I heard about this ice cream shop awhile ago, and I’m so glad I finally got a chance to try it for myself! It exceeded my expectations! The shop’s name is a nod to and actual “Brown” dog, and there are other little nods to him in photos and artwork inside. In keeping with the canine theme, the smallest serving sizes are adorably called the “Pup Cup” or “Lil Pup” cone. The ice cream flavors are delicious, and some have fun names like Cape Charles Sunset (which I wanted to try on my first visit, but it sold out right before I could place my order). Between two visits we’ve enjoyed the following flavors: ES Coastal Roasting Co. Coffee, Strawberry, Pistachio, and a flavor that tasted like an old fashioned Creamsicle (unfortunately I can’t remember the exact name). The ice cream is so good that each time we’ve forgotten to snap photos before gobbling up these tasty treats!
The shop itself is a real delight and invokes a vibe of small town Americana! There are a few tables inside, along with counter seating and a window seat. There are also benches just outside the shop. When we arrived one Sunday afternoon, many patrons were enjoying this seating option. And it looked like a scene out of a Norman Rockwell painting. People (with ice cream in hand) were talking and laughing together and playing with their dogs. It was so inviting! Yes, there really is something special about Brown Dog Ice Cream! The staff is friendly and the ice cream is worth the trip to Cape Charles. Just one note: This place is really popular, so be prepared to stand in line. And maybe pick more than one flavor, just in case the one you want is sold out when it’s your turn to order.

Read moreAs a regular customer, I tell you each visit is more of a treat than the one before! You simply will not find better, more lovingly-crafted homemade ice cream anywhere! I would like to correct the falsehoods cited in the dishonest review by "Boat Life Adventures" left earlier today, which claimed the shop's requirement to wear a mask when ordering at the window was unposted. As pictured, it is posted on the window, there is a brightly-colored stand-alone sign a few feet to the left of the window that you cannot miss. There is another sign posted about 10 feet further down the sidewalk where the markers are for the line to form, and about another 10 feet down the sidewalk there is yet another posted on the corner, right next to the Town Government's sign requesting people to wear a mask. And in case the line is long enough to wrap around the corner, there is another sign on the side street. It is beyond shameful that the reviewer chose to mark a weekend meant for celebrating our great country with a lack of consideration for the welfare of fellow Americans and by falsely maligning one of the small businesses that make this country great. I have no doubt Brown Dog Ice Cream will continue to sell ice cream as fast as it can make it, the only "word spreading" is that his reviewer is a hateful little whiner who would be much happier vacationing in the petri dish that is...
