This B and B has a perfect location, 150 yards from the train station and just a bit more to all of Blue Ridge.
The staff and owner are exceptionally gracious, helpful, and accommodating. We had several small special requests, and every one was satisfied with grace. Their recommendations for activities changed our brief stay for the better- they are a great source of info.
The breakfast is delicious and ample, with yogurt, a homemade muffin, and an egg/sausage/bacon dish of one type or another. Fruit is also readily available. Coffee is always on hand via a Keurig but a large pot is also made fresh every morning.
What keeps this inn from being a 5 star review is its condition and renovation. The house dates from 1890, and was not one of the grand mansions that are the basis for some B and Bs. It was essentially a New England salt box with added porches. Over the years portions of the porches have been enclosed, and a kitchen brought into the building (surely an outbuilding in 1890). The last significant renovation, however, appears to have been in the 1990s, and the various renovations and remodels do not provide visual or structural cohesion.
The interior has open lath walls but also poorly restored plaster, mixed with mdoern wallpaper. Carpets are a mix of decent machine made orientals but also berber in the upstairs clearly covering unrestored floors. The furniture is a mashup of periods. Our room had an iron bedstead and a beautiful quilt, with a modern soft chair and art deco mirrors (!). The curtains and sheets were 80s/90s styled, which even if going for a modern look is dated.
There are a couple of small public rooms that also have a wild mix of items taht are not old enough to be antiques but also not in good condition. Almost everything in the house is for sale, which gave me the impression the house is as much an 'atiques' shop as B and B.
The house has a beautiful entry hall and front door, but despite this the owner has opted to have guests enter from the back, through a parking lot, and into a hall off of which are the laundry and kitchen. The inn would make a far better impression if a guest entered through the front door, and I suspect the public building across the street would allow parking.
All in all, a very nice stay with good food and great people and location, marred by property condition and concept. I hope the house will be given the TLC it needs because in every other way it's a great...
Read moreMy husband and I looked forward to an overnight get away in this highly rated B&B. all was good leading up to the visit. The Inn sent helpful information ahead of the visit. The Inn was easy to find. Parking was convenient. the host who greeted us was friendly and informative, giving us a brief tour of the hotel and telling us the history. The Inn is charming. Our room was cozy, warm, and clean. The bathroom was concerning with a big step up required, which would be an issue for people with fall potential. The shower was tiny, had no handle inside to be able to pull the door closed, and the European shower head fell off of the latch and we were not able to put it back on. The room was quiet other than occasionally hearing conversations next door - the walls are thin. We should have been forewarned by the host having pointed out the sound machine in the room, but who wants to listen to white noise from a machine when you're in the North Georgia mountains? Finally, the biggest disappointment was breakfast. A positive was that the servers were friendly and efficient. A lukewarm biscuit was smothered with pimento cheese and served before we even had coffee or tea. Speaking of tea, i asked for tea and was asked what "flavor" i would like, which was a bad start. I asked for Earl Grey, which she said she had, but it was decaf. She came back with a lowly brand of an English Breakfast tea bag. The breakfast was a sickeningly sweet french toast and potatoes. I took one bite and pushed the plate away. When asked how everything was and I said it was too sweet and i couldn't eat it, i got no response. The yogurt, potentially something healthy, was bland. It was painful to then get the bill for $400. this place is not worth even half...
Read morePARKING: Parking may be an issue for you. Their reserved parking is only 5 spots, so if those spots are full, head straight to city hall parking lot across the street. We had issues when we arrived after hours (pre-planned with the employees who confirmed our stay), and the phone number provided to reach the innkeeper did not work when we called around 8pm about parking questions. Thankfully, we found parking at city hall from their online/guidebook instructions. And once you are parked at city hall, unless you have someone standing in a free spot at the Inn - do not leave, even if you see an open spot!! When I attempted to relocate from city hall parking lot to the Inn, in the 2-3 minutes it took me to drive from city hall to the Inn, three cars snagged three empty spots that were there when I left. Parking is vicious, especially on the weekends during the day. SERVICE/BREAKFAST: Service was excellent. They made several dietary accommodations and breakfast was both easy and delicious. We greatly appreciated their level of service around food accommodations and breakfast arrangements. GUIDEBOOK/APP: I was unable to access the app, and the instructions they gave for downloading the guide/installing the app was not accurate - it claimed that my device would prompt me to download the app, but that didn't happen. And when I went to the app store to search, I didn't see anything titled similarly to what they titled it. I recommend they include a link to download the guidebook app in the future rather than relying on an automatic prompt that may not appear for everyone. OTHER ITEMS OF NOTE: We enjoyed our stay in the Appalachian. The cat "Blue" was very friendly and we enjoyed...
