Recently diagnosed with Celiac disease and baked goods are my Achilles heal -- so I was ready to try By the Way Bakery! On a day sick at home, I ordered a few things through GrubHub to get a feeling for the place, and you truly don't remember or care that what you're eating is gluten free. Taste and texture are completely on point -- not too sweet, not gritty, not crumbly.
Tried some of the following: creme puff (though I think the custard had been absorbed by the time it got to me, unless that's the style of it, but so soft and wonderful), little almond spiral, almond cookie (it's almost like a pignoli cookie without the pignoli nuts - nothing not to like), and chocolate brownie (everything you want in a fudgey bakery brownie!).
Why only 4 stars then? The biscotti. Something I've really been missing since going GF. Was hoping with the great general reviews and the cost that they would also be just as good as a great bakery gluten biscotti... Texture wasn't gritty, but it had nothing else going for it. Almost offensively plain and dense to this Italian, as if someone who doesn't know about or like biscotti was tasked with making them to check a box on the menu offerings. Super disappointed. My quest for GF biscotti continues!
BUT everything else was fantastic and I will absolutely be returning to try a cake for a special occasion.
TL;DR - wonderfully delicious baked goods and not just by gluten-free standards, but stay away from...
Read moreThis is the best gluten free bakery !! I first found this company in the city, and I used to make a special trip every so often to the city to get fresh quality gluten free treats!
I was so delighted to discover their Greenwich location was just as wonderful.
I love coming into their store and finding new fresh items bakes daily. They have their staples such as their chocolate chip cookies which are the best ones I have ever had ! Along with their brownies. I still can’t believe this is all gluten free.
I used to have to resort to the frozen section at Whole Foods for gluten free deserts , but not anymore.
They also have a great menu to order custom cakes for holidays, events and any other custom bakery needs you might have.
But don’t expect to sit and have a cup of coffee and enjoy your gluten free dessert , there is no room for that. It’s just a grab and go place.
They do offer a very simple selection of regular coffee. And surprisingly they have a cute little section of cards, candles and matches. A little random but it gives the place...
Read morePS-- went back for brownie cookies-- they are worth it, and the black and white cake is REALLY good-- too bad I didn't get that cake instead for the birthday. Original--Got three types of cookies and a vanilla cake. The cookies were exceedingly sweet-- which for me is a bummer-- just little to no fat satisfaction. Cake was the same. Looked very pretty, but all the sprinkles on sides with very little frosting there was too much. Texture was a bit dry and it had little vanilla taste. All told too much sweet and not enough fat. This may work for you but alas not for me and my family-- better to have done without-- remainder of...
