To say this beautiful inn was underwhelming and a disappointment is an understatement. There are billed as a Select Registry property which is a classification where certain standards should be met. So where do I start? Decor and cleanliness: Overall the inn looks beautiful and our initial impression was very positive. See below under noteworthy details for more insight. Breakfast: Probably the worst I’ve experienced. Food- see below for detail Hospitality: this is where they fail the most. In fact it’s as if anything you ask they are PUT OUT! First indication was I get to breakfast at 9:30 (it goes till 10:00) and no silverware was left, no plates, no coffee cups and the fruit bowl was just a piece of pineapple left. After about 15 minutes I got up and rang a bell in the main hallway and someone came out from the office and went to the kitchen to tell that person to help me. She went back to her office and finally after another 10 minutes or so he appeared from the kitchen and I ordered the quiche. I also asked for utensils and plates to which the reply was a stone cold “I’m sorry, I’m really busy!” No show of genuine concern at all! WOW, ok!!! Next we get a text message at 9:00 am (the electronic communication is where they shine and I think it’s because they do not like to interact at all) asking if we’d like our room serviced to which my husband replied “yes”! At 3:00 room still wasn’t cleaned. Once again he heads into the main building and rings the bell and someone appears from the office and with zero concerns asks if he replied to the text and she said “ok, they just didn’t get to it yet!” At around 4:00 that same person who isn’t cleaning staff goes to our room carrying towels and she replaces towels, makes bed and that’s it. No other tidying up, hair was in bathtub exactly the way it was left etc. On day two we go to breakfast and the room was busy with all tables occupied so we decide to eat outside on the lovely patio where there are several tables and chairs with umbrellas. It had rained the night before. Once again no one is around to ask for any assistance and frankly they are bothered by any bell ringing requests so we had to get a bath towel from our room to wipe off the wet table and chairs and also assisted another couple with the same issue. We put up the umbrellas and were then able to make use of the patio. Day three breakfast was the worst. Stood in the DR holding up the wall waiting for a staff person to refill plates, silverware, pastries, coffee cups and fruit! Twenty minutes and not one person is around. Again my husband rings the bell in the hall and a girl from the office appears with ear buds in and my husband is salty by now and again she nonchalantly says “ok, I’ll get someone!” Fifteen minutes later someone comes out and again stone cold “I’m really busy!” He gets us one or two things and I’m still standing there waiting for fruit and I finally knock on the kitchen door and he says “sorry, we are out!” The staff just seems to not care at all about their guests. Another weird thing is if they are always behind closed doors and don’t seem to be aware of what’s going on at all and no attention to detail. For example, a pizza box was left on a pedestal in the corner of the living room and was there from one day to the next evening. Our breakfast dishes from when we dined outside were there from morning till late in the afternoon. When they were cleared they only took some and left two crumpled up napkins and a coffee mug. There’s no where in the common area to put dirty dishes so you just have to randomly find a spot to place a used coffee mug, etc. The room comes with a French press coffee and a few tea bags but no spoon or stirring utensil so what use is it? Furthermore after finding the ants I was not inclined to use it. My husband did make tea in the room on the last day because the thought of going to the main dining room for aggravation and awful food...
Read moreI just returned home from a 10-day, solo Fall getaway. I stayed at a few spots along the Hudson Valley, The Finger Lakes region and New England. I spent 4 nights at the Stanton House Inn, and it was my favorite spot of all! The inn is beautifully appointed. There is a conservatively decorated yet gorgeous sophistication to all of it. I FELT like I was in a New England B+B. It FELT like the real thing, if that makes sense.
The gardens in the back were stunning. I wished I spent more time back there, as it truly felt like an oasis. I can see it being a very lovely spot for a small party or even a wedding. And looking at the inn from outside is just as nice as experiencing it from the inside. It has all those charming old, historic features you won’t find in newer structures.
I had an excellent massage my first night. My room was very spacious and the bed/pillows very comfortable. I had a small fridge in my room which came in very handy, although I didn’t realize (my own oversight) there was also a microwave I could have used in the first floor common area, just off the living room. Good thing for future patrons to know in advance!
There were several hosts over the course of my stay, all of whom were very kind and pleasant. Gill was very sweet and accommodating every step of the way. And, I had an especially wonderful Friday evening conversation with a gentleman whose name sounds like "Veesh", although I am not sure of the spelling. He was filled with stories, knowledge insights and was an absolute delight to talk with. I also had some nice conversations with other guests while lounging in the bar area.
Breakfast was very good, although I wish there was a little more variety in selection. I had avocado toast and frittatas which were very appetizing. And I loved the espresso machine! There was also ambient and pleasant music playing in the dining room along with a scented candle (which was very subtle and not overpowering) that added to an already very nice way to start the day. It's these little things that sometimes are the big things!
Another great feature, if you will, is that the inn is situated perfectly near any services you may be interested in. I was able to walk to Whole Foods very easily (got there in about 7 minutes!) And, Greenwich Avenue is just a block or two from there. I even walked to the Bruce Museum which was an easier walk than it first appeared on Google Maps! And of course, Greenwich Point Park/Tod’s Point. If you are visiting Greenwich for any reason, you MUST go to Tod’s Point. It was magical. It was just about a 15-20 minute drive from the inn around 11:30 on a Saturday morning.
All in all, a great stay. If you are looking for a classically charming New England B+B, this is definitely a spot you should consider! I would certainly come back if the...
Read moreTake a moment to imagine......two adults in or close to their 40s, recovering from a quarantine and global pandemic navigating two full-time jobs and two small children under 7. What could these two adults possibly need the most at this very moment? We realized the answer as we experienced - the Stanton House Inn. There are a number of aspects to this place that make it the PERFECT weekend or week-long (or month-long is my fantasy) getaway for one person or a couple, or a couple of friends. The rooms are incredibly beautiful and unique, with every detail attended to in an artistic design that speaks both tradition and creativity. The in-ground pool was a mid-70s temperature even as it was unheated, and even in early June, a delight, and pristine. Because it is a Bed and Breakfast, you get a top of the line breakfast, but then everyone seems to leave after that, so it feels like you truly get peace and quiet most of the day. There is a record player with Lana del Ray, The Beatles, Tom Petty (what more could you want from a record player). I highly suggest the garden tour with the property's gardener, Colin (who is also son, innkeeper, historical muse, this is family-run!) who has traveled the world and has such a novel approach to thinking about cultivating beautiful and necessary things in harmony with each other - it was truly enlightening and energizing for an amateur suburban gardener like myself. The center town is lovely and walkable - lots of outdoor cafes and shopping if you're into that sort of thing, so it feels like a contemporary, chic town but very far away from the hustle and bustle and sounds of NYC - even as it is only 30 minutes away. I lived in NYC for 5 years and wish I knew this place existed. We planned it so we went into the city to celebrate a friend's birthday but to return for our last night there, a blissful home (it felt by that point to us) to recover and unwind. It also makes sense that this used to be a boarding house for progressive travelers (as I learned on the tour) - the casual vibe hasn't disappeared even as the inn has been entirely revamped to be its own gem. I plan to return just as soon as possible. Oh, did I mention the Inn does not allow children...
