I used 40,000 points to book this stay. We were staying for the Redwoods. The location is fine, but the quality of the room itself was a little bit of a miss, and there are some issues around this area/town with mental illness it seems. We felt safe inside the room though, and it has 2 locks. MAKE SURE YOU PULL THE DOOR SHUT, it closes on its own, but gets stuck so you have to pull it shut when leaving or the lock won't engage . Our room was able to be pushed open, thankfully we only went to breakfast so it was short.
The front desk staff was wonderful, and everyone we talked to here in Crescent City was amazing as humans. So the staff and service get 5 star. The breakfast was pretty good for a quality inn, I enjoyed the biscuits and gravy. The eggs were meh, but they are the same at other quality in properties. The keycard was white and generic. Worked though so not really bothered by it.
I felt the amount of points I spent to stay here was a bit expensive, and I booked fairly far in advance. 20k a night is average for this place, which equates to about 200$ a night if you are buying/ converting choice points. I feel it should be 15k a night. If it was that amount it would be reviewed much higher as I felt that 150$ a night would be very fair for what this place is. That would be more reasonable in my opinion. I have stayed at Cambria hotels (higher tier, not luxury but more upscale) for the same amount of points at 20k a night.
I rated it this way because the location itself can't really do anything about the unsafe behaviour of people not related to the property. There is a review that mentions people going through the Travelodge dumpsters. This is true as we seen it when coming back from Walmart. The smoking area had mentally unwell people sleeping on the bench there when we returned a different night, which you have to walk past to go to the room.
It seems this place has recently been remodeled, but the work is a bit shoddy it seems. We had a king bed room. The fridge rubbed against the wall every time it opened, there was plastic packaging left on some of the moulding before it was installed on the wall. The furniture inside was very new and you can tell, which was appreciated. The microwave is jank, I played with the temperature/ heat setting on it and it changed nothing. There is cutlery, knives and forks and oven mitts and stuff, even a couple measuring devices so that allowed us to cook a meal which I appreciated since the dining options in town are limited. The shower situation is a bit strange, and the curtain rod fell down. So there was that.
I found the sleep comfortable, but every morning there were like 5-6 flies which not sure how they got in with everything shut. The door has a pretty big crack at the bottom, so might be that but not sure and can't say for certain.
In summary, this place met our needs, but it felt expensive for what it was. The work done on the rooms and building could use a little more care. The staff were wonderful, so I thought I would shout them out 10/10. Breakfast was decent, maybe a smidge better than other quality inns, and it was kept well stocked. They had yoghurt, hot sauce, sausages, eggs, muffins, cream cheese, apple juice, orange juice. And other small items to...
Read moreIf zero was an option I would give this location zero stars. Borderline traumatizing experience, awful service, disgusting room, unkept grounds, a minimum of 4 code violations. We reserved a downstairs rooms, as my partner is disabled and they have no elevator or ramp to accommodate the other-abled. They gave us upstairs. I asked for a downstairs in person, they said they were full, "oh well", I said we will find other accommodations. Like magic they found another room downstairs that happened to be just what we were looking for. Upon entering the room we were met with a gust of the strongest bleach chemical stink you can imagine causing intermediate headache. Next we were greeted with a list of added expenses if anything was to go missing, which clued is in as to what kind of clientele they're accustom to. I turned on the air conditioner and had the door open to vent it out. As I walked around the bed I slipped in a puddle of who knows what, the slide was cut short by garbage on the floor. There were dead bugs crushed on the wall, mold and mildew in every corner and crevice, everything was rusted covered in dust and there was pubic hair on the nightstand, as I sat on the bed the fitted sheet popped off the corner, there was no mattress cover, the mattress was stained and filthy, the door had been kicked in a few times, they crudely screwed a piece of wood onto the door and added a lock to it, every inch of this room felt disgusting, every wall and piece of furniture had damage cracks chips and peeling paint, we left immediately to find other accommodations, we were in the room a grand total of 10 minutes. The manager working said that he would give us a full refund and apologized, he said that it would take a few days to post, it never did so we called in, he refused to give us a refund as we had cancelled mid-stay, we reminded him of the situation, and he still refused, we called Choice Hotels, they said he reported us as having stayed the duration and there was nothing they could do. 20 years of being a loyal customer and that's what we got. Luckily I took pictures of everything, I didn't want to be blamed for a thing or charged extra for...
