We booked this hotel to enjoy the Festive Friday celebration in Cape Charles due to its proximity to the downtown area. It also got very good ratings online which is how I usually decide on traveling accommodations. Upon arrival we were a bit shocked at the interior of this room. The furnishings were stark and very sparse....two swivel chairs, a love seat and a small table and chest of drawers in a huge, cavernous room. Not exactly "festive". There was a refrigerator but no microwave. The bedroom has a bed and a chair. The bathroom was huge but contained only a vanity...no shelving, no place to put any personal items. Most notably, this room was very dark and the windows were above our heads. You could not see outside. There was only one lamp in the living room and overhead lighting. No matter how many lights we turned on, the interior was dark and depressing. The bathroom was dark and the lighted mirror provided had a strange lighting function. The interior design contained an odd assortment of colors, none of which seemed to go with anything. The heating and air conditioning worked adequately. The bed was comfortable but the pillows were thin and were made for a standard sized bed. We had a king sized bed. The love seat was not usable....it was so hard you couldn't sit on it. The two swivel chairs were hard, hit us in the center of our backs and it was not possible to get comfortable in them. The shower had some drainage issues and the soap dispenser would not dispense more than a small squirt of soap for bathing. Fortunately there was a small bar of soap on the sink. Otherwise there would be no way to properly take a shower. There was a cob web on the door to the bedroom and the windows looked as though they had not been cleaned in a very long time. There was also a yellow ring around the water in the toilet when we arrived. The vanity also looked as though it had not been cleaned very well in a while. I felt as though someone had hit me in the head when I considered how much we paid for this room. While the location was great for our needs, I was regretting falling for the reviews I read about this place. I would never recommend this hotel under any circumstances. I will say, the person who checked us in was very pleasant. But there was no reason to bring forth our issues after we checked in since the place is what it is. We almost considered checking out on the second day and just eating the 400 dollars we would have lost jut to get home to somewhere comfortable. This place definitely needs a face lift and some good cleaning. Not worth the money in spite of its great...
Read moreWow, where do I start? This place exceeded my expectations! It’s pretty rare for us to choose to stay at an independent hotel, but I’m so glad we took a chance on Hotel Cape Charles! It’s a gorgeous building that somehow feels nostalgic and modern at the same time. It offers similar amenities as the larger chains, but with more personalized service and a staff that treats you like family (especially Ms. Pam)!
This hotel offers several gathering spaces, allowing guests the opportunity to enjoy communing outside of their rooms. Two of my favorites are the verandah and the gallery. The verandah is located on the third floor and boasts scenic views of both the town and sunsets over the Chesapeake Bay. The Gallery floor (which is where we stayed) has patio seating outside and a beautiful, tranquil seating area inside that is complimented by lots of natural light. It’s a wonderful space to enjoy the company of others, or just to relax an appreciate the artwork.
Our hotel room was spacious and comfortable. It was outfitted with a television, coffee/tea bar, and drawer space nestled into the bed frame for extra storage. The spa-like bathroom included a lighted vanity mirror, a deep tub and beautiful counter space. This was one of their cheaper rooms, and honestly, it felt like an upgrade!
Location is everything, and this one does not disappoint! Hotel Cape Charles is situated in the center of town making it convenient to walk to shops, restaurants and the beach. Their patrons can borrow bikes, beach towels and beach chairs free of charge. Or, if you prefer to cruise around town in a golf cart, patrons who stay two nights or more can rent them for $50 a day (with a two day minimum). The golf carts are limited, so it’s probably best to reserve one.
There are so many things that make this hotel special; I could go on-and-on. Like the Healthy Start complimentary breakfast, or the cute little hallway that connects you to Chuckletown gift shop. Hotel Cape Charles is a one-of-a-kind destination, and I really hope you get to experience it for yourself.
Notable Mentions:
Unfortunately, they are not able to offer discounts at this time.
Our room did not have a microwave. However, should you need to heat something, the staff can assist you with using the one in the cafe area.
The hotel has 1 room that is fully ADA complian.
This is a seasonal property. It’s open on weekends only in December and closed the months of January...
Read moreOur stay was very pleasant. Location was ideal obviously (with it being the only real place to stay that close to the bay). There were some things missed and unattended which I would usually dismiss unfortunately not for the price of this hotel. Let me start by saying the only reason we didn't address the hotel about these issues is bc we were there for such a short time and were barely in the room that to make it an issue at the time would have been more stress than it was worth to us and the staff. I'm more hoping it is something the hotel can address moving forward :)
-The plate on our door knob to the room was loose so every time we walked out it would come off more and more. There were crumbled up newspapers and trash in one of the cabinets. -The remote for the AC unit in the front was missing from the room (we weren't in the front area much so it wasn't a major issue for us). -Although we had a balcony view it was not as described on the website " private deck overlooking the Hotel patio" instead it overlooked the roof of what I believed was there storage room. -One of the outside showers had an awful smell coming from it on multiple days so we missed the chance to use that amenity. -There were dirty towels in the 'fresh' towel bin however the concierge gladly got us fresh ones from the back-stock.
(Did I watch too many episodes of Hotel Impossible before staying here?....haha)
Now Iet me end on a good note. The concierge I met (both the gentleman and young lady) were outstanding, they had a very laid back yet professional demeanor and were great for conversation and suggestions to places nearby. The overall feel of the hotel was slightly European with a communal and freeing vibe, great layout design and I couldn't love the incorporation of natural light anymore!
All in all the place was lovely and I'm glad it exists. My relatives lived and worked here so I love to see it growing, any issues they have are easily fixable and I hope they continue...
