My sister and I traveled to Yorktown last month for a little sister-getaway. Unfortunately, extreme heat put a damper on the few days there so, it was good to have a nice room to which we could retreat. When we first arrived, we were a bit dis- appointed with the room WE had actually requested (on a hill behind the main building but with a gorgeous panoramic view.) Our disappointment came from the fact that the room had not been fully renovated (the owner is in the process of doing so) and we just didn't feel comfortable due to the old soiled carpet, upholstery, and stains in the ceiling as well as a "mildewy" odor. This is not to bad mouth the condition of the room OR the hotel staff, but to point out that the updating of an old and historic hotel was still in the process. Upon returning to the front desk to share our concerns, a young man named Kevin, bent over backwards to make things right. He personally escorted us to a refurbished room in the main building. We were pleased with the updates and a large picture window view of the York River! Kevin became our "go-to" person. He was always pleasant, kind, and helpful - even to the point of coaching us as to what we should do when the local trolley did not return to pick us up at the Revolutionary Museum and we had no way back as the trolley had broken down (no one's fault). Unfortunately, the trolley transport system had been unable to get a message out as to what was going on. (They were very compassionate and apologetic when they called me back the next day to make sure we were ok.) Sadly, though, the two employees I approached at the museum were unconcerned as they were in the process of closing up to go home. We needed a compassionate voice in that moment and God used Kevin as that voice! Although it sounds frivolous, It was a great concern for two "older" women stranded in a heat index of 111° that day without a ride. Kevin's compassion over the phone greatly encouraged us until we were able to get a ride (with a stranger) young woman who was leaving work for the day - truly an angel to the rescue with a kind and courageous heart. Thank YOU, Kevin for being a great support system and for staying the course as we tried to figure out what to do short of walking along an overgrown highway shoulder back to the hotel which would have worked out fine had we been 30 years younger. 😊 We had the privilege of meeting the owner of the hotel as we were leaving to return home. He was kind and happy to hear that we enjoyed our stay. He seems to get a bit of flack from some reviews, but I applaude him for taking on this amazing project. While it truly is a work in progress, he is doing a good thing with this beautiful old hotel that evidently has needed a good deal of love for a very long time and now in a very inflated economy which hinders most projects these days. Thank you, sir, for making a difference! And thank you, Kevin at the front desk, for your fine southern hospitality! 😊 Again, we enjoyed our visit -- nothing like...
Read moreI stayed here once before for the view, wasn't too bad for a basic room, just outdated and a little musty but nothing we couldn't handle. I decided to book the jacuzzi room, this is a 350$ room for one night. We spent a long day out so we were exhausted come night time. The hallway did have this horrendous smell of definitely black mold and a mix of like weed? Like it was pungent, I could smell it on my clothes when I woke up the next morning. So, we had a toilet that didn't work, there was mold around the caulking of the jacuzzi, mold in the bathroom, there was hair in the shower from the previous person, there was what seemed to be red lip stick stains I believe on one of the pillow cases. I was coughing and wheezing, which definitely is a black mold symptom. Also a guest actually walked right into our room at like 7:30am ish waking me up, and it definitely freaked me out. That was odd. I was looking at the reviews on yelp and other places and I was nervous seeing how upset the owner gets that I actually got scared to say anything and didn't want to have an uncomfortable altercation on my vacation. No refunds and seeing that other people who complained about the same things not much was done. I guess there isn't much you can do or could have done, It was either stick it out and go to another bad smelling room, or lose out on 350. That is so expensive for one night, As soon as I checked out I did call to let them know, but the lady on the phone just basically said "Tell the front desk in person" Which I know I should have done, but between the exhaustion and needing rest and having to get up early and go and us being nervous the owner would be rude towards us (based on his feedback to people saying anything negative)We just wanted to go ASAP when morning came. Considering how nonchalant she was and had a little bit of an attitude when I told her about the room, I think we made the right decision and avoided an uncomfortable situation for us on vacation. Which is so unfortunate because she was nice to me a few weeks ago the first time I came, but upon hearing something negative the attitude does change. It was a loss of 350 for one night I...
Read moreI haven’t been to this motel in 8 years but only because life became challenging when my husband and I had a daughter born way too early. Now that she is doing well, we decided to come back to the area we love most and settle in a room for a few days back at our ole motel. I cannot believe the amount of work that has been put into this place! It’s amazing! While I stayed in an older section/not updated room, everything was still wonderful! The view from our room overlooks the water and is such a cozy, nestled little spot where bringing our belongings in was so easy!! The pool is BEAUTIFUL and is where we spent a lot of time. It’s clean and never overcrowded at once. The addition to the breakfast bar is exciting and we found ourselves nice and full never having to leave the area to eat for there are many lunch and dinner places in walking distance. Ryan, who works up front is absolutely the nicest young man, and the blonde woman(ugh I forget her name) is equally amazing. Both people helped us with something needed and answered any and all questions we may have had. The gentleman who tended the pool, we also saw him fixing things, was pleasant and kind too! Everyone is so nice and accommodating! While here, we ran into TWO sets of our friends from various counties hours away and couldn’t stop talking about what a great place this was. I saw some mention bugs being an issue but I never saw any bugs and everything was clean. However, this is an older place, on the water, and surrounded by greenery, so if you see a bug, I mean geez, you signed up for it. Again, I never saw any. We love everything they have done to begin fixing this place up and while I know renovations can take awhile and come with a hefty price tag, the owners of this place are on top of it through and through! We plan to come back again next summer, but we will stay longer and wish we could’ve this go round. Honestly, I’ll ask for the same room again if it’s available and again, it’s not a renovated one; that’s how much I still loved it! Thank you to all of the staff for making our short trip...
