I take back my previous five stars.
I am beyond angry and disappointed. I gave this hotel a very positive review after my first stay last year, and decided to recommend it to a large number of family and friends coming into Chapel Hill for my daughter's wedding. I also personally booked and paid for several rooms for members of the wedding party.
As I was trying to settle and go to sleep on the first night of my three night stay, the toilet began running, loudly filling with water every ten minutes or so. When I went to call the front desk, I realized we had a nonworking phone in our room. When I reached the front desk to ask for a repair or to be moved, they said there was nothing they could do as there was no maintenance person working at night and no other rooms available. Due to a disability, I was not able to get down onto the floor to turn the valve off as a temporary solution. I was promised that someone from maintenance would come by the next day while we were out at the wedding. They lied. That repair never happened.
I was irate because by this point we had so many belongings in the room and so many tasks to accomplish on a tight schedule that packing up to move to another room (that wasn't even suitable in setup) wasn't possible, and we still had two more nights ahead of us. I had to endure three nights of this noise, getting almost zero sleep on the most hectic, stressful, and tiring weekend of my life. I was so exhausted I could barely enjoy my child's wedding festivities and was extremely anxious when I then had to get on the road to drive home on inadequate sleep.
The fact that the hotel made quite a bit revenue based on my recommendation to a couple of dozen friends and family members makes me even more upset. And did I mention that when I had to reserve that third night just to try and get sleep before hitting the road I had to pay a higher rate for that subpar, toilet-running room? Oh, and they also lie in their hotel descriptions online. There is NOT free parking "nearby." You now have to pay to park in the hotel's parking lot (didn't have to last year), and any other parking in the area either belongs to other hotels and businesses or is...
Read moreWe love Tru Hotels! As Hilton Diamond members, we travel a lot and always stay at Hiltons. If Tru is in the area, its our first choice because they are all new, modern and have no carpet in the rooms. I really appreciate the hot coffee in the lobby and the ice buckets by the ice machine. There is also a water fountain with filtered water to refill your own tumbler or water bottle. This visit to Chapel Hill was a bit disappointing. Our first room reeked of mold. It was the larger room on the 4th floor. i have asthma so we went downstairs promptly and asked for another room. So maybe a roof leak or an a/c problem. The room on the second floor had no issues, it was just a bit smaller. The beds and bedding are so comfortable, we all slept very well. The room temp remained consistently cool. We did not wake up hot at all during the night. I love going downsrairs for breakfast because no materr which Tru we go to there are always plenty of staff at breakfast time and they walk around and chat with the customers. This location is no exception. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The food line, coffee station and the tables were a bit messy after the morning rush of people in town for the college football games. All surfaces needed wiping down. As soon as I asked an employee to take care of that, she hopped on it. Of course the pancake machine is an interest to everyone one and the pancakes are delicious. I never could eat waffles at those hotels with the self service waffle irons because the waffle mix makes me very sick but the pancake mix at Tru Hotels is made with yogurt and it doesn’t upset my tummy. Otherwise, the lobby was very clean and someone was mopping and vacuuming as so as the breakfast crowd dispersed. Unfortunately, so much food and drinks have been spilled on the cushions of the swing chairs that they are very unsightly and need to be professionally cleaned...
Read moreTru by Hilton Chapel Hill offers a convenient location to both Chapel Hill and Durham located about a 20 minute drive from the RDU airport. The hotel decor is consistent with Hilton's Tru brand. The hotel staff is very courteous and attempts to resolve problems.
The lobby area offers games and activities for all with Marvel Movie Monday nights, Wednesday Game Night, and Karaoke Friday night all from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. These events include some refreshments. In the mornings breakfast included in the fare is offered which includes juices, cereals, pancakes, egg station, bagels, and coffees, teas, hot chocolate. A small gym is located off the lobby area. A small business center is in the lobby along with various snack food offerings for pay.
The downside of this property is the extreme lack of water pressure in the bathroom sinks. We were in room 303 and the staff offered to move us to 304, but as the videos show the water is a slow trickle. I even checked the public lobby restroom sink and found the same trickle. Additionally, the hot water in the shower is not hot and I am suspecting my tepid showers were because the hot water tanks are nor sufficient to serve the hotel.
If you don't mind low water pressure (one staff person suggested they made need to replace or clean the faucet aerator), a tepid shower at any hour, and you want a good location you might consider Tru by Hilton Chapel Hill North Carolina.
Oh, beginning March 2025 they will be charging for parking according to signage in the lobby.
UPDATE: I removed the faucet aerator and viola there is water. Question: Why can't housekeeping report such issues to be resolved before a guest checks...
