Had a cup of coffee and breakfast here multiple times to get the day moving and loved every time.
No, like for realsees... if I'm in Grand Rapids again I know I want to be camping somewhere near this place, specifically.
Mad Cap Coffee down in Grand Rapids, Michigan, well, let me tell ya, it's somethin' else. You walk in, and that aroma, man, it grabs you like a long-lost friend. Sets the tone for the whole day, let me tell you.
Now, them breakfast treats, they're a real piece of work. Ain't just good, they're downright exquisite, and they look like somethin' out of a dream. You can tell they put love into every bite, and it's a breakfast I ain't gonna forget anytime soon.
But Mad Cap ain't your regular joint. No siree. They got this coffee flight thing goin' on. It's like a journey for your taste buds, an adventure right there on your plate. You taste different beans, each with its own story to tell. It's edumacational, a whole lotta fun, and it'll kickstart your day like nothin' else.
And I'll tell you, it ain't just the coffee and pastries that make Mad Cap special. I bumped into some fine folks who were fans of the Van Andel Scramble show with Billy Strings. We had a real hoot, sharin' stories and chewin' the fat about the show. It's them unexpected connections that make a place like this feel like home.
But the icing on the cake was when I got to snap some pictures with these newfound pals. We bonded over our love for the music, and it was a real treat, man. Mad Cap Coffee, it's more than just a coffee shop; it's a place where coffee, community, and memorable moments all come together, like a song that sticks with you for a...
Read moreI am learning to enjoy establishments with small menus as they may not offer a million kinds of "-Bear" named drinks but they go back to the simple bean and create wonderful libations.
Atmosphere:
As you walk under the well- kept aging architecture you step into a modern industrial café. The café feels modern and young. A place where you can go to meet people or be alone. They have plug ins for charging and they are one of the few kind businesses downtown that let you use their bathroom (which is floor to ceiling in graffiti art). If they are busy chances are you will more likely have to sit at a table with other people or on a chair beside them. If you are social, like me, you meet all kinds of interesting people. 5/5
Drinks:
The drinks are simple and delicious. If there was a "golden age" of coffee where the art form was upheld by generations of baristas, this would be their refuge. They make real espresso which I add a bit of liquid sugar to and sip, the crèma is good, but still maybe a 4/5. Coffee is drip coffee and deliciously simple. Café Miel is delicious and my favorite "fun" drink ( I cant make it at home).4.5/5
Staff:
Staff do not err on the side of overly friendly. Their personas seem to match the functional, industrial café which they represent. I picture them as mad geniuses that can't be bothered to engage in pointless banter or play. They do seem to know a lot about coffee and have the patience to explain things to you if...

Coffee: in short, not as good as it can be. For connoisseurs; the expresso is acidic, which means they are grinding finer than it needs to be and so it’s taking more time to extract double dose. This results in a bit acidic product. The beans are good, they can rectify this very easily if they want to.
Service: it’s hit or miss. We were visiting the city and went 2 days in a row. First day phenomenal service, the barista at the counter suggested getting lox bagels from the shop next door and enjoy with their coffee. We did that and loved the combination.
Day 2: we did the same and the manager on the shift walks over and complains of pungent smells spoiling the “mood” of the place. Me and my 10yr old, promptly packed the bagels, finished our coffee and left within 5min of complain. Now in principle, either they should not allow outside food, even encourage it or they should be ok with basic food items smelling other than coffee. Was very weird, and they made us feel uncomfortable...
