It was my first Christmas away from home, especially in a hotel, and I didn't know what expect. The staff was very friendly and helpful at the downstairs desk, answered all the questions that my family had for the duration of our stay. The hotel room was very generous in size (two queen beds!) and the beds were more than cozy. The only thing I didnt like about them was that there was a little yellow stain at the foot of one of them, but it was okay because it wasnt that big of a deal to us, but I hoped they cleaned it for the people who stay after us, as they may not be so as understanding. In our room, I loved the sliding door for both the bathroom and the closet, and the TV was centered perfectly. I also appreciated how the WiFi password was located on the outside of the holder with your keys in it, rather than having to wait until you get into your room and having to play "scavenger hunt" to find it. I love how their little desks is one you can move around on wheels and that it's made to accomadate and take up as little room as possible. The bathroom was neat, fresh towels and a pretty shower. However, in regards the bathroom, I found myself not liking the overall the way the shower was designed. I love the fact that its glass and it was a door to enter and close versus the troubles that come with a shower curtain. However, because the way the door is made (it opens the way you open a microwave door), when you go in to turn it on, the shower head is angled in a way that, unless youre already inside with the door closed, somethe water will end up on the bathroom floor (but thank goodness for the surplus of towels to help combat that). I just wished there was a way I could adjust the temperature that doesnt result in me suffering the blistering heat/cold until I get it to my liking or causing a flood on the bathroom until i do so. I enjoyed the TV in our room! As someone who still appreciates cable/network TV, it was nice to just randomely flip through the generous channels the Hotel offered, especially after a long day out and I want to wind down with some effortless, mind numbing TV. The housekeeping people were wonderful when we interacted with them the times we were there as they changed the towels. However, I didn't appreciate the one day where they knocked on our door at 9am and we asked them to come back later, came back and knocked 10 minutes later. After the second time, we place the do not disturb sign out so they wouldnt disturb us further, only for them to knock an hour later WITH the sign outside. All in all, it was a great stay, I loved my time I spent there. I wished they had a complimentary breakfast like some hotels do, it felt like paying for breakfast and having it brought to you was an unnessecary way to milk people for their money (And on top of that, their "breakfast" items were only availble for a two hour window, which seemed very inconvienent). Also, it's important to note that this hotel doesn't enforce the mask mandate not only on their guests, but their employees as well, so if you wouldn't feel safe or comfortable interacting with maskless (but otherwise lovely) employees and potentially other hotel guests, this will not be the...
Read moreI reserved my hotel room with a credit card & the payment was non-refundable if canceled. When I checked in the afternoon of the 16th, I said I wanted to pay with cash. I was told I could do that upon check-out on Sunday. On Sunday, the same lady was working the front desk. When I said I wanted to pay some of the charges with cash, I was told I couldn’t because of the reservation & my card had already been charged. When I told her I was told upon check-in I could pay with cash she said no & had to call a manager. The manager told her no. The question is why? I have paid with cash at other hotels when the room was reserved the same way with no issues; they reversed charges on the card. The attitude of this lady was not helpful or even polite.
Also at check-out, I told the front desk lady I had already complained Saturday evening & told the housekeeper about a leak that was somewhere because the floor of the hotel room was soaking wet from the end of the hallway the bathroom was on all the way to the far wall; the wall between the bed & wall was wet. By morning, the wet area extended to the end of the bed. Her response was she knew there was a leak; it leaked into the lobby. The tone was one of “yea, I know. So what? Get over it.”
I had also told Millie on Saturday evening (who was very apologetic & nice) the air conditioning sounded like it was trying to lift off when it came on; very loud. The phone system was also messed up because the entire time I was on the phone, I could hear the automated attendant telling me to hold. I understand the hotel was full; Millie said the only room available had a double bed which was not going to work for me & my son. The room was not properly cooling.
I have left messages on Monday, September 18th & again on Tuesday, September 19th. I have not received a call back as of September 23rd.
I truly hope you work with front desk staff on being more courteous & fully explaining when people can pay with cash or why they cannot. I also hope room 209 is...
Read moreThis is our favorite hotel in the Charlottesville area. The rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, and the staff is great. This visit was no exception. The reason for the negative review title is two-fold:
There was a problem with the door. When the magnetic pass-key was inserted, both the green and red LEDs lit up together and there was an audible click. After returning to the front desk TWICE, I tried, using the third pass-key to put my shoulder to the door when the red and green LEDs lit up, and it opened. I called the front desk to report that we got in, but that both LEDs lit up as with the previous two pass-keys. The front desk receptionist said she'd report it to maintenance in the morning to check out. Once inside, we used the dead-bolt and the secondary, sliding lock for security, but I was not confident of door security when we were not in the room. Nothing changed with the door during our stay. We never experience this problem before.
The speed of the Wi-Fi connection was snail-like. I haven't experienced anything this lethargic since we had our old Verizon DSL connection at home years ago, before FiOS came to our neighborhood. I measured the Internet speed in our room at just under 1 Megabit per second (0.97) on download and about 0.25 Megabits per second on upload (I'm a retired computer scientist). Even the older 802.11g Wi-Fi routers should provide up to 54 Megabits per second. We didn't even come close. With the hotel room's speed, or lack thereof, we could not stream any video programming reliably with our notebook computer and were restricted to on-air TV programming. Even getting our e-mail was painfully slow. Bummer! Again, we have not experienced such poor performance in the past.
That said, the Holiday Inn Charlottesville-Monticello is still our go-to hotel when visiting our daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. We'll just write this off as a random,...
