We’ve visited the Packwood RV Park campground twice now and enjoyed our visit both times. It’s an older campground but is clean and well maintained. You can tell that the staff cares about the place and works hard to keep it clean and in good repair for guests. On this visit we noticed that they are building a new office and managers living space as well as adding some small cabins for guests to stay in.
On both of our visits, we arrived on a whim without having a reservation. The staff was friendly and accommodating both times, and found a spot for us. They do prefer reservations though. All of the RV sites have full hookups. There are bathrooms, showers and laundry facilities, which were clean, smelled fresh and were in good repair. The driveways are well maintained gravel, but the RV sites are all nice grass. This is a great feature in our book and we really enjoy being able to sit outside without shoes and not track a bunch of dirt or gravel into the rig. They have working wifi. There isn’t enough speed to stream, but there is plenty to check email or do some basic web surfing. If I remember right, it was about 1.2 gig both up and down. We run on Verizon service and there are 5 bars of very fast LTE in town. Dogs are allowed but the manager also said they don’t allow some breeds. I think she said Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Dobermans.
We really like Packwood. It’s a tiny little town and has a chill friendly vibe. It’s got all the basics that you would need for camping or RVing. We usually stay there when we are exploring Mt. Rainier National Park and all the campgrounds are full. There is a public library right next door to the RV park, and there is a public park with shade, picnic tables and lots of space to walk the dog.
Because Packwood is all centered around Hwy 12, which runs straight through it, a little bit of road noise is normal just about everywhere in town. We’ve always slept well here though as the road noise is minimal and quiets considerably when it gets late.
Elk seem to like it in town and it’s not unusual to see them roaming around town, including ambling through the RV Park.
We look forward to our next stay at this park and...
Read moreTurned up later than planned in Packwood due to a fire detour on the PCT, with everywhere booked out and night upon us we asked a local in the store where we could stay ''try the RV park across the road, they have camping sites". It being late there was an after hours honesty system in place, we filled out our form, paid our money and put it in the envelope as instructed. The courtesy paper maps of the site were useful, we found the camping spot relatively easily despite the dark , set up our tents and went to sleep after a long, smokey day.
I was woken up by a man with his large dog (on a chain) around 630am. He yelled at us and asked if we could read whilst looming over our two tents. "This is private property" he stated on repeat. "You aren't welcome here". Despite trying to explain that we had turned up late and paid for the night as instructed in the afterhours reception he did not want to hear it. We calmly gave him our names so he could check the box where we put our envelopes. This was to no avail, we were forcably removed immediately. A large black truck with blacked out windows pulled up as we were hurridly packing our tents, unsure what we had done wrong as paying customers.
In three months in the US this was the worst treatment I have experienced. As a paying customer I was disgusted by the treatment and the attitude. Unsure of whether the dog was just for show or intended as a threat we didn't dare ask for our money back, we simply got a grunt explanation as we were leaving 'pct hikers are not welcome here, you are trespassing, you've done a lot of damage'.

Read more***BEWARE PCT HIKERSWe didn't stay here since I had called the week before and was told I was not welcome because I was meeting my husband and a friend who were hiking the PCT. The owner does not allow anyone who hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail but he sure does advertise it on his webpage (Seems a bit hypocritical). We got a hotel instead and were very happy with our decision. In any case, we met a couple of the hikers that stayed last night and were awoken this morning (around 0730) by the sounds of someone yelling, "this is private property! You need to get out of here! You're not welcome!" The hikers were confused since they paid their money in the drop box and used the provided map to find a camp site They were not even offered some of their money back for being thrown out so early for absolutely no reason except this guy hates hikers. These were nice young men who didn't want any trouble so just left. We gave a ride to the next phase of their epic adventure and we wish them both the best...Happy...
