I'm writing this review as someone who lived in Grand Rapids for ~8 years and worked one block away from where this hotel is located, so I’m very familiar with the area and many of the other hotel options. Overall, I would not stay here again unless I had earplugs and the price significantly decreased.
Pros: -Contactless check-in. Note that this is not a traditional hotel and functions more like an airbnb and there is no one on site should you need anything. I was emailed very detailed instructions 24 hours before check-in and the actual code to get in the building and room was available at the time of check-in. -Great location that I actually prefer over the hotels next to the river -Room decor is fun and modern with nice finishes - the remote-controlled blackout blinds were perfect
Cons: -Street noise is awful! I read all the reviews and can't believe no one mentioned this issue. The rooms are all in the basement, but have huge windows because there's a stairwell just outside that leads up to the street (though people off the street can't just go down there). The walls are brick, but the windows must be paper thin because we could hear anyone walking and talking on the sidewalk and every vehicle that drove down the street. There were also a shocking amount of cars that were ridiculously loud, constantly revving their engines and speeding away - the streets are not even set up for that type of driving, but it happened all 3 days we were there and at all hours, so perhaps it was mainly a nearby resident. Despite using a white noise app, I was woken up probably every 20-30 minutes both nights. I think earplugs would have been the only thing to drown it out, but unfortunately I didn't have any. -I couldn't hear any room noise from the adjacent rooms, but while in the bathroom you could hear when someone else was in their bathroom. You could also very clearly whoever lives upstairs. -I think this boutique hotel is definitely overpriced - it should not be the same price as other actual hotels with on-site staff, restaurants, attached parking, etc. and with the sound issues, I'm not really sure how they justify it -Like most hotels, no fan and not enough hooks in the bathroom! There appeared to be a vent of some sort on the bathroom ceiling but no actual fan switch. Hooks are such an easy addition and should be added for future guests!
Other: -I knew exactly what to expect as far as parking goes, so that did not bother me at all. We parked at the Monroe Center structure and it's a very short walk. -I can't really blame the hotel for this, but someone tried to get into our room for a solid 5 minutes at 2:30am. I assume they were drunk, but the fact that there aren't room numbers and instead names that started with C (we stayed in "create"), I can see how that might be a bit confusing and could have potentially...

Your experience at this hotel all depends on whether you plan on reading or not! This is my first experience and I say that many, many hotels that there is no staff whatsoever! Everything is done through text message and email period this can be very frustrating if you're the type of person who likes to talk to a front desk staff to ask for extra things like towels or ask general questions about the hotel period The only reason I chose this place is because the prices were a lot less than allowed. The other places around period you do have to realize though. That parking is not included, so who knows if you Add the amount of parking. That you are paying and the fact that they don't serve breakfast.
So I had this huge debacle when I got there. Because I'm expecting to walk up to a hotel lobby. And here I am on the street corner. Looking around at this building that looks a lot like a prison! I couldn't get in either. Also like a present! I was so frustrated and I had called the customer service to try to help out. They sent you a lot of instructions. And I've said a lot of hotels, but I've never had to read through the entire email. As far as checking in period usually it's just some general information, but with this hotel. If you don't read through all of it, you won't be able to check in at all! Since there is no key to the room or anything like that, the only way to get in there is the content that they sent you and put in the Pasco to get into the building, it's really weird if you have never experienced this before!
Fortunately once I finally got in there. I found the amenities to be really, really nice! The room had a lot of flavor to it and style, and the location was just wonderful, downtown Grand Rapids, so many amazing places to walk to food and entertainment! Me and my guests were absolutely happy with the room. Thankfully, she didn't have to worry about it. Because I had to do all the leg work. As far as getting it all set up. Although I didn't call her to event and tell her how flustered. It was trying to get into this hotel period Overall, I have to give this place a 4 stars. I'd like to give it 5 stars. But I'm just not using not dealing with any humans at all period I guess the...
Read moreI came into Grand Rapids to work the golf tournament for one day through Monday. On Sunday afternoon I had a request to work the week and seeing that the Finnley was close to many restaurants and bars, I booked for four nights. ||Two hours later my job cancelled on me. So I wrote the Finnley to cancel my reservation, expecting to be on the hook for one night. They wrote back and said that I could not cancel and I would be charged the four nights. ||After several emails they agreed to reimburse for two of the four nights and refund three days of parking. I wasn’t happy but decided to move on as this was my mistake. ||I checked in Monday night. The room was excellent and the bed was fantastic. So Tuesday morning I sent them an email saying that I would use the second night (that I paid for). I didn’t get a response. ||At 11:30a I get a text stating that I needed to check out as the cleaning crew was waiting. I requested a call back as I was getting frustrated with all the emails and texts. ||On the phone I stated my position that I had paid for two nights. The guy on the phone kept stating his position that I did not follow the cancellation policy and they made an exception and refunded two nights. We got nowhere and I was getting very upset to the point that I told him I would be out in five minutes and I was also fearing they would hit me with late fees. ||I travel throughout the US and Europe a lot. I pride myself on being a low maintenance traveler and respecting the wishes of the people in the hard business of running hotels and B & Bs. ||Unfortunately this is more of an air bb than a hotel. If your plans may change and you want some flexibility, I would not consider the Finnley. In addition, understand that it takes time to figure out where to park and the entry. If you are tired from a day of travel, don’t expect the the ease of checking into a typical hotel. On Tuesday morning I came back from breakfast and found the parking garage completely full and had to...
