Let me preface this by saying that for some guests, this could be a 4.5 hotel or higher, and for others a 2 star, depending on your lifestyle — primarily because of the extreme noise levels before 11 pm. If you are looking for a lively and hip place to stay that makes you feel like you are back in college, only a bit more posh, this is the place for you. If you are traveling with a family or need to go to sleep before 11 pm, you might want to consider another location.
We stayed in the blue Samford Suite with our 1 year old daughter on the 2nd floor. The decor has a grown-up Urban Outfitters feel and so many details have attended to, like spa robes, a Keurig with Starbucks pods, and complementary waters. The shower had a fantastic waterfall function and beautiful inlaid shell accents. The balcony was also spacious and a fun addition.
The noise levels, however, were akin to a youth hostel or fraternity house during a party. At 9 pm on a Wednesday night the noise from the bar was so loud that we could literally hear multiple conversations while lying in bed in our room with the door closed. At around 10 pm there was a collective roar of “Yeah!” that boomed from the downstairs bar and was so loud and unexpected that it made us laugh out loud. In addition, if someone had told me that the Lippizaner Stallions we’re performing on the floor above us, I wouldn’t have been surprised. There were constant and loud footsteps from whatever area was directly above us. I simply think that in the building conversion from Dorm to hotel, sound dampening was not adequately considered. There was a conair white noise machine in room, and a heavy lobby curtain that was pulled after the bar closed, so I assume they are somewhat aware of this.
Also, although we had a late checkout approved for noon, a maintenance team of 3 men knocked on our door at 10 to repair a faulty lock. Although they apologized for the inconvenience while they worked, the intrusion was awkward, so we decided to just go ahead and check out at that point instead of coming back to our room.
Overall, I’d say that the stay was a mixed bag. This hotel has tremendous style and potential, especially for the price, but they do need to get some major kinks worked out especially in the noise department, or warn guests that it can be noisy until...
Read more1st let me say, the hotel is so beautiful, smells so lovely and the entire staff exhibits true southern hospitality. My husband is an alum & in town for business, so the CoHo was to be the perfect spot! Hubby's meeting was moved up, so we arrived in town at 9:30am on the day of check-in. I figured I had nothing to lose so I called the CoHo to ask about an super early check-in. To my total amazement, the owner said come on! I basically had a free day! The room (110-1st floor) was so nice, smelled amazing, spotless clean and top-notch amenities. I had a very nice, relaxing day to myself! We make it back to our room, after dinner, around 9pm, the lobby bar is packed, didnt think a thing about it...until the door closes on our room. It's L.O.U.D. but hey, it's early still & we are reasonable people. However combine that with noise from above us and we were dreading sleep. The owner had been so nice about checking in, I just couldn't complain. Thought things would be fine after a couple hours. It wasn't. We could discern conversations from the bar. All noise seemed amplified. Guest doors closing, hall walking, whatever it was above us....so loud! This went on for hours. Hours. We eventually slept & overall had an great weekend in auburn. I wouldnt stay at CoHo again just for the noise. Everything else was perfection but noise is the one thing that can ruin a stay. If you are bar people & you like that atmosphere you will probably be fine. If you have little ones, it will be a nightmare. If you are looking for peace & quiet,...
Read moreI would provide a 5 stars but just can't. The owner is beyond nice, super helpful, and very gracious. What they have done with the building is really amazing. The location is awesome !!! But ... because of the building construction (older building) and materials, the hallways are noise cannons especially the area right off the elevator on the 2nd floor. You hear EVERYTHING* from the first floor as the sounds just bounce off everywhere. If you happen to get any of the rooms right off the elevators on the 2nd floor, be prepared to listen in on EVERY conversation at the front deck is UTTER crystal clear detail. In the evening if anyone is in the bar, it is a cacophony of noise. Thankfully after I mentioned it, they have at least seemed to have dealt with the front desk phone which was worse noise on the 2nd floor than the conversations were. Heck, listening to a front desk conversation almost word for word right now as I type this.
If you are patient, understanding, can tolerate the noise at this hotel, this really is a great boutique property. Not saying the noise is constant, it is not. But when folks are checking in, the front desk is talking with guests on the phone, or the bar starts spreading a bit of cheer, well, the noise is...
