I found this hotel when I was planning our trip from Clovis, CA, back up through Jedediah Smith State Park and onward to Portland, OR.
Another reviewer said a lot of the things I felt about this hotel. He stayed in the same room we did. The Jack and Jill bathroom was fine for my party of six - we had four kids sharing two queen beds in the separate bedroom, and me and my husband stayed in the main room with one queen bed.
We were in the room closest to the freeway, but we travel with a fan so that helped cover the noise.
There were a lot of things about the hotel that were extremely outdated, but could proved to be really unique and fun with updates! Curly Redwood, you won't lose the unique factor if you implement more updates! The furniture is old and uncomfortable. The mattress was wonky and I slept very badly on it. There's no AC. Outlets were limited. Only one of the two doors leading into the bathroom had a lock, so people could easily walk in when someone else was in there. There was no back up toilet paper in the room, and so once it was gone we were stuck until we could ask for more in the morning/when the office was open again. The carpet had a really weird feel to it.
If the motel took as much care with the interior of the rooms as they do on the exterior (there are lovely flowering plants everywhere, the sidewalks are clean, and the common spaces are neat and trim), this hotel would move up by at least one star. Add breakfast options, and you might gain two more stars!
Honestly, there are very few h/motels that offer three queen beds in a single unit. When my family travels, we look for these particular rooms. I appreciate that...
Read moreFirst off, we were dupped by the reviews. These 4/5 or 5/5 star reviews are either fake or we must have gotten one of the worst rooms there. The room I booked was supposed to be a queen. It was not. Just because you throw a queen blanket on it doesn't make it a queen. There was no fan in the bathroom and it got very hot in there after my tub/shower combo (you can't soak). The walls are paper thin so I could hear neighbors "enjoying" their squeaky, small bed. The towels were more like rags. The T-shirt I'd worn 2 days in a row while on the road was whiter and smelled better. The TV had to have been 19"at the most but I didn't bring a ruler or anything just had to sit almost directly in front of it. No AC (with all that wood you'd think?), bed was most uncomfortable I've slept in since beginning my vacation a week ago, carpets were dirty, deadbolt and chain were almost rusted thru, and as soon as we walked into our room the phone rang. It was the front desk asking me to move my car because I was in a spot that was already rented out (ghost town at that time anyways). I told him I was just carrying my bags up and would be down in a min to move it since my parking spot was along a curb in the center of the parking lot for some reason. I was one out of 2 that had to park like that. I actually thought about sleeping in my car vs the room. After all I paid for it. But lastly the blasting horn from the nearby harbor kept me awake anywhere I tried to sleep that night. I don't think this place was "unique" in a good way. It's rundown, uncomfortable, and if you believe the good reviews well best of luck to you. You might as well stand over a toilet and flush...
Read moreLast year I ate at a seafood place across the street from this hotel and thought it was an interesting place so this year we chose to stay here on our annual 420 West Coast Tour. (Yes, we call it that in the family calendar) It is a very reasonably priced hotel but it is old and has had a limited amount of upgrades. The hotel was built in 1957 and the redwood you see everywhere inside and out is from a single redwood tree. The unique aspect of the hotel is the 65-year-old wood and to keep this wood it seems some concessions have been made in upgrades. The room we stayed in smelled of mildew and the furniture looked like it was from the 60s or 70s. The windows had all been recently replaced and they looked and worked great. I doubt the bathroom was original but it was very old and a little prison like. Water was hot and we took long showers. The room we stayed in had a Jack and Jill bathroom and for those of you who do not know what that is, it is a bathroom with two doors. Personally I feel Jack and Jill bathrooms were made by the devil but I suspect that only my large two bedroom three bed room had that bathroom layout at the hotel. Our room was at the end of the hotel near the highway so trucks could be heard but it wasn't ridiculous.
The wood is truly amazing and with a few upgrades this place would be a really fun place the stay. I imagine they are trying to keep that kitsch value of the curly maple wood and that prevents them from doing a tremendous amount to improve the property without spending more than it would be worth. The proprietor appears to live...
