I stayed in this hotel for six days for my conference at UC Davis. I am thoroughly impressed with the stay. I generally stay at the Hilton portfolio of hotels, but after staying here, I believe I have to start to consider the Ascend Collection more seriously.
Pros: a) Location: It is 5 minutes walk from the UC Davis Welcome Center, the Stadium, the museum, and the Conference Center, and most of the departments. It is one block from most of the restaurants in the 2nd and 3rd Street of Davis, and 10 minutes walk from the Amtrak train station.
b) Quality of room: The room (101) was excellent. It was well appointed with modern amneties, refrigerator, microwave, modern lighting, iron-board and iron, and Keurig coffee machine. The room had large windows with ample view and light. The look and feel of the room was very modern, and the red-white theme was satisfying and comforting. The AC was quiet and efficient. The room had full view of the roads, Yet, the room was quiet.
c) The quality of the cosmetics: Was excellent as well. The room also had two bathrobes and two pairs of sandals for guests.
d) The staff behavior was at par best. They helped me with laundry services, parking of my vehicle (which was free) and choosing restaurants. They even allowed me an early check-in. Overall, very satisfied.
e) Cleanliness: Overall cleanliness of the room and washrooms was excellent.
The cons: a) I believe that the quality of breakfast can be improved. For the six days I was staying there, the breakfast items were boringly the same, they were not the best quality. Also not too many choices. The oatmeal is very watery, while the sausages were very oily. There were no whole fruit options.
b) The look and feel of the breakfast room is mediocre and looks very cheap. It is not welcoming. The first thing one notices is the dirty plates bin (which is not the most welcoming scene on entrance). There is also a stench of old food. This room can be renovated, with welcoming posters and a welcoming layout. I only had breakfast twice, and...
Read morenever thought I’d say this, but a boutique hotel — the Aggie Inn — gave me more comfort, dignity, and support than the entire institution of UC Davis ever did.
Let’s be real: UC Davis is a bloated, bureaucratic disappointment. For a school that charges insane tuition and hides behind flashy “rankings,” it’s astonishing how little it offers in return. Campus services? Slow and rude. Classes? Overcrowded and soulless. Support? Nonexistent unless you beg for it. And let’s not even start on the campus stores — pure money-grabbing scams dressed up as “student resources.” The whole place feels like it was designed to exploit students, not educate them.
Now contrast that with the Aggie Inn — a hotel, mind you — which actually delivered what it promised. Clean rooms. Helpful staff. Respectful treatment. A quiet environment. Real service. You walk in and they actually care about your experience — imagine that.
UC Davis couldn’t manage a housing office properly, yet the Aggie Inn makes every check-in smooth. UC Davis overcharges for garbage meals and housing, while Aggie Inn provides value, comfort, and peace. UC Davis treats you like a number. Aggie Inn treats you like a person.
Here’s the truth: I’ve had more meaningful, intelligent, and respectful experiences inside a hotel lobby than I did in an entire year at UC Davis.
If you’re a high-achieving student who expects real standards, real challenge, and real support — don’t come here. UC Davis is where ambition goes to die, buried under red tape, low expectations, and a fake “inclusive” culture that masks total mediocrity. They’ll smile while they waste your time, your money, and your future.
So yeah — if you’re ever in Davis, skip the school. Book a night at the Aggie Inn. It’s smarter, cleaner, and far more honest than anything happening across the street...
Read moreJust had great 3 day stay in a king cottage at the Aggie Inn while in Davis to visit family. We always book a cottage because it's nice having the extra space - especially for 3 adults, and a bedroom that is separated by French doors from the living area. The rooms have a microwave, kuerig coffee maker and refrigerator, two TVs and a queen size foldout couch in the living area. Plus, the bedroom and living area each have their own climate control thermostats. The bathrooms are modern with the sink and large vanity separate from the toilet and shower. |We've tried other hotels and even VRBOs in Davis, but the Aggie is by far our favorite. Pretty much all of downtown is within walking distance and there is direct access to the UC Davis Arboretum Trail right across the street, which I highly recommend. |Tips:|The French doors in our cottage had sheer curtains covering the glass (not sure if they all do), so I always bring a sheet to hang over the doors as light from the night owl on the foldout couch tends to keep me awake.|I also bring a sleeping bag or heavy blanket (I'm sure you could get extra blankets from the staff) to lay on the foldout mattress which makes it more comfortable. I've yet to encounter a foldout in any hotel that was truly comfortable; that's just how they are.|The kitchenette cottage while very nice, especially if you want to save money by preparing your own food, has an older style bathroom as opposed to the mini fridge cottages which have more modern bathrooms with a large vanity and sink separate from the shower and toilet. Honestly you can't go wrong...
