optional as stated at the bottom of the receipt, so the service charge was around £20, I asked the waitress if I could have this refunded back onto my card as I’d already paid without looking at the bill in detail, and I’d leave a tip on the table, my wife went over to the manager to sort this out and to our surprise the manager refused to do it stating that the service charge is mandatory, after coming back to the table me and my wife reviewed the bill again just to confirm that it was indeed optional. So I myself went over to the manager and asked her why she has just told my wife it was mandatory to pay the service charge when it clearly states on the bill it’s optional, she just stared at me, then I requested to have it refunded and explained i like to leave cash tips for the staff rather than it come off my card, she said “well it’s all the same, whether you pay it on your card as a service charge or you pay cash” I was shocked with the audacity of this women telling me how to spend and use my money, it definitely isn’t the same, as you don’t get to choose the amount of service charge added and you can choose the amount of cash you leave, but that is besides the point, she bare face lied about the service charge to my autistic wife, so she took it on face value as she does not process social situations the same way. She refunded it eventually and we tipped the delightful waitress. We will not be returning due to the rudeness of this manager. It kind of ruined our evening as we’d had a lovely night up till that moment. I’d like to take a moment to thank I believe Dumitrina, that’s the name on our receipt, if that’s the waitress than thank you for being so lovely. We do not blame you in anyway for how the end of the evening went, the service you provided up till that point...
