We stayed here on April 28th, 2022. The owners are nice, but we had a couple issues during our stay that seemed worth sharing for future guests. We were in our room for maybe an hour or two before heading back out to see the lava. During that time we used the microwave to heat our dinner, ate, and to our surprise found 6 cockroaches. Two larger ones were in between the panes of glass on the microwave, and when we went to use the roach spray that was already in the room (which is not really a good sign to begin with) on those and opened the microwave, two babies ran out out which we were able to kill one of. We called the desk to ask them to remove the microwave (since we couldn’t get the other two out, and there were likely more inside we couldn’t see) and they did, apologizing and saying it’s brought in by other guests, which seemed unnecessary to blame others. They clearly have a recurring problem if they have the spray - and they later voiced it’s a recurring problem - and I’ve never had a problem with roaches in a hotel before so I assume it’s just because it’s in a rainforest which they said was not the case. Either way, I don’t think they should be blaming their guests. Before we left for the evening, we noticed and killed two more baby roaches. Keep in mind, we weren’t looking for these, they just kept showing up. We removed our bags and other items from the room and stored them in the car for fear that they would crawl in our stuff and be brought back with us, which was inconvenient but worth it given the large number we came across in such a short amount of time. They provided some fruits and other items for breakfast that we didn’t feel comfortable eating given the roaches roaming around which was a shame because we were initially excited that we could save money on breakfast. We had also brought some other breakfast items to go with the fruit that would need to be heated up in a microwave, but we no longer had ours and didn’t feel comfortable asking and using another one anymore. (We were pretty grossed out we already ate the dinner we had heated up in it right before discovering them.) There were also smaller things of note that weren’t a big deal, but still worth mentioning. They don’t provide hand soap but instead told us to use the body wash the provided from the shower. They also didn’t have any towels set up for us (discovered after I was already wet) and when we called they apologized and said they have spare towels under the bed we could grab which worked. No biggie for these things, but it all piles together to a mediocre experience. Some other bugs were in the room that I considered normal (spiders, flies, etc) and am not factoring into the rating. There were a couple other oddities that happened during checkin that aren’t worth describing given the level of detail needed. All in all, I was disappointed they didn’t offer us a discount or anything for the trouble we went through (and just grossness) given the roaches. We paid $125 plus tax / fees for the night. Room #3. We wouldn’t return here.

There is no A/C. One could leave windows open at night but not sure how safe that is. With kids in tow, did not do so, therefore, it did get hot at night. Basic, rustic accomodation. 7 min drive to Volvano National Park. Location was perfect for our visit to the park. 3 min drive to gas station. 3 min drive to general store where snack items can be purchased. Very few choices for a meal nearby. Usual insects inside room, considering it is in the middle of trees. It is not a hotel or a lodge with reception desk. It is a self check-in, airBnB type rental. Self check-in details are emailed on day of arrival. Room was ok. Bath towels provided. Small fridge with yogurt and drinks provided. Fruit was left on small table for room guests. TV and microwave provided.

Room #6 is for the birds. Literally. Various birds were very vocal for much of the night. Also, there is a step down from where the bed is to where the kitchenette is. We ended up using suitcases to remind us not to risk falling. And water was being delivered when we returned from town with our dinner. The location is convenient to the Volcanoes National Park. The bed is comfortable. If you like unusual decor, then Room #6 may be your cup of grog. Otherwise, book a different room.

This lodge is very close to Volcano National park (3 miles). I stayed only 1 night. It seemed like a Home-stay rather than a lodge. Location inside a rain forest, it gives a feeling you are in a jungle. Well maintained. Owner's sister Shay was there when I checked in. Owner's house is at the backside of the lodge. Since owner lives on the property, if there are any issues inside room they will take of it immediately. Shay took care of me very well - Checked me in sooner than regular time, answered all my questions. She also offered me an umbrella as it seemed like it would rain. Unfortunately the heavy downpour and gusty winds broke the umbrella. I told the mis-hap and she just shrugged it off, sweet :) The room offered was excellent and very neat. It had a small kitchen with all essential stuff (Microwave, fridge, coffee maker - Coffee/Tea sachets, Half n Half, sugar, chocolate bars and not to mentioned it also had 2 chicken noodles packets that came handy that night as stores are very far off from this place. It just made me feel as though I was in a house. Loved their hospitality and price was very reasonable for things that came along in room. If I ever visit Big Island, Hawaii I will definitely make my...
