My extended stay of 22 nights at a hotel conveniently located close to downtown Dearborn was a journey of highs and lows. The hotel's proximity to the city's facilities and stores was a major draw for me, as was the relative peace compared to other more crowded and less refined options in the area. The hotel radiates a certain elegance and charm, and I was grateful for the absence of disruptive guests that can often detract from the experience.
The staff presented a mixed bag of interactions. On the positive side, I want to acknowledge Valencia and the African-American lady frequently at the front desk for their warmth and professionalism. The waitresses at the restaurant consistently treated me with kindness, and a helpful gentleman with white dark hair went out of his way to ensure I had a microwave in my room, as they removed all microwaves from the floors.
However, the negative experiences I encountered cannot be ignored. The hotel's rooms are a testament to neglect in embracing modern necessities; the lack of USB ports and a sufficient number of power outlets was a significant inconvenience. The design of the lamp outlets was particularly frustrating, barely accommodating a square charger.
Housekeeping services were below par. It was disappointing to find my desk, which I heavily relied on for work, not properly wiped down. The situation necessitated that I clean it myself, which is certainly not what I expected from a hotel stay.
My experiences with some of the hotel staff were particularly disheartening. The incident on the night of December 16th, when I found myself locked out of the hotel at 1:30 am, was especially distressing. The staff member, a gentleman with gray blonde hair, offered no assistance other than pointing vaguely from a distance. His reluctance to approach and explain the situation left me feeling unsafe and frustrated as I wandered in search of an entry point. It was only after noticing other guests using a card reader by the spinning door that I was able to gain access, while the staff member stood by, offering a belated explanation that came across as smug rather than helpful.
Moreover, the confusion regarding my Platinum status added to my displeasure. After achieving this level of membership on December 16th, I was entitled to certain perks, including complimentary breakfast. With the lounge room unavailable, I had to request a breakfast pass daily, which should have been a straightforward process. Unfortunately, the hotel's system failed to reflect my updated status, leading to a series of uncomfortable confrontations. Some staff, including a white blonde-haired lady and another African-American gentleman, treated me with suspicion and went so far as to demand my driver's license, which was both insulting and embarrassing given my lengthy and planned future stays.
In summary, the hotel has the potential to be a jewel in Dearborn, but it is currently tarnished by dated facilities and inconsistent customer service. Read moreThe former Ritz Carlton in Dearborn, now known as the Henry is a beautiful property. It wows you as soon as you walk in. The beautiful lobby, lounge and restaurant grab your attention right away.
The hallways are lined with gorgeous artwork. Paintings, sculptures etc. The rooms are quite nice as well. We had a King bedroom with distant views of downtown Detroit. The rooms feature a huge TV of course, a chair, desk and long bed. The bathroom shower is very nice, the tile is great. There are some out of date easy fixes that they ignore however, such as the dated, cracked light switches.
Hot tub and pool area are absolutely fantastic as well. One of the nicer pools around. The hot tub was a hit. The colored lighting was a nice touch. The pool was too cold but the hot tub made up for it. The hot tub does need a good cleaning though.
The rest: The gym has tons of machines, ellipticals, bikes, treadmills, weights, etc. Parking is plentiful and free, so that's great. Two waters are included in the room but of course you can get more from the housekeeping. The lotions and soaps are very good as well.
My biggest issue which made this place lose a star is the communication before I arrived. When I booked, I was able to use a free night and wanted to book a paid night as well. The Marriott app would only let me book them separately, not together. I figured it wouldn't be a problem.
When I started chatting with them in the Marriott app two days before my arrival, the front desk rep said he couldn't guarantee I'd get the same room both nights. To me that sounds like a busy hotel then, both nights.
To put it in context, this hotel is 300 rooms or so. When I arrived, on Saturday, it was decently busy. The next day though, maybe 30 cars in the parking lot. Now we didn't have a fancy room since they said no upgrades were available 🤔, so how could this rep not guarantee our rooms would be together. It made zero sense to me whatsoever.
A day later after me contemplating cancelling the second night, I got a message that they combined the nights together for me. So the unnecessary stress they put me through with no guarantee of the same room, in hindsight was just a big pain. Especially at $275 USD/night.
Still a great property, they just need to spruce up their customer service for some staff. Unsure if we'd stay here again.
