This was our second visit to The Dog & Fox for my partners birthday. We booked a Boutique Double and requested a quieter part of hotel and if possible one of the turret rooms, as last year we suffered with noise from the road, barrel deliveries being above the pub and the stables. On arrival we were greeted in a real friendly way by Kelsey and Sophie who said we would be in the same room again, when I asked if they could give me a quieter room & possible an upgrade at first it didn't seem possible ..Then Sophie said yes they could and we ended up in The Village room and were shown up personally by her. She did explain later that the air conditioning wasn't working which didn't bother us as we had a door open to the balcony and the room was pretty quiet. I booked a package including breakfast and dinner on one night but when we tried to explain to staff in resturant that we had a credit they seemed puzzled and the manager had to be called to sort the bill this happened last year too The young girl on our first night gave amazing service to us in a busy resturant including a rendition of happy birthday to my partner 🙂 Service at breakfast the following morning was not the same standard, slow no sugar offered for coffee had to ask and for spoons too also no knowledge of what our breakfast included, if at all from the buffet and when I questioned it the excuse was used that they didn't know as hadn't done breakfast before but at the same time she made me feel like a nuisance when they had to find out. I think the breakfast was better last year and there was more choice of pastries juices etc in fact the second morning there were no juices at all The bed in the Village Room was very hard to sleep on but when I spoke to Sophie the next morning straight away she organised a mattress topper and extra pillows that I also asked for. She is a credit to the Dog & Fox and to the hospitality industry and Kelsey seems to be following in her footsteps We love the history and the feel of The Dog & Fox and hope to return next year and try one of the Bigger...

Read moreI was looking forward to my Sunday roast, and was really hoping it was as good as Ive had before. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. We ordered the charcuterie board to share to start and this took about 45 minutes to arrive (I appreciate that they were busy but Ive eaten here before when its busy and NEVER has anything taken this long). It finally arrived but with a substitution of a slightly soggy sausage roll instead of the chicken liver parfait. Our lovely waitress apologised after I queried this and said that as we had waited so long for our starter she would gee up the mains and offered us free dessert (she didnt have to but it was appreciated).
No sooner had we put the last mouthful of the starter into our mouths but the mains appeared, no break no rest. The beef was not rare and the yorkshire pudding was sat on top of what could only be described as minced school dinner beef which was quite frankly awful. Again our wonderful waitress stepped in and replaced the meal without the mush and a slightly rarer piece of meat.
I wish I could stop there but when the Eton mess arrived, well it was just a pile of cream with strawberries not a bit of meringue in sight, the lovely Alex took one look at it and said we wouldnt have to pay for it, when I told him it was going to be free anyway he offered us a drink.
I love the Dog and Fox and the only thing that made up for the second rate food was the wonderful staff doing a fab job in very difficult times. Maybe we will just drink in the pub instead of...
