Five stars and all absolutely deserved. I spent a weekend here alone to relax and rejuvenate myself and I did not want to leave!
Tammy greeted me at the front porch upon check-in Friday afternoon and immediately I felt right at home with her. We chatted for a while and she told me about a few places to see in town and gave me a few dinner options. I met another couple staying the weekend and chatted with them and Tammy gave me a tour of the property and a few brochures.
My room, the Virginia Wilson, was adorable and cozy with red and wood hues, a comfy bed, and corner bookcases. Ah, adorable!
I had dinner at The Shanty and walked around the town into the shops where everyone was just as friendly as Tammy had been.
I returned to the inn to relax and bumped into Tammy and her husband, Jim, while getting something to drink at the little kitchenette space for guests which has an ice machine, wine, soft drinks, water, tea, etc. We chatted for a while and they suggested a few movies from their DVD collection for the evening.
The next morning breakfast was served promptly at 0830 to all 7 guests (8 is the max for the inn but since I was a single there were only 7) and we enjoyed a warm egg soufflé (YUM) with some homemade salsa and jams and fresh fruits and orange juice, coffee and teas. Tammy and Jim talked to us and we all made pleasant conversation together about plans for the day and suggestions.
I had planned to drive to Chincoteague but decided instead to explore the town, shop, walk the beach, have some brown dog ice cream (it's the best, really) and lay out on the porch to read a book. Tammy and Jim had to leave for a reunion so Erica, another innkeeper was there, she's younger and super friendly. She welcomed me back in the afternoon after my walk and spent a little time talking with me on the front porch. I then napped and read a book for a few hours before walking to the beach, taking photos, and listening to live music in the park right behind the inn. Jim had left folding chairs out for us.
I spent my second night reading on the screened porch and met the neighbor who came to make sure everything was OK since Tammy and Jim were away for the night.
Erica returned early in the morning and served us all ooey gooey French toast with fresh berries and bacon. Yum! Again, we had a pleasant conversation at the table of seven with four new guests from the day before and three of us who already knew one another.
The location is excellent - it's right on the corner of Tazwell and Peach and you can easily walk to all the shops and dining (5-10 minutes) and the beach (5 mins). The big park is also right behind the inn and you can walk in the lovely gazebo or under the vined lattice awnings carefully kept by the garden ladies of the town. I loved it. I didn't have to start my car once the entire weekend.
I am charmed by both Cape Charles and Bay Haven, which truly was a haven for me when I needed a weekend to recharge my batteries, I can't wait to...
Read moreWe had never been to Cape Charles before and when we first pulled in to town our reaction was “well two nights will probably suffice”. Boy were we wrong. Even if our visit had been limited to staying at the Bay Haven Inn, it would have not been enough time. The Inn is lovely. Our room was perfect - beautiful and comfortable. The front porch was a restful haven where we met and had interesting conversations with a range of guests while enjoying coffee, a novel or afternoon wine. The breakfasts were delicious and Tammy and Jim were delightful hosts with an instinct for knowing just how much to interact with guests. We have stayed in a lot of B&Bs over the years and this ranks at the top.
In addition, we found plenty to do away from the Inn and plan to return to do more exploring. We enjoyed biking and walking around Cape Charles and biking along the Southern Tip Bike and Hike Trail. We explored the shops in the quaint town and had a lovely dinner at the Hook-U-Up Gourmet. We also enjoyed a delicious burger at the Cape Charles Brewing Company and my husband said each beer he sampled was delicious. We also visited the Cape Charles Museum and the Barrier Island Center. I would recommend them highly and in that order. The docents at each were very knowledgeable and provided an interesting history of the town of Cape Charles and, more broadly, the evolution of life on the peninsula related to the barrier islands that protect it.
We will return to Cape Charles to visit our favorite spots and to further explore other parts of the Peninsula. Thanks, Tammy and Jim, for providing a home base for our...
Read moreI was lucky enough to get the last available room for a weekend on Cape Charles. We stayed in the Virginia Wilson Room and it was an absolute haven. You see, we were in the middle of a crazy heat wave and we had an outdoor wedding to attend as well during said heat wave. The Inn provided a cool soothing retreat from the heat of the day and night. I cannot stress how comforting it was to know it was our home base for the weekend. From the cool, unbelievably quiet rooms to the absolutely amazing breakfasts we just absolutely loved it. Tammy and Jim - the owners - are just wonderful hosts. They know everything there is to know about the town, its history and the history of the building itself. Between Tammy's cooking and Jim's baking, you will not go hungry during your morning pursuits whether it's the beach or a stroll on Mason. Even if it's hot, sit on the front porch on the swing. I did both days I was there and it is now a life goal to have one on a porch at my home. If you are looking for a weekend getaway, this is the perfect one. I would suggest checking out the Cape Charles Community FB page for their many events. There was a concert in the park right next door to the Inn that I wish we could have attended. I hope to have a weekend there in the future to attend one. You do not need a golf cart and they can be hard to come by. The two block walk to Mason is very easy and the streets are very quiet. If you choose to visit, I know you...
