Seriously the freshest sushi in Hampton Roads. The owner was an engineer for a large company that sent him over seas to Japan. While in Japan he ate a lot of sushi and learned how to select the freshest fish. He learned from top sushi chefs. It really shows because even though he has many talents, he loves making sushi for people and his small intimate restaurant is perfect. Every time we go, the owners always offer free samples and they make us feel like we are home. No other sushi place compares to this one. A word of advice to those who think friend sushi is sushi, it isn't. This is real authentic sushi and sashimi. They also have some cooked Korean food on their menu but no fried sushi. 🍣 Enjoy the experience.

Wonderful Japanese style eatery (not because it’s sushi but how you sit at the bar, order, get your food). Not big so best for a date night or take out for larger orders. But soooooo fresh. Rice, fish, everything was the best we’ve had in a long time. Pay attention to the hours! Early March was closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, open Wednesday on. The Chef is a great guy too. Highly recommend going at least once during your stay. Try the Japanese sodas too. You won’t get a cavity like our homegrown drinks.

Came through Umi Sushi solo while I was out in Yorktown visiting from Cali. Real talk — this spot blew me away. The fish? Straight melt-in-your-mouth status. Hella fresh, clean cuts, you can tell they don’t cut corners. That quality hit different. The owner showed mad love too. Super chill dude, made me feel like I was at home even though I was just grabbing takeout. That energy you don’t get everywhere. If you’re ever out here, don’t sleep on this spot. I’ll for sure be back next time I’m in town.

I walked into Umi Sushi today and I said hello in a nice warm tone like I always do when entering an establishment. My daughter and husband walked in a few seconds later and also said hello pleasantly. The woman (who looked like she may have been an owner or sushi chef) behind the plexiglass stared in my face and said absolutely nothing. She looked at my husband in a smug manner and said absolutely nothing. She did not wave or nod or smile at all. She looked annoyed and then went on to duck down behind the counter and stayed down there for at least eight seconds. I'm not sure how long she stayed down there because my family and I left. Quite a disappointment as I live only minutes away and eat sushi often. My family and I won't...

Umi Sushi is a small establishment with I assume the owner making your dishes. He is very nice and accommodating to your curiosity. He let us try our first lychee and melon soda…and they were delicious that we grabbed some to take home. Our order was kept simple: spicy tuna, salmon, California rolls and shrimp tempura. Everything tasted fresh, even down to the veggies! His eel sauce had a kick to it, which I appreciated because I do not like the overpowering sweetness of other versions of eel sauce. Bringing our leftovers/to go order home, our very picky daughter ate all the California rolls stating they were the best she has had! Will definitely be making this restaurant a staple in...
